We took light rail down Denver this morning. The only other experience we have had is L in Chicago. We made it downtown with only 1 change over. Trip out was a little better. It was July 4th so traffic wasn't a normal week day.

The bag lady that held up the works for 20+ minutes at Arapahoe at Village Center. Thanks for making everyone late, beeyotch!

I got the chance to check out the Light Rail for the first time yesterday, traveling from the Louisiana/Pearl station down to Arapahoe at Village Center station for a job interview. Smooth sailing for the most part. It's good having a service like this around that can literally get you distances over 50 miles for the same price as a quick jaunt across town. I found out early on that light rail tickets are usually a separate cost from mainstream RTD bus transfers, unless you've got one of their cards or discounted ticket multipacks. Especially after seeing the 12 car pileup on the death row I-25, complete with fire trucks, ambulances, and cop cars, I found it to be a fast, smooth, traffic-free ride. As some other reviewers have pointed out, although it's an awesome service, security seems to be extremely lacking. Not that I'd ever try or condone it, but one could probably get away with jumping on and off at various stations without a ticket, as I was pretty taken aback to discover that they don't really have anybody permanent checking for paid tickets - no turnstiles or setups like you'd see elsewhere. On the ride back, there was one random security officer that jumped on at a station, checked two people's tickets, jumped off at the next stop, and that was it. I've heard that they can and will fine you for fare evasion, but with their current setup, the chances of that happening would be about equal to winning the lottery. You'll always encounter a few shadies like you would at a bus station, but I was blown away yesterday at Arapahoe - some idiot bag lady was constantly arguing with the conductor for well over 20 minutes because she couldn't bring her shopping cart on board! This caused a complete delay in the arrival times of all the subsequent trains. In addition, she entered on the handicapped ramp, where three people in wheelchairs were literally denied access, missing the train as a result of her actions, along with the rest of the waiting crowd. Another reason why security at these stations would be awesome. Recommended overall. My only other suggestions besides having security would be to upgrade the ticket purchase kiosks at the various stations - the touch screen glass was worn out on several to a point where you literally had to punch it to make a selection, and it took a good five or six kiosks before I finally found one that didn't have a broken debit/credit card reader. Also, can you hurry up and complete the Thornton route? Us folks living in the 'burbs gotta go places too...

Having used public transit all my life in the US and Europe, I rate RTD Light Rail a very high 4 stars. It is SO easy. From the airport, the only issue I have had is finding the W Line at Union Station, as it is a several-blocks walk. The rail is smooth, comfortable, quick, and affordable. It is so pleasant to relax and look out the window rather than shlog through angry traffic and then find, and pay for, parking. It can only get better. Thanks, too, to the friendly transit employees who helped us confused souls buy our tickets at the terminal!

This is annoying to see when you've just walked on to a PACKED train.

Maybe RTD, if they are the ones responsible, could put up more lighting in the almost eerily-light deserted I-25&Broadway stop.

It was peaceful, scenic, and a great way to experience the outdoors in a totally different way. The staff was so warm and welcoming--super friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived. You can tell they genuinely care about your experience and love what they do. We really appreciated the laid-back vibe and aloha spirit even all the way out here in Colorado! The railbikes were easy to use and surprisingly smooth. We pedaled through quiet farmland and open skies--it was beautiful and relaxing. But heads up: if you're going as a couple, it's a bit of a workout! We definitely recommend going with four people if possible to share the pedaling. It makes the whole ride a lot more chill and fun. If you're anywhere near Erie, don't miss this experience. It's perfect for families, friends, or anyone looking for a peaceful adventure off the beaten path. Mahalo to the amazing team--we'll be telling everyone back home about this ride!

Williams St where I parked. I headed toward Steele St and walked to York St. Between N. Williams St & Clayton St. are four sculptures created by Walczak & Heiss. The first one is called "Flood". There was a catastrophic flood in Denver in 1965. 39th Avenue Greenway is collects and directs rainwater during a flood. The second one is called "Zephyr" that is shaped like a train track rounding a corner. It is about the Burlington Zephyr which set a speed record in 1934, running from Chicago to Denver, and it went right through this site. There are two railroad tracks on the greenway. Oh, this Zephyr sculpture is actually a sundial! The third one is called "whereami". It's a 16 ft tall sign with 37 places pointing in different directions with distances on them. This sculpture was made in collaboration with student at the Bruce Randolph School. Then I walked back to my car and drove to near Clayton St to see the fourth sculpture consisting of 2 metal horns named "Conversation". The two megaphones are across from each other and you can talk into them and your voice (even a whisper) will be amplified loud enough to be heard across the way! Afterwards, I drove to Steele St. to see the steel sculpture which spans Steele St. It is called "Eastgate" and looks like a huge ribbon! Reminds me of the old fashioned Christmas Ribbon Candy. Artist DeWitt Godfrey created this piece in 2021. There is a warning sign to climb to safety in case of a flash flood. So yeah, be alert if it has been raining! This is a great space for people to walk, ride bicycles, and also has a play area for children. The playground includes a cement slide and log climbing structures made of wood pieces handcrafted by Nature's Instruments. I've seen other play equipment by this company at another park. Although it's very pricy, it aesthetically blends in! There's also a small area filled with sand in another nearby section. The day I came to check it out (Oct. 5, 2024), there were families, couples, cyclists, and people walking quickly for exercise here. I mainly came to check out the sculptures. It was great to check those out and get a little exercise and some Vitamin D!

It was on our must do list for our first time in colorado. We purchased tickets online about a month before our trip. The one con is you may be seated with people outside your party depending on the table. I wish they would put this disclaimer online so we could've purchased an extra seat to have that privacy and comfortability. The views were immaculate especially with the fresh powder. All the staff on board were great and attentive. The food was pretty good too. I opted for the chicken sandwich; which was flavorful and juicy. We really enjoyed the bar cart LOL and the open air cart was perfect for the views and pictures. Cons: we found a hair in our welcome cookie and with the price of admission i wish we had our own table and space. Overall, i would recommend taking the family and loved ones on this experience.

I also got the burger with a side salad, and honestly, I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't expect much since it's "train food," but the burger was really good--juicy, not dry at all, with a perfectly balanced bun that didn't overpower the meat. I genuinely enjoyed it. The staff was super friendly--very kind, attentive, and welcoming, which really added to the experience. There are several different cars you can choose from: a dining car with a bar, the Vista Dome, or regular coach seating. I went with the Vista Dome and would absolutely choose it again. I also tried the cheesecake. It was okay, but not something I'd order again. That said, everything else more than made up for it. One of the highlights was that there are two open-air cars where you can step outside and take in the views. The ride through the mountains was beautiful, the river was stunning, and stopping near the bridge for about 20 minutes was really cool and gave you time to soak it all in. Overall, this was an amazing experience, and I will absolutely do this again. Highly recommend if you're in the area. I'm sure people with particular passions would find some portions exciting. But for me, a random person with a random kid, it's just ok. There's a level of technical detail about many items in the collection but little story or context. For example, there's a diagram that shows the literally hundreds of parts of a steam engine but nothing that explains at like kid level how it works. And what do the giant cars of the 1960s, as a trend, say about America at that time? I have no idea. I get that they don't want people touching the collection, but the signs and volunteers around feel oppressive at times. Some things like the train passenger cars even appear set up for people to be able to go in, but I've never seen them open across multiple visits. The streetcar has an unattached, standalone lever in front, going into the roped off path -- which seems like SURELY it's there to give kids SOMETHING interactive -- but it also has a "don't touch" sign, which is almost comical, like a flashing red button that just says "don't press this button."
