** FROM STRUGGLE TO HONOR ROLL THANKS TO THERESE ** We turned to Therese FitzRandolph after our son finished sixth grade. At the time, it was clear he was struggling with reading comprehension and test-taking. Therese met with us in person and completed a detailed assessment. For the first time, we had a clear picture of what he needed and how he learned. They met twice a week for 50-minute sessions throughout the next school year. Therese used storytelling, repetition, and verbal cues within a structured approach that gave him tools to follow a narrative, retain detail, and speak with clarity. Their final project was the recitation of a five-paragraph story. She read it aloud once. He took notes, reconstructed it in writing, and repeated the full story back to her word for word. This was not a monologue he had practiced for weeks. It was a cold read, a memory exercise, and a comprehension challenge all at once. He accomplished it through steady work and patient, consistent guidance. As the year unfolded, his confidence grew. His reading improved, and his understanding deepened across subjects. His test scores now place him above grade level. Our son earns honor roll grades, thinks through material carefully, asks questions, and speaks with insight. Therese is a gem. I had concerns about my son's reading level starting in kinder. She has a very long waiting list but she was able to get us in fairly quickly for an assessment. It was very eye opening and confirmed my thoughts. We went on her waiting list and also pursued OT and vision therapy. We have been with her for about a year and my son has had vast improvements. She understands his struggles and has been able to meet him where he was and bring him forward. I cannot recommend her any more highly. As I would like to write good things about the center, it did not suited on my child. It's probably geared more to younger kids. I was hoping there was also more time spent, but I feel the tutorial was in a haste. I understand, she may have another kid to tutor, since she start on time and finish on the dot, exactly 50 mins. Therese is beyond amazing!!! I took my son to her after he fell behind in reading due to Covid and schools being closed for in person learning, so we were doing school via zoom, which was very hard for him to learn how to read over zoom. We began seeing Therese the middle of his 1st grade year. She was amazing and used techniques that he could easily follow, he learned how to break apart words, different letter sounds and vowel combinations, all the different phonics rules, etc. My son has since completed his time with Therese and is doing so well in school. His spelling and reading scores at school are great. I owe it all to Therese and her wonderful way of teaching, I think of her every time he comes home with an A on his spelling test and every night when we read a book for homework. Our granddaughter was struggling with her reading in elementary school. Her mom and dad both had diagnosed learning disabilities. They attended school in the same school district as their daughter and wanted more for her. After we were talking with a number of friends and other teachers and getting suggestions, we started our granddaughter with Ms. Tereses' reading service at the Learning Convergence.We, and her parents, exhausted numerous but unsuccessful resources in her school district. Ms.Therese tested our granddaughter and confirmed her dyslexia. She was quick to build rapport and connect with her. I highly recommend The Learning Convergence. My daughter always struggled with reading. We could never find a consistent tutor that could figure out why she was struggling and how to help. She was the kind of kid who could get by and slipped through all the cracks. It wasn't until her sophomore year of high school when she couldn't fake it anymore. Then we found Therese. Therese changed my daughter's life. We knew early on there was something causing my daughter to not "get it". She could read easily but not retain any if the words. Nor could she answer basic questions about what she just read. This lack of comprehension was seen in other areas too. In my elementary years, my issues with retention and visualization lead to a disinterest in reading. I never pushed myself to read for pleasure and therefore I didn't improve my comprehension skills. My son started working with Therese when he was in 4th grade and struggling with math. Even though math is not Therese's specialty, she worked wonders with him. He went from not being able to understand the simplest of math concepts to a kid who was getting As and Bs in the subject. In the summer after 6th grade, she started working with him on reading comprehension/retention. Again she worked wonders. Over the course of a year, meeting with him twice weekly, she brought him from working and understanding at a 5th grade level to an early 9th grade level - and he hadn't even started 8th grade! I started to notice in late 2016 that my son was struggling with sight words and reading in general. I felt something was wrong and he possibly had a learning disability. I was referred to Ms Therese by my sons school and we had an initial assessment done on him. The areas that my son struggled with was something that could be addressed here and we decided to sign up. We worked with Ms Therese for approximately 15 months, originally 3x a week down to 2x and then just once a week the last month or two. Therese is an amazing Reading and Writing Instructor/tutor. Three years ago our son was transitioning into High School and we knew we needed him to be ready for college. Our son has an IEP (Individualized Education Program) and he needed more assistance with his reading and writing skills. We found Therese online and signed him up for her tutoring sessions after our initial meeting with her. She was very accurate in assessing his needs and in piecing together a curriculum specific to his needs. As a result, our son has made great improvements on all fronts academically. Therese is so knowledgable, warm and professional. She has brought so much positivity to my son's life. My son learned to read because of the hardwork they did together. I felt like we hit the Jackpot after about 2 months of tutoring 3 days a week. We were recommended by my son's teacher (private school). My son is dyslexic (not formally diagnosed) but found by the (public) school district to have a SLD in reading, writing and math. We found this out while waiting for the assessments from SDUSD and after beginning sessions with Therese. Never the less, she provides an assessment to determine where the child is in their learning skills and builds a strong foundation from that.
