Our ASD Story: We have a now 3 1/2 year old who was diagnosed Autism a little after his 2nd birthday. And of course being first time parents we were totally overwhelmed and scared about our new path that we were being placed on. As many of you who are going through the evaluation process it is hard on the parents. This was the same for us. Not knowing how to decide what services to use, or methods to implore left us feeling extremely underqualified as parents. We didn't know what to do or who to turn to. Luckily San Diego County does have very good recourses for those effected by developmental differences. After diagnosis through the San Diego County Regional Center system we were assigned to the ABAcus team as our service providers. Boy can I tell you this was the best thing that could have happened to our family. When we first meet the wonderful folks at ABAcus my sweet boy seemed to lost in his own world. He would not respond to his name, make eye contact, and had lost any language that he had learned in the first few months of his life, just to name a few of his quirks. But when we look at my boy now I am truly amazed by his accomplishments and growth. He now will make and maintain eye contact (even if it's only a few seconds - progress is progress), will respond to his name, and is growing his language every day. And I mean every day - We do ABA Mon-Fri. NONE of this would have been possible without ABAcus. We have two service providers and a supervisor that regularly work with my kiddo, and let me you how amazing they are. They are patient yet firm. They are ALWAYS evaluating his goals to make sure that he is getting as much out of our time together as possible, and it shows. I can tell that they really care about my son and my family. Not only to they care about my son's growth and progress, they also take the time to help us learn the skills we need to help our son succeed. If you are looking for an ABA provider you should definitely give ABAcus a try. They have given us back the ray of light and for that I cannot ever really express how grateful I am for ABAcus, and the folks make it as amazing at it is....

Shannon matched us with two of her advocates who were a good fit for us. They were great and helped us to better understand our place in the process. We chose to have them provide coaching sessions rather than attend the IEP meetings with us. We were then able to approach our daughter's IEP meetings with more confidence and much better results than we were previously getting. When we later needed some special education legal advice, PCA helped us with a referral for a consult with an excellent special ed attorney. Their staff are extremely experienced and knowledgeable. She came highly recommended by a family member, and although we were on a waitlist for a while, it was absolutely worth it. Over the course of about 9 months, Therese worked with my son and made an incredible difference. She was patient, knowledgeable, and truly understood how to support him in a way that built both his skills and his confidence. By the end of our time with her, he had not only improved tremendously but was reading at his grade level. I can't thank Therese enough for the impact she's had on my son's learning journey. Highly recommend Learning Convergence to any family needing reading support!

** FROM STRUGGLE TO HONOR ROLL THANKS TO THERESE **…read more We turned to Therese FitzRandolph after our son finished sixth grade. At the time, it was clear he was struggling with reading comprehension and test-taking. Therese met with us in person and completed a detailed assessment. For the first time, we had a clear picture of what he needed and how he learned. They met twice a week for 50-minute sessions throughout the next school year. Therese used storytelling, repetition, and verbal cues within a structured approach that gave him tools to follow a narrative, retain detail, and speak with clarity. Their final project was the recitation of a five-paragraph story. She read it aloud once. He took notes, reconstructed it in writing, and repeated the full story back to her word for word. This was not a monologue he had practiced for weeks. It was a cold read, a memory exercise, and a comprehension challenge all at once. He accomplished it through steady work and patient, consistent guidance. As the year unfolded, his confidence grew. His reading improved, and his understanding deepened across subjects. His test scores now place him above grade level. Our son earns honor roll grades, thinks through material carefully, asks questions, and speaks with insight. While many students focus on test prep and recall, he learned to engage in real analysis and deeper comprehension of the material. Therese helped our son step into his own mind. Her approach met him where he was and made space for his strengths to emerge. He enters high school with a stronger foundation, a clearer voice, and the belief that he can succeed. We are deeply grateful.

I like the style of teaching but am concerned if it will change due to common core. The 8th graders have ipads they can bring home with a cdma internet access. My peeves are as follows; Lack of action take by staff to eliminate a bulling issue. Several parents complained and yet it went on for 3 years. That student. did not return this year, and for the first time in a long time my daughter enjoys going to school. The pick up and drop off is far to chaotic, parents are constantly blocking residents from their driveways and I have know idea how we get away with completely blocking the bike lane twice a day. Our experience was very different from the school OTA advertises itself to be. My son entered OTA earning A's and B's. Within a short time, his grades fell to D's and F's. Instead of receiving meaningful intervention, he was often treated as though he was the problem. After leaving OTA, his grades improved to B's and C's, which reinforced our belief that the environment played a major role in his struggles. We also experienced sarcastic, dismissive, and demeaning interactions from middle-school teachers. When students tried to advocate for themselves, those concerns could quickly be reframed as behavior issues. Repeated concerns raised with the Executive Director/Principal were often met with promises to investigate or follow up, but meaningful responses frequently never came. OTA promotes full inclusion, strong student support, and an "extensive" enrichment program. In our experience, there was little meaningful transition support for students coming from other schools, and aside from music and robotics, we saw nothing close to the range of extracurriculars advertised. The parent community was the bright spot. Unfortunately, for our family, OTA did not live up to the academic, social, or supportive environment we believed we were choosing.

Kavod has given us a whole lot of amazing learning experiences but I can sum it up by saying that they have cared for my children with respect, consideration and an openness to learning. Both of my children with IEPS have required specialized services and very specific supports. I found the teachers and staff members to be caring, smart, fun and excited about creating a community of respectful and inquisitive learners. No child was ignored, every child was met where they were enthusiastically and the staff worked extremely hard to address needs while simultaneously building on strengths. My kids have both done very well there and the emphasis on languages and culture has been a ton of fun. Projects were meaningful and I appreciated the organized communication and leadership from administration. I would have never imagined my children speaking all these languages so quickly but they have learned because Kavod makes it possible with their organized programming and the support of all team members. As a part of the parent community, I felt welcomed and cared for there as well. In a time where there is so much division, it's a beautiful gift when we can gather, respect one another and learn from one another culturally. Kavod is a gem and I know that their best is yet to come. Don't think, just enroll. Toda Raba, Kavod!
