We opted to get one of the blasters to shoot targets for things to move and hear. If it would have been a little less crowded when we got in it would have been better. Other visitors that we caught up to were pretty involved in themselves and made people wait for them to finish taking their pictures every 5 steps. The museum staff does try to regulate the amount of people but unfortunately they can't really go in and tell people to move it along. I think it maybe a little overpriced but it was fun and I like to support small businesses. Had I had more time to plan, I may have parked somewhere else as I felt that was a bit steep. I'm assuming metered parking would be hard to find in that location as it is in the heart of Hollywood. I thought it would be similar to the Museum of Illusions in New York, but rather than a museum feel, this was purely just photo ops. You can rent tripods at the front for $10. They also provide free lockers for your bags and stuff- which I would highly recommend. I didn't take up the offer in the beginning but soon realized that was a better option. I would also like to highly recommend and thank Tim! He showed us the ropes of how to take photos and he took some photos for us. He was friendly, professional and patient with my two young kids. He definitely knows his way around an iPhone camera and showed me some tricks I didn't even know. Tim's photos came out a lot better than mine as you need to find the perfect angle for the pictures to have that illusion effect. The tickets I purchased online also allowed us to go to the giant house next door and the upside down house. Tim came to the rescue again and took some amazing photos for us in the upside down house. My favorite things were the oldest ones. I seem to remember neon signs from the 1930s on. Perhaps the highlight of the collection (at least it was for me) was the Grauman's Chinese Theatre Dragon. I just wish they hadn't put other objects in front of it. But the museum does not have a large footprint, so they have make do. What's there is great, I just wish there were more rooms and more exhibits. But it's only $10, which is cheap for a museum these days.

I actually took public transportation here and the bus drops you off in front of the museum! The amazing statues of horses and their riders, the architecture of the building and there's even a theater for screenings or talks on the stage! I saw that there's an American Indian Artist's Marketplace which I want to check out. I will definitely come back here to explore the exhibits!

Rather, it's like Target is to Targét when we are trying to be fancy. So that's Rubel as in "Roo-bell." Unlike modern-day construction, Rubel Castle wasn't built overnight. It was made of collected recyclables and construction rubble that spanned many decades and took several friends and volunteers to build it. For Michael, however, the lifetime inspiration was first sparked at the age of 9. His love for canons was where it started and the rest is history you can hear about on the tour. But don't just show up like we did randomly one day. There were old vending machines, tools, trinkets, and machinery that time had long forgotten. Did I mention there was a drawbridge? Yes, and a dungeon too. I was just waiting for a dragon to come swoop down on us next. Walk in the footsteps of famous visitors like Alfred Hitchcock, Dwight Eisenhower, Jack Benny, and Bob Hope. It's a feast for the eyes no matter where you glance. I particularly enjoyed the bottle house that Michael built in 1968 as his "home" as a kid. That independent spirit was quite charming to see. ~ WATERCOLOR NATURESCAPE ~ We were fortunate to have our gracious host lead us on a tour and organize a special art crafting experience outdoors. It was absolutely lovely beneath the trees and between rusted vintage cars from the turn of the century. We each got a small canvas to paint our flowers in watercolor. (This particular experience takes place in the Spring and Fall, weather permitting.) We heard the squirrels rattling in the leaves and birds chirped and sang in the trees above. We discovered that peacocks apparently originated from this property, compliments of Michael Rubel. And did I mention that on the far side of the property, a custom garden was in full bloom? Took my time taking photos in a few places. Ran into another photographer that was shooting. Friendly staff around the grounds and in the gift shop. Donations accepted to help with the park operations. There is an enclosed area that has some other vehicles and a couple of vending machines. We did not ride the train around but may next time. We had someone walk us around and share information about the different trains, which I appreciated. However, some of the historical information he provided wasn't entirely accurate, which was a little disappointing, especially when visiting a museum for educational purposes. The highlight of our visit was definitely the free train ride! My kids enjoyed that part, and I thought it was pretty cool myself. As far as the overall experience, my kids seemed a little bored. Personally, I think this museum is better suited for younger children, particularly those under the age of 10, or kids who are really interested in trains. Older children may not find enough activities to keep them entertained. I do appreciate that this museum offers families an opportunity to see historic trains up close without spending a lot of money. My biggest takeaway for families: Just because an attraction is educational and family-friendly doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be entertaining for every age group. As a parent, I love finding places where my children can have fun while learning something new, but I also want them to feel engaged and excited about the experience. Unfortunately, this visit didn't quite deliver that for my kids. If you're planning a family outing, I would recommend this museum for families with toddlers, preschoolers, or younger elementary-aged children who love trains.
