South African restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Food was good and reasonably priced. Trying a bit too hard to be quirky at times but just manages to stay on the right side of hipster nonsense. read more

New review from Nov 2019:…read more This is my second visit here and far more disappointing. The reason is the waiter/owner was grumpy and when I asked for a takeaway box for the moyin moyin he actually scowled! Wow. The moyin moyin is quite flavourful but the jollof rice is a real disappointment. I've had far better in Ghana. Two years ago: I popped into here for lunch around 1:30pm today and whilst the owner could have been friendlier in greeting me (a smile doesn't hurt ya know), I appreciated him coming outside the restaurant to hand me my takeaway food where I had waited in the lovely sun for my order. The interior is quite small with only a couple of tables with lovely African sculptures all around. There is chalkboard of specials along with the regular menu. Sadly the sweet potato balls were sold out so I got the moin moin and the spinach stew. All together less than a tenner. There are four pieces of moin moin, which are just deliciously savoury. I recommend eating them with the nonspicy spinach stew with melon seed, which, whilst not delicious, was tasty and filling. It would be perfect on a cold winter night. If I was in the area, I would return just for the moin moin!

My, my, my, what a weird little place you are, Shiraz. Sure, I went to see you on a friend date…read more Sure, we were pre-movie early birds. But why you remained awkwardly empty--aside from the owner eating at one of the tables in the back--for the whole hour and change we were there still perplexes me. Especially since the owner/server was oddly charming, the Persian (does Persia still exist in the world of Culinaria?) tea was sweet but pleasing, the Vegetable Bourek was tasty, and the Moussaka was pretty excellent. So why did the dining experience leave me feeling like I just took down cheese-covered lentils in the Orientalist Twilight Zone? Oh, Shiraz--you might not have the aura of a "winner," but I like you anyway. So, Dear Reader, help a poor restaurant out--the next time you and your group want to go out for a lively meal, book Shiraz. The food is reasonably priced, they have cheap house wine, and a browse on localsecrets.com should turn up an offer or two. I think the students like to come here because of the £10 deal. I think it includes a poppadom, rice, naan, and a main. And maybe a drink. It's a deal. Unfortunately the food is pretty terrible. I've eaten here twice and both times the curry was pretty mediocre. I think they feel they can get away with a lot because we're dining with the students. They don't know they're dealing with a Yelper! I just wish they'd put more effort into the flavor. It's pretty bland curry. They can do it hotter, but it still doesn't really improve the flavor, just makes your mouth burn. The chutneys with the poppadoms seem like they're out of a jar. The rice portion is stupidly small. The keema naan had barely any lamb mince in it. I'll probably come back because I have to when we're out with the brass band folks. I just wish they'd decide on a better curry house.
