The Meate Shoppe is prowling in Crofton, MD today. Same scenario many others have described. The guy knocks on my door telling me how he screwed up an order and has a great deal for me. I have been thinking about buying meat in bulk recently so I took a look. They proceeded to show me box after box of different cuts of frozen steak and chicken and telling me stories of how each cut and marinade is the best. I am not a meat aficionado, but I know enough to know that all frozen meat looks pretty much the same. There was no way to tell if this was grade a meat or dog food, and when they repeatedly told me about their guarantee, all I could think about was the guarantee Chris Farley gives in Tommy Boy. When I balked at their initial price, the other guy in the van then gets his "boss" on the phone and tells me that he wants to negotiate a deal. Things felt a little sketchy at that point and I told him I needed to grab my phone from inside the house. The first thing I did was go to yelp and thankfully all of the terrible reviews made my decision a no-brainer. I went back out to the van and told them I was not interested. If there is one review you read of the Meat Shoppe (also going by the name Champion Meats), I hope this is the review that you read. A pushy, but admittedly nice, salesman (Named Tim) showed up on my porch on January 28th asking astronomical prices for frozen meat (I live next door to a quality butcher and enjoy fine cuts of meet, and I'm willing to spend the money for GOOD meat). I explained to the salesman that we weren't interested, but he wouldn't take "no" for an answer so I ended up paying $60 for 4 ribeye steaks and 8 filet mignons, all with a money-back guarantee. I figured I had nothing to lose, if this meat was even decent at all, $60 is a good price for 12 steaks. Of course, the meat was terrible. It tasted like bad hamburger meat. You should absolutely be wary when they tell you not to thaw the meat, but to cook it from a frozen state. Upon thawing the meat, you'll quickly see how poor of quality this meat is. No worries, I reach out to the Meat Shop the next day to request a refund. Here is where it gets crazy: To request a refund, you have to submit a written request through certified mail. I did such on 1/30 and didn't hear anything for a week. I called in and they explained that they would schedule someone to come pick it up (all of the sales people are 1099 contractors, so that specific salesman needed to stop by and pick it up since it was coming out of HIS pocket essentially). I scheduled 4 (yes, FOUR) separate appointments for the salesman to pick it up, and Tim never did. Finally fed up, I called back and received the address for the Meat Shoppe and spoke to the customer service person (Megan) and then was transferred to the GM (Jerome). Jerome explained that he would meet me last night (02/27) at the Meat Shop location for me to drop off the meat and I could pick up a refund check directly from him. Of course, after this, Jerome and Megan both began to screen my calls and nobody ever showed up to meet me last night for my refund. I sat outside of the offices for 30 minutes waiting for Jerome to show up and he never did. I called 5x and left a voicemail. No returned call, nothing. I ended up leaving the uneaten portions of meat at their front door because at this point, I'm over it. It's not about the $60 anymore. I knew that money was long gone. Here is the bottom line: do not give this company your business. Not only is their meat terrible, but their "guarantee" is a complete joke and the employees will treat you like a piece of garbage. Their lack of customer service is rivaled only by their complete dishonesty and disgusting company culture based on ignoring customers. I can't even explain how this all makes me feel. I should have done my due diligence and read all of the 1 star reviews before I forked over $60, but I didn't. Please take my warning. Waiting for a full refund on a purchase made at 430pm on Thursday feb 16,2017 Called customer service after 5pm to complain because upon putting meat in the freezer everything was either freezer burned or had been defrosted and frozen again some Meat was discolored as well. On 2/17/16 I called again at 3pm because I didn't get a called back. Spoke with a girl in customer service very nice and professional. She explained to me that I need to send a certified letter with on 3 business days of purchase. They have certified letter. Now I'm waiting for them to respond. We decided to give it a try and made two different pieces of chicken. The quality was horrible, it smelled when I opened the bag and shrunk to half the size. Go into high pressure sales mode. I fell for it and ended up with a full case of steaks and a case of chicken. My experience with the steaks is exactly the same as everyone else. Once defrosted, these things look extremely sickly. I just defrosted two of the fillets. They smell bad, and look a sickly gray. I am not sure I am going to cook them. He explained that he was a retired vet trying to make a living driving what looked to be like an unrefridgerated van. It was hot outside that day, however the meat was frozen. Though, how many other pourches did he spend hours hustling innocents in the hot sun while the meat thawed on previous occasions ((and he later refroze))? The guy that just came by my house tried to use every sleazy sales trick in the book... he "apologized" because he "doesn't usually knock on doors," then he made a reference to veterans, thanked my husband for serving in the military, had a story about how a neighbor veteran only took half of an order they needed to fill, played on my sympathy to try and sell the "other half" of the order that my "neighbor veteran" was not able to purchase today because he "couldn't return to his boss with half of the order." The salesman explained that he had extra meat left behind from sales today and they like to go door to door to sell leftovers. I came home to find a white van at my home. One guy was walking around back of my house the other was in the van and rolled up the window as I approached. I could smell marijuana and asked them what they were doing. I unholstered my side arm and asked if they had seen my no tresspassing signs. The guy wondering outside my home ran into the van and asked if I was a cop. I asked the driver to see his solicitation permit since our township has a strict no solicitation ordinance and has the signs posted on all main roads. Our sales rep, Kenny, came to my door on November 17th, 2 days after we moved into our brand new house. I was unpacking and had boxes everywhere, and the last thing I wanted to deal with was a sales rep knocking on my door, selling meat. He said he was trying to get into the neighborhood and all he wanted was for us to give a referral to new neighbors moving in, blah blah blah. Anyway, we decided to buy a case of steak, because he said he'd throw in a case of chicken for "free". I paid $369 for a case of steak (which was 6 boxes) and assumed that the chicken would be free, as he told me. He didn't have the chicken with him and said he'd drop it off the next Tuesday. Never got it. He dropped a pamphlet off at the house the following Saturday, a week later and when I called him, he asked me to call him Monday evening and he'd bring it by Tuesday. Never came. I finally got the chicken on Dec 8th. Fast forward to another neighbor moving in and we get to talking. She told me that she only paid $180 for her case of steak. Please explain to me why i paid double when my chicken was supposed to be "free"?? I called Kenny, our sales rep, and we got into a screaming match about how I accused him of pulling one over on me, he wouldn't ever sell to me again, and I couldn't pay him $10k to sell anything else to me. Well, that's fine because I'd never in a million years purchase anything from that shady guy. If you're going to charge someone in the neighborhood one price, keep it consistent. Meat was tough, watery, just plain bad. As a testament, my dogs LOVE meat. One pulled a steak from the table but did not eat it! The other smelled it and walked away!
