Apparently, it is owned by a guy who was a big footy fan and you have a number of strips mounted on the walls. The drinks selection is pretty broad ranging and there are enough beers and ales on tap for most palates. There was a garden out back for smoking and summer climes, but we elected to eat indoors. Whilst you order at the bar, they provide table service for your food and any additional drinks. I chose a tasty Pinot for the fish and was pleased with the bottle. Some pubs just don't get food wine right, but they seem to be clued in on this front at the Witch. It is a little tucked out of the way, so if you haven;t been before I would suggest a route finder or bringing a sat nav. If you arrive at Haywards Heath station, it's worth an inexpensive taxi fare and well worth venturing into Lindfield for. i would definitely return for a second helping!

There's a huge maple tree in the 'adult only' sun terrace (its nice not having screaming kids interrupting your lunch) and from the front garden you get a lovely view of the South Downs. This establishment is in the AA pub guide so can get busy at weekends so if you're in a large group, it may be worth booking in advance.

The village itself dates back to Domesday and has a fine mediaeval church (worth a visit while there). In fact, the village has 55 entries in the listed building guide, so there's more than enough history to occupy the most hardened tourist before retiring to the pub for refreshment. The pub building dates back to 1774 (and possibly earlier) and is a Grade II listed building; the frontage of blue and red bricks looks suitably traditional, and through the front door there is a main bar area to the left and a wonderful snug room (with a huge fireplace) to the right. The interior is all wooden beams and stone floors, with a bar serving a good selection of real ales and generous portions of traditional pub grub, all with friendly bar staff. (NB The food is popular, so be prepared to wait at busy periods). Towards the rear of the pub, the walls are festooned with old pictures and photographs, and a motorcycling theme predominates: it is a well-known meeting place for bikers, and there's a club board by the back door giving details of events, runs, etc. Outside is a large garden, with lots of seating. The rear of the pub is decorated with old enamel advertising signs, covering every subject imaginable. Also at the back is the large, surfaced car park - perfect for rows of shiny (or, in my case, not so shiny) motorbikes. If all that wasn't enough, the pub also host a fortnightly folk and blues club (http://www.6bellsfolk.co.uk ) as well as its biker meets. Oh, and on my last visit, my mate and I (on our bikes) opted for 2 pints of soda and lime to quench our thirst, with a couple of packets of crisps. It came to £1.80. In all, it was 4 Fish & Chips, One Farmhouse Burger, and a Battered Halloumi burger, plus an order of calamari, and 4 tomato and garlic soups. There were zero plates taken off the table that were not empty! I had the Halloumi burger, which had a great, crispy batter topped with some guacamole mayo with a red sauce on the side. Really good. Then we doubled down and hit the dessert menu! Two warm chocolate brownies with salted caramel ice cream and four plum tarts. We asked for some custard on the side because who doesn't like custard?! Save for the debate about whether it was more a pie than a tart, another set of empty plates were the only evidence left. Would definitely recommend The Farmhouse!

Hophead is their best known beer and you can find that in plenty of Brighton pubs including the The Lion and Lobster. It is, as you would imagine, a hoppy beer. Light and lively, it's wonderful on a warm summer evening because it's very quaffable and refreshing. One is never enough. Totally different: Espresso. It's a dark porter or stout. Black and rich and each bottle is flavoured with espresso coffee. You get a fleeting shimmer of coffee when you drink it. It's a wonderful and original beer. You can buy it by the bottle in Waitrose. And for summer 2010, seek out Argus Ale. Again, an exciting summer beer that's been developed in conjunction with the local Argus newspaper. Available in bottle and on draught in selected boozers (including the Evening Star).
