Cullen Skink
Nick C.

If this is the Luckenbooths restaurant, then I stopped in here for a small quick afternoon bite and it was pretty good. I was a big fan of the Cullen Skink soup. It was rich and filling and really hit the spot after walking around most of the day. I also asked for a side of the Warm garden pea, mint & whipped feta salad, but it really felt like it was simply a bowl of lightly seasoned peas. The service was really quick and attentive and I was able to get in, get my food, and get out in 20 minutes or less.

I had the garden breakfast (vegetarian) and it was delicious. The staff was prompt and the prices reasonable. One thing I am learning as an American, be patient. Every restaurant I have eaten in is in no hurry to bring you your bill.

Yea....pretty sure this place does not need my American review but here goes.... Delicious is what I say....D-elicious!! My hubby ordered a cocktail that wasn't on the menu... a Manhattan. They told us they could make it and yes, yes they can. Yum! It was a nice evening to sit outside and watch all the hub-bub on the streets. The food was delicious and the service was just right. Not hovering and not neglecting. My chicken mushroom pie was the best I've ever had. Going to be here for a few days so we will be back for more food and cocktails. Just ate here again on Saturday and again very pleased!! Had such a wonderful experience on Wednesday. We decided not to take a chance on another place with the crowds being this huge. Just got some smalls this time as we have a big dinner plans tonight. My hubby got the Truffle and mayonnaise fries... They were the best.

Stopped in for dinner after almost every other restaurant was booked or closed during Fringe. Was I expecting this to be a tourist trap? Absolutely. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food! We tried traditional cullen skink (haddock & potato leek soup), chicken and mushroom pie, and a whipped feta and tomato salad. Even though we paid Royal Mile pricing, it was all really delicious!

Sat outside for a quick lunch. Ordered the steak focaccia and burrata salad. Sandwich was very good. The oil and garlic mayo on this was phenomenal. Came with a side Parmesan and greens salad. Good place go people watch and watch the street performers. Will definitely come back. Service was much faster than most of the places here in Scotland and the price was decent. I'd say it's more upscale casual.

The Luckenbooth is your typical Royal Mile jewellery shop. A step above the tourist traps but not quite at the classy level of places on Rose St, it is nevertheless good at showcasing the kind of jewellery makers Scotland has to offer. Selling the usual suspects - Heathergems, Ortak etc - there are some real finds in here if you're looking for contemporary Scottish necklaces and rings. Like the Tappit Hen and Scottish Experience Jewellery, the Luckenbooth has some real treats on offer. They're not cheap but they don't exactly break the bank, either. Great for tourists looking for treasure that isn't sprayed with tartan, or locals on the prowl for a gift. You might get lucky!

This is most definitely a Royal Mile Shop. Walking down one of Edinburgh's most famous streets, you will be confronted by what seems like endless "Scottish" shops all selling "kilts", postcards, tea towels and generally anything that can be covered in tartan. The Luckenbooth, at first sight, looks just like another one of these tourist gimmicks. In some ways it is. But it does offer something a little different. It is a jewellery shop selling genuine Scottish made jewellery. And some of these trinkets are indeed quite nice. Keep in mind that its Scottish focus is quite narrow. This tends to mean neo-Celtic design and maybe some Mackintosh. Don't start your career in Scottish art and design history here. So The Luckenbooth though first appearing like all the others, does offer something a bit different, more niche. Or so its seems. It never quite escapes this fate. Alongside the jewellery and silverware you will still find some tartan rubbish and touristy "Scottish hats".

The Luckenbooth, on the Royal Mile, is a refreshing change from the normal Edinburgh tourist shop fare. So many of these places are full of useless tat that would only lure in a gullible tourist. The Luckenbooth is breaking the mould by offering something a bit different. Jewellery is what this place majors on. According to Wikipedia, this is one of many shops that have would have existed on the Royal Mile since the 16th century, selling Scottish jewellery. Some of the items they offered did look pretty nice, but as Jonny says, the range of designs is quite limited. Good if you like that sort of stuff though. Together with the jewellery, there is a small range of other Scottish gifts available to purchase. Fortunately, this does not dominate. And anyway, there are tourist shops all over the place, so there's always a place just round the corner to satisfy your need for a kilt towel.

As we were marrying from out of the country, the ease with which we were able to get our florals chosen and delivered was invaluable. They are fairly priced, organized and have a real eye for color and texture. For the color schemes, we chose an "Islay" bridal bouquet and "Iona" buttonholes, combs and bridespeople bouquets. I discovered Narcissus Flowers on Instagram when choosing vendors for my wedding. I immediately…read morewas blown away by the beauty of their work- it's like no florist I've ever seen in the US. I love that they are a local small business and every time I see a post from them I immediately get "heart eyes." I wish I could visit their shop in person because it looks breathtaking, and I'd also love to take some of their beginning classes in floristry. Fiona was our florist for our wedding, and I will mostly just let the photos of her work speak for themselves. Absolutely breathtaking. I requested a colorful bouquet with a lot of texture, scottish thistle boutonnieres, lantern centerpieces, and a beautiful flower shop style setting for our ceremony. Fiona delivered and then some. I think flowers in the UK are just better and of more variety than in the US, and the eye for floral artistry is just infinitely better. I showed Fiona a photo of a tropical bouquet (my original wedding was tropical.. it's a long story) that was my dream bouquet. It had a lot of color and some beautiful trailing ribbons. Fiona ordered the most amazing hand-dyed silk ribbons from Heirloom Silk Ribbons.. they added such a wonderful boho touch to my bouquet, and made the bouquet just that much more special. I personally have an obsession with attention to detail, and Fiona's attention to detail was just so incredible. To top it off, there was a mishap with the original geometric terrariums she had planned to use for my centerpiece, and while I was completely fine with the suggested changes, she went over the top and made even larger, more extravagant centerpieces for me to make up for it. Oh my gosh.. they were just so stunning. I originally was going to go minimal on the flowers because they can be so expensive, but I found even these high end florals from Narcissus to be so affordable and absolutely worth every penny. My husband was skeptical, as a man who doesn't fully understand the draw of flowers.. but when he saw what Narcissus created for us, he knew that every detail and every penny was absolutely worth it and then some. I think in the US, flowers such as these would have been 2 or 3 times the price, and would have come along with some pretty rude service. I cannot recommend Narcissus flowers highly enough. Stunning is the best word I can use to describe Narcissus. They are truly a one-of-a-kind shop, and when I see what they are posting it instantly makes me feel good. That's what flowers should be- they of course don't last forever, but that feeling they give you when you are admiring their beauty is absolutely worth it. Flowers, especially of this high caliber, just bring pure joy and beauty.

This kind of stuff doesn't really float my kind of boat but I did see a really pretty dark wood table at £95 that I quite liked. They stock lots of little accessories such as crystals, jewellery and candles and the staff are really helpful too. Upon entering, there was certainly that free spirited vibe - they were playing the Cocteau Twins and the shop keeper was really relaxed. But that only made for a better browsing experience (and I LOVE the Cocteau Twins so I was happy). Yes, there are loads of carved wooden ornaments and chairs, hanging beads and dream catchers, but there are also some lovely rustic homewares, trendy candles and some truly gorgeous ornate wrapping paper. They have a range of cards and some lovely stuff for the kitchen, including plaid patterned coat hangers and pretty ornaments. So even though it has the 90s hippy vibe, there is more variety than you may think if you care to enter. The shop assistant was absolutely lovely and her laid back approach left me free to browse to my heart's content. I came out with cactus candles which are awesome but too nice to burn!

Even though The Fringe is only on in August, the Fringe Shop is open all year to get goodies. They stock various different t-shirts and hoodies in various designs and colours, but all with the Fringe logo. You will also find postcards and posters, so great if you want to decorate your wall and you're a Fringe fanatic. They also stock usual souvenirs such as mugs, teddies, pens and you can even buy gift vouchers. You can also pre-order the annual Fringe programme so you know what going to be on in the coming year. Just thinking about it's making me all excited - I love The Fringe! I suppose this shop serves it's purpose and it's so unusual to have a shop dedicated to a festival so for individuality and because I love The Fringe I'm giving it 4, but I still can't help but think it's a little bit pointless...

Saying that, it has its uses - it keeps visitors and locals up to speed on upcoming Fringe events, and nearer the time (i.e from June onward) you can buy tickets for various shows to guarantee your front row seat. It sells some Fringe merch, which seems a bit empty unless you are actually at the Fringe that year and want something to remember it by. But I can imagine some tourists being interested in the t shirts and teddies they have on offer. Like Eleanor, I find the Fringe Shop's year long opening a little bit pointless. But if I need to use it nearer the time of the festival, which I sometimes do, I am usually caught saying the opposite. So I'm four starring it since it's a great resource of information if you're wanting to secure your place in or at the Fringe early!
