I was so happy to find Parnassus Books in Ketchikan during a recent Alaskan cruise. This was one of our first stops after my wife & I disembarked our ship. It was still early in the day, so there weren't too many patrons in the shop. The store was quite large for a small town, so we spent a good amount of time walking through the place and browsing the shelves. While I read mostly non-fiction, I was pleased to find a section of fiction books written by local authors. I purchased one that was autographed and plan to enjoy it when I get back home. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the store was well organized and clean, with the all the shelves clearly labeled. This was the best bookstore we visited during our Alaskan trip.

So, on our cruise in June we were so excited to stop in this shop! We stopped in and explored the store and I appreciation the selection available as well as the kids section being fully stocked. We were VERY excited that my son found an autographed book from his favorite author and it's been cherished since then. The boat was comfortable and the small group setting made the whole experience feel relaxed and personal. We saw so much wildlife: whales, bald eagles, jellyfish, crabs, a mink sprinting along the shore, and a bunch of harbor seals lounging on the rocks. We also saw several types of birds that the couple was keeping track of for a wildlife database. They are super knowledgeable and clearly love what they do.

These pieces of art are absolutely exquisite and are made from materials only available to native artisans. The work is original, certified and not knock offs like you find in the vast majority of the stores throughout Alaska. The owner Mike, who is extremely friendly and informative will explain how this work is certified and what to look for when you are at other stores. The Level of detail on the sculptures and quality of the work has to be seen to be appreciated. Mike, who has been in Alaska for 50 years and in business for 30 years will give you the history of his business and how he travels to various remote parts of Alaska to obtain these works of art and foster the long term relationships with the native artisans to stock his shop. If you settle on a piece of art he will ship it for you back to the lower 48 providing a convenient way of getting it home, especially the larger pieces of work.

This is the place to get a real piece of art from your journey up the Northwest Passage. I brought back a wonderful serigraph from the artist Tale. I was also given a very nice embossed paper art. The selection was good, the staff was reasonably helpful (and busy...being on the dock this place was crowded). Some of the designs on the shirts were really nice (which is why we bought a few here). If you're on a cruise this shop is right on the dock. There are others, too. They seemed to cover the gamut from nicer stuff to crappier stuff. No complaints with Talbot's.
