Sometimes I feel bad about writing reviews of places because I really, really want to enjoy them, but they let me down. That was my experience at The Meat Counter.
It's a cute little restaurant with a small number of seats, but that's not a deterrent. The burgers on the board looked absolutely amazing, so we decided to get one cheeseburger with blue cheese and bacon and one of the bbq pork burgers (topped with bbq pork). We also split their animal-style cheesy chips. I also had a root beer (yes, they have root beer in the UK!)
So the burgers. We split them in half, and they were two different buns. The bun on the pork burger was the right size, but a bit stale and crumbly. I would have preferred the burger to be cooked a bit more pink in the middle. And unfortunately, there wasn't a lot of flavor all around (the meat definitely needed more seasoning.) The cheese burger had a massive bun. It was way too big for the size of the patty, so we ended up eating only part of it. And with a blue cheese burger, I expect a nice rich experience, but it was still kind of bland and under-seasoned.
And the animal-style cheesy chips. Coming from the US, I expected an In-N-Out animal style thing, and they were just some chips with a bland cheese sauce and a few chopped pickles. Not quite the animal style I was hoping for.
So a good effort, but for me, it was lacking. Which is unfortunate. It's a super cool venue, and the music was great, and the workers were super friendly (and attractive!), but the food just really didn't stand up for me. read more
