Finally, I've been introduced to the New Hazlett Theater! I recently attended two of their shows…read morewithin two weeks. Well, more accurately, I attended one show and one run-through of an in-progress script. But together they were a great introduction to the kind of programming performed at the New Hazlett. I thought their production of "12 Angry Men" was a well-acted example of how a great creative team can breathe new life into a classic and well-known story; while the run-through was an excellent example of how the New Hazlett supports artists and new shows in the making. The space itself isn't fancy (which isn't a bad thing!) and both times I purchased tickets, seating was "first come first serve." There were stadium-style seats set up in three sections, so there was plenty of space for attendees and it was fairly easy to find a good spot. "12 Angry Men" in particular highlighted to me how there are seemingly no bad seats at the New Hazlett! I'll also note that my experiences are fairly minimal, since the New Hazlett Theater showcases a range of performance styles and hosts various events throughout the year. It's a bustling space that we're lucky to have, and which I hope people continue to support in 2025 and beyond. I'll certainly be keeping a closer eye on their productions moving forward!

I get really excited to be invited to a play or other event here because it's such an appealing venue to soak in the culture and art of dance, acting, music and more.

This review is focused on the service aspects, which are less than optimal. We attended on a Thursday night when we saw an excellent 1-man play of Die Hard. The entertainment was highly enjoyable, but the food and table service were frustrating. We came an hour early with a plan to enjoy dinner before the show. They don't have anyone who will wait on you - they force you to use their QR code at the table to order. Most of their dinner options were marked as "out of stock", so we were corralled into ordering a burger or a pasta dish. Those items were very good, but we didn't like the railroading aspect. Post-delivery service was limited, to even get extra mayo - the food deliverer dumped and ran in a flash. Trying to talk to the nice elderly ushers was fruitless with no satisfaction involved. When we had questions about the food, ours even amicably acknowledged that we ''couldn't talk to'' the waitresses. Worst of all - the invoicing included an un-changeable 20% tip! So if you ordered a 2nd drink, 20% was also added on top of that. (To have some sense of control, I went to the outside bar to get our 2nd drinks - and did tip, but not 20%). The frustration factor of how the food service is run and charged for inserted unnecessary challenges into the otherwise pleasant mood for the evening.

The Ambiance was just perfect with seating immediately in front of the stage, (literally at arms length), and the tables behind there where the cast comes through!! It was somewhat interactive. We saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show!!! It was more than I expected to say the least!!!! Simply AMAZING The entrance was easy to come in, the bar was beautiful and the Theater is easy to navigate. Clean venue and clean bathrooms with table service and food menu.

The door is next to Creative Reuse's on N Lexington Avenue. On the second Saturday of every month, the Pillow Project invites people to come and enjoy a lounge atmosphere of dance, live jazz music, and performances involving mixed-media. Alongside that, the space is used for many other events as well, each group giving it its own special charm. I've seen classes, clothing drives, photoshoots, and many other types of events use the loft. The space itself is gorgeous, with the modern coolness you'd expect from a loft belonging to a performance art troupe, combined with the history of Pittsburgh - since it is attached to Construction Junction, you can be sure that just about everything up here has been repurposed. The large windows let tons of natural light in, and the hardwood floors are gorgeous. Scattered over the space there are a few extremely unique pieces of art including a busted up mattress hanging on the wall and a laptop with a tree growing out of it. There is a large bar off to one side infront of two small openings that look down over Construction Junction. Old couches and tables are scattered throughout the space for seating and a small raised platform, infront of the multimedia control center, is also sometimes used for seating. The only problem with the space is that it is somewhat of a weather permitting space - You really feel it in here when it's hot or cold outside. There are huge heaters on the ceiling for the winter but they're very uneven, so beneath them it's burning, and not too far away it's cold again. But that's what you get when you're in such an old building, it's a really minor complaint. There is also a small waiting area downstairs right inside the door. So if you're looking to catch a cool performance, come on the second Saturday of any month and check it out. If you're looking for a neat event space, be sure to ask the Pillow Project for details. And now I can finally check in to the right place
