We started by grabbing my wife an Apple Crisp Oatmilk Latte at Fig Tree Coffee. The owners were super friendly. After exploring the food vendors, we settled on Cousins Maine Lobster. Our little one loved the tots and dancing in Daddy's arms to that Bruno Mars cover band Uptown Funk. Next we visited the car show, where we were greeted by a bunch of amazingly well-kept classics. My favorite is still the Wild Bill Tattoo van that spewed flames from the exhaust. Lastly, we went back down the street and got to know some of the vendors. The gals at Delivery Day Bag gave our son 3 pairs of baby socks for free. Coming out to Downtown Roseville was a breath of fresh air from what we normally do. I especially love to support local businesses and events like this are a great opportunity to do just that. We'll be back for more!

Vernon Street is blocked off for cars, food trucks and vendors, wide array of your typical street vendors, kiddie section and live bands that put on a free performance. If you don't like eating from food vendors, you can always get a decent meal at one of many restaurants that are on Vernon Street. From the Monk's Cellar, The Place, Nela's Mexican, and Vernon Street Grill. It's a great place to hang out with friends and family. We usually come to hang out with the car club but enjoy all that this event has to offer.

I was thinking this to myself because her photos are pieces of art. The walled photos were beautiful. Mesmerizing photos of places and people in gorgeous foreign lands. Some of the people were from indengious cultures but she captured their joy and pride. Anyway Lisa Kristine I found out is an award winning Humanitarian photographer, activist, and speaker. Her photos and photo books are shown and sold in the gallery and online. The photo books are a more affordable option vs the art photos. Another favorite photo is a black and white of aged weathered hands grasping the flow of running water from a hydraulic manual pump. Gorgeous storytelling in a moment of time photo. I got there around 10:30am and there were lots of booths ready and some still setting up. The main thing I got out of it was that the awareness of Hepatitis B. You could have gotten tested at the festival, but I didn't want to. I filled out a survey and had to go to 3 different booths to collect some prizes. That was easy because they were close to each other. Hepatitis B is an infection that attacks the liver. Is found in the blood & body fluids of infected people. If you get Hep B there are drugs to treat it: Interferons & Antivirals. There was a cool exhibit like a tube showing a Normal Healthy Colon and one w/ lots of polyps & cancerous tumors. It's very treatable if caught early, you can get a colonoscopy at age 50!! Saw the short parade w/ many Asian Heritage representing. Got many FREE things: State Farm hacky sack - spinning the wheel. Wanted a blanket, didn't get it. Instant hand sanitizer 1fl oz Kaiser squeeze apple w/ yellow rubber bracelet Calif. Pacific Medical Center cheap emergency pack some clicky pens Cheap reusable bags - one ripped already. Lunch was at booth for Ler Ros Thai. 1 item $5, or 2 for $7. I got the 2 for $7. Green papaya salad w/ shrimp, red curry veggie & white rice. Very filling lunch. Missed out on Seoul on Wheels - saw it too late. Been waiting to try it - maybe next yr. Then I left before it got too crowded. Recommended for next yr.

This is the second time I've been to the AHSC, and I can say without a doubt I've enjoyed it more than the Cherry Blossom Festival as it's more expansive. The festival takes up about of 6-7 blocks starting at the library on Grove and stretching up to Ellis Street. DAY/TIME: It's a one-day event, the 3rd Saturday of May every year from 11 AM - 6 PM. FOOD BOOTHS (about 20 or so of Thai, Filipino, Laotian, Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese food): My friends and I all ordered a bunch of things to share and sample... *Good Corn Roast ($4): YUM! Straight from the grill, the corn was tender and sweet. There were shakers for parmesan cheese, cayenne pepper, garlic salt, black pepper, cajun seasoning, etc. BEWARE of the cayenne pepper b/c it was FLAMING HOT. And b/c it was windy, it ended up flying into my eye when I was eating it. *ouch* *Mai Thai: Spicy Basil Chicken and Pad Thai ($7). It was ok. The chicken was a little dry and lacked any heat that Thai food is known for. The Pad Thai was good; the noodles were al-dente and was tangy and sweet. *Irma's Pampanga: -Lumpia Shanghai ($.50/each): Yummy! It was warm and crispy and the filling was tender and flavorful. -Pork Sig Sig w/ Pancit ($7): Meh! It tasted like boiled overcooked pieces of pork which was dry. However, the pancit was good and cooked al-dente. -Okoy ($4 - Filipino fritter): This version was made of bean sprouts, corn, scallion, and topped with a tiger shrimp. It was room temperature, so by that time it lost a lot of it's crispness since the sprouts have a high water content. -Pork BBQ ($4/stick): YUMMY! Thick, juicy, fatty pieces of pork BBQd on a skewer and then slathered with a thick, savory and sweet sauce. *Seoul on Wheels: -Spicy Pork w/ Jap Chae ($3.95 for an app size): YUMMY! The pork was tender, fatty, and flavorful w/ just the right amount of kick to it. The Jap chae was al-dente with a savory sweet taste to it. -Korean Beef and Chicken Kimchee Tacos ($3 each): YUMMY! In a 6 in. diameter corn tortilla, the tacos were topped with slices of tender and flavorful beef and chicken w/ lettuce, kimchee, sour cream and siricha for a perfect balance of sweet (marinade from the meat), spicy, tangy, and creaminess. *Kara's Cupcakes ($3 each): We bought 6 cupcakes which we ate later that night after clubbing. I ate the Kara's Carrot but, sadly b/c I was happily incoherent, I can't recall how it exactly tasted other than I know it was good? So, I'll have to do a re-do. *Red Velvet Cake Stand ($4): It was good! The RVC came in a form of a large cupcake slathered with thick cream cheese frosting. The cake itself was a moist dense cake and the frosting was creamy and sweet. *Beer Booth ($4 for 12 ounces): BLUE MOON AND HONEY MOON!!! PERFORMANCES: There were 2 separate stages for performers to showcase their singing, dancing, and musical talent. The highlight was LA's Far*East Movement's performance ("Like a G6" and "Girls on the Dancefloor") which was a blast to watch esp the groupies who seemed like they would pass out if Kev Nish, J-Splif, Prohgress, or DJ Virman hugged them. Another highlight was the Muay Thai Fighting (World Team USA) Ring b/c there's nothing better than watching buff shirtless guys battle it out! Lol! OTHER BOOTHS/ENTERTAINMENT: *Arts & Crafts: There was about 30+ booths of clothes, jewelry, accessories, artwork, and trinkets. The highlights were the PANDA HATS booth which was $12 each or 2 for $20, unique Asian themed t-shirts some w/ funny distasteful language, and kimono dresses for dogs. *Corporate: Citbank, East West Bank, Academy of Arts, etc. *Community: Asian American Donor Program, Asian Wellness Center, City Car Share, etc *Health fair: Free blood pressure, body fat screenings, HIV rapid testing, etc. *Wild 94.9 and KMEL 106.1 playing Top 40s and Hip Hop. *Several rides and a funhouse for kids to play in. *J-Cars Gathering: SKYLINE GT-R! AFTER-PARTY: The after party was held at 181. I didn't go, but I know Far*East Movement performed again. PARKING: Nearby street parking was metered, so unless you want to risk getting a ticket, park at the nearby garage at the AMC 1000 Van Ness Bldg or near Peet's on Golden Gate and Van Ness. Can't wait to come back next year...

I lived across the street in the Army Street housing projects, back then projects were supposed to be rough. They were not. At that time I was 21 years old. As the story goes, Poor box robbers may have started a fire by spilling an altar candle that they were using to illuminate the church as they walked around looking for the cash box. iT Was around 2:50 am and I remember this fire as it was yesterday. It was an eerie glow that illuminated the entire neighborhood. Watching a church burn down was a traumatic experience for me. It just was not right. I don't know if they ever caught the punks that started this fire. but I am sure they are not living a "good life " if any are still alive - which I doubt. the facade of the church was saved and the church was remodeled. I visited a year ago. and yes, It is different, it will never be the same. But I am happy that it still stands.
