Every seat feels incredibly close to the stage--so close it seems like you could reach out and touch the actors. The theater is set "in the round," creating an intimate experience where you're fully immersed in the performance. I've sat in many different sections throughout the theater, and the acoustics are consistently outstanding. No matter where you sit, you can hear every word clearly and feel completely connected to the story. The O'Reilly Theater is truly a special place and a must-visit for anyone who loves live theater.

They also host special events and educational opportunities (like the annual Shakespeare competition). It is easy to access the theater, and there are a variety of seating options (including two sections of seats at the sides of the stage). They have accessibility aids like assistive listening devices. Restrooms are clean and spacious. The only down side is that the theater seats are on the smaller side. If you have a larger body, it may be a tight squeeze into the seats. This kind of thing is really disappointing in a new(ish) theater. But overall, high quality productions and a great place to see a show.

There is a variety of programming offered from cabaret style solo performances to smaller scale musicals. There are seating options in booths, tables and a raised platform in the back. you can really see/hear well from anywhere in the venue, but the side booths you might lose some perspective. i don't particularly like the new QR code ordering because it can make it hard to actually ask questions about anything (and the servers are so busy it is hard to catch them to ask).. there are a variety of food and drink choices (apps and entrees) and they are on the more pricey side, but that is to be expected at this type of venue. Overall, a great place to catch a show!

This review is focused on the service aspects, which are less than optimal. We attended on a Thursday night when we saw an excellent 1-man play of Die Hard. The entertainment was highly enjoyable, but the food and table service were frustrating. We came an hour early with a plan to enjoy dinner before the show. They don't have anyone who will wait on you - they force you to use their QR code at the table to order. Most of their dinner options were marked as "out of stock", so we were corralled into ordering a burger or a pasta dish. Those items were very good, but we didn't like the railroading aspect. Post-delivery service was limited, to even get extra mayo - the food deliverer dumped and ran in a flash. Trying to talk to the nice elderly ushers was fruitless with no satisfaction involved. When we had questions about the food, ours even amicably acknowledged that we ''couldn't talk to'' the waitresses. Worst of all - the invoicing included an un-changeable 20% tip! So if you ordered a 2nd drink, 20% was also added on top of that. (To have some sense of control, I went to the outside bar to get our 2nd drinks - and did tip, but not 20%). The frustration factor of how the food service is run and charged for inserted unnecessary challenges into the otherwise pleasant mood for the evening.

The musical performance in and of itself was phenomenal and could have stood by itself as it's own performance. I especially enjoyed the voice of Aja Wiltshire who sang in traditional Cambodian style music. We were amazed how she could throw her voice across the entire audience as a soprano. The pitch of her voice paired with the power behind it and the unique sound of the entire band and flashing lights is quite the spectacle. Greg Watanabe, who played a protective father with a tough past, gave an unquestionably powerful acting performance as he was showing the horrors of a very dark past that comes to light only until later in the play as the plot mysteriously unravels. The emotions and energy he puts into the many difficult encounters he faces throughout the play with his tears and sweat pouring down his body reminds one of the humanity of Cambodias difficult history. Overall, they did an excellent job of tackling heavy subject material with humor and the personal stories of the characters. I would highly suggest this to anyone with a taste for ethnic music and historical theater.

I used to regularly attend City Theatre performance but reduced my support over the past few years…read more I won't be going back to any performances at City Theatre until there is a major change in leadership. I saw Hedwig at Greer Cabaret Theatre on Sunday. They changed the script to include Pittsburgh references but decided to leave in the line "and the colored girls sing..." in reference to Lou Reed's song Walk on the Wild Side. There were millions of other lines they could have chosen to reference Rock N Roll culture. Why choose this line? Why have white actors say that line? Regardless of who Lou Reed was referencing in the song, describing people as "colored" has a very specific meaning in the context of the United States history. Furthermore, he has omitted the word "colored" from the song and has other questionable songs in regards to race. City Theatre is comprised of a predominantly white board, white staff, and this show was primarily white actors with a largely white audience. I reached out on Sunday and asked for them to refund my tickets. I have not heard back from them.
