Possibly the best fish and chip place around (or in the local vicinity anyway!) A couple of my friends came here and highly recomended the place to me and handing me a business card with an old image from a painting on it (some king or something), I wasn't to sure but eventually popped along. When I got there form the outside I though 'this looks a bit fishy' (a bit fishy! ha! get it!? ... oh well... never mind) I got myself the staple fish and chips with a battered sausage. The chips were done to perfection and the sausage had the wonderful mix ox a crispy covered batter with juicy tasty meat on the inside. I now highly recomend this place to everyone! read more

The Magnet has got to be one of the finest Fish & Chip shops south of the river. From the outside it's green paint and enticing lighting give off a mythical aura - when the blinds of the shop are closed there is a beautiful image, which I don't want to spoil for you, you have to see it!! For a normal portion of chips you will have to pay £1:30 - but the size of the portion is mammoth!! I popped in one day on an empty stomach after missing my evening meal and ended up having to share my chips with my friend so as not to waste them. I can't even begin to imagine the size of there large chips - which at £2:00 has gotta be a bargain! The staff are extremely friendly, always with a smile of their face and the interior decor makes a visit to The Magnet one of the best starters to the shop's main courses! Superb! read more

Before you ponder any further, this chippy doesn't double up as a live music venue on the weekends but after being voted the best fish and chip shop in Bristol, or possibly in England, Badly Drawn Boy performed an acoustic gig here as the prize a few years back. Certainly the best chip shop south of the river, The Magnet is situated behind East Street close to Bedminster Skate Park and a rather dodgy looking pub. The chips are perfect and service comes with a smile. The deep fried delights on offer are deliciously greasy and the prices are fairly cheap depending on what you order. Fresh but dripping, from a tiring lane swim at the Bristol South Swimming Pool, I stumbled upon the Magnet. On approaching the place, I couldn't really work out what it was, was it a pub? was it a fishing tackle shop? I didnt' know. It turned out to be an extremely well placed fish and chip shop, and exactly what I fancied, one drizzly lunchtime. I ordered a pie and chips, and while I was waiting, noticed an article Blu Tacked to the wall; it turns out this chippy won an award for the best chip shop, and subsequently had Badly Drawn Boy play a gig there as part of his tour, to ten lucky ticket holders. Bizarre indeed, as were the strange decorations inside, doll-like things and shesha pipes. As for the pie and chips, exactly what I was after. Good stuff. read more

The Magnet is Bedminster is a brilliant little chippy behind East Street and close to the Tap and Barrel. The owners pretty much know me by now, as I'm always coming back for their delicious fish and chips. The chips are apparently cooked in beef dripping, and they do taste really good, probably not a good idea if you're watching what you eat though. There's a slightly foreign twist to the place, with odd decorations inside and a foreign music channel playing on the TV, but they sell all the standard English fish and chip related items. It's a shame you can't sit anywhere inside to eat them, as I'm sure if the owners had a dining space it would be magnificently decorated. Instead, why not walk the shopping streets of North and East Street or stroll over to the nearby park to sit and munch. read more

Great fish and chip shop, the fish always tastes fresh and the batter is always crispy and tasty, the chips are delicious. Sometimes I feel really bloated after fish and chips but the batter from the magnet is lovely and light and i always end up feeling full and content. read more

Only moved to BS3 a year ago so still getting to know the top nosh in the area. I really wanted to like The Magnet, based on reviews on Yelp (sadly from 2010) however the cod tasted not fresh, but frozen and thawed in the fryer. Fishcake was doughy and tasted of the smell of bad fish. Chips were ok. Will go back to Fishminster. read more

Located near that really dodgy pub that is the Tap and Barrel in deepest, darkest Bedminster, this place is a little ray of light, surrounded by highrise flats. Many's the time that I've gone past here on my way to or from a mate's house. The cod is particularly fine, so that's always my first choice here, with chips, of course, oh and curry sauce, plus a can of Rio - I could easily spend a week's wages here. Merrily walking my way back towards town, I sit in the church grounds around the corner and munch the fine food. Easily one the better fish and chip shops in Brizzle, I'd say that it's only outdone by Fishministers, which, oddly enough, is also in Bedminster. Weird that. read more

New Age fish and chips, anyone? The Magnet's mystical decor is pretty 'out there' for a chippy, and lends Dean Lane some much needed colour and spice. The food itself is equally flavoursome, and the cod is near sublime. The chips are certainly up there with Bedminster's finest, and the homemade fish cakes are also jaw-droppingly tasty. Award winning fish bar for a reason, cooked in dripping and as tasty as a bag of chips can come. Just awesome, the guy is really friendly, the food is excellent. Crispy and lovely chips. Excellent home made fish cakes too. It's well worth the drive to bedminster. Badly Drawn Boy even did their album launch there too! Perfect for when you're peckish but be warned, there is nowhere to sit inside but you can always take a short stroll just across the road to Dean lane park to sit and eat them! read more

On the basis of the initial review I visited Magnet's last night. I can confirm that they served the best fish and chips I've had in ages. Reasonably priced and excellent value for money as the quality was so high. Magnet's is tucked away around the back of asda in bedminister but is easy enough to find when you link into google maps. The food is cooked to order and the staff are very friendly and helpful- I first called to make sure they were open and they were happy to take my order over the phone. And yes it is true, badly drawn boy did do a gig from the shop, if you ask them they will show you the press cutting! Worth a visit if you hungry and in the neighbourhood. read more

went into this chippy when it first re-opened and everything was amazing, been in since and now the chips are under cooked and greasy, the fish wasnt cooked long enough, the batter was thick and rubbery. wont be going here again as it is overpriced for the quality recieved. read more
