I wanted to like this place but booking through Orbitz led to a disastrous experience. When you check into a hotel, you want it to be smooth and easy, but this was quite the opposite. First, the parking and registration is not so easy. If you're carrying luggage, be prepared to wheel it down a windy path toward a the reception door. When we were asked for a travel voucher, to which we presented the Orbitz reservation number; however this was not reflected in any reservation for The Latch Inn. They were also booked with no availability, so we had to find other lodging accommodations. We called to ask for an earlier check in since the Orbitz reservation indicated check in only from 4:00pm - 6:00pm. But at 3:15pm there was no answer at The Latch Inn, so we left a message. At 6:10pm a representative from The Latch Inn called us to ask what the message was because she could not find our reservation. Bad experience with Orbitz and with this situation. The Latch Inn has a great ambiance ... but, needs a lot of TLC, a good scrubbing in the corners, carpets washed (better yet, replaced with dark carpets), paint stripping and a clean top-coat of paint. There were two gentlemen working there - not sure if they were brothers or not, but they were overwhelmed with the breakfast service. While the food was very good, the service was painfully slow - plan for in excess of one hour for breakfast, even if there are only 3-4 other tables. When I think of an Inn, I anticipate a caretaker with a lot of knowledge of the area. The two men working had a huge language barrier thus we stuck with the basic communication. And yes, you will hear your immediate neighbors very clearly. read more

Amazing - probably my favorite place I've ever stayed. David & Michael took care of our every need. The Inn is charming and historical and very well appointed. Beautiful views. Every need is met. Stay can be as private or as social as you like! The included breakfast (a variety offered daily 8-10) was gourmet quality. They even fed us late day 1 and made us "to go" breakfasts on day 4 to accommodate ferry schedules. Do yourself a favor and book! read more

My husband and a group of friends stayed at The Latch in October 2024 so that we rented the entire Inn. We were all disappointed with the dirty carpets in the bedrooms, in one case a broken toilet seat that was never fixed even though there was an attempt by management to do so. It should be replaced. Our friends staying in the Library Room had a leak in the bathroom ceiling. Others noted their rooms were not cleaned to the standard they expected and some felt the sheets might not have been changed. The carpets ideally need replacing but at the very least a good clean. The breakfast food was not up to the standard of the previous owners; the service was slow and the coffee undrinkable. I noticed the coffee pots were not cleaned out at the end of the day so I believe that the previous days coffee was served the following morning until it was used up. All in all not a good experience. We had all previously stayed there in 2022 and 2023 when it was under different ownership and we couldn't have been more pleased with the entire experience. It is extremely disappointing that such a beautiful Inn in a perfect location has gone down hill so quickly. Further, I suggest that you check your bill before leaving to ensure it is correct. Stayed at the latch this past weekend and was super wonderful!!! Stayed in the governors room for one night. They have a lovely sitting room and fireplace. The bed was very comfortable. Frances and peter were super helpful and great. Would definitely recommend. The breakfast was also delicious. read more

The bed was very comfortable and the room quiet - everything was so clean. In the morning we had a beautiful breakfast that accommodated my gluten free, vegan lifestyle. It was one of the best stays. This place is delightfully outstanding! What an enchanting inn! The rooms are elegant and comfortable. The decorating honours the period and displays great coordination and sensitivity to the original. The location is tranquil with a lovely welcoming garden. The architecture is superb. We had read positive reviews of The Latch prior to phoning them for a reservation. When we arrived there was no one in attendance but we had been sent a text giving us the access code for the front door and how to find our room. It soon became evident that we were the only guests booked in for this weekend and when we found the room was not what we expected I started phoning the various contact phone numbers, one of which resulted in a recorded voice in a foreign tongue (not French).. After leaving several messages I finally got a return call which resulted in our taking a different room. At no time up to then, or since then, have we seen anyone. Our first hint that things were not as viewed on their web site was the paint peeling off the front door, or it might of been the dead plants. The dirty carpets in the hallways that lead to a sitting room filled with dusty artificial flowers did not bode well. The restaurant was not in service, and the breakfast part of our B&B was a few small packages of less than appealing cereal, a coffee maker and a few packaged cookies together with milk and cream. Oh, and no room cleaning service. We could go on but we feel you probably get the idea. As we write this review we are about leave and we've still not seen anyone, it's almost spooky and it's not even Halloween. It wouldn't take much, just a bit of maintenance and cleaning, fresh flowers and a human face to bring back it's earlier glory. We had a great dinner tonight at the Latch under the new management. I had the ribeye steak with crab topping and it was done just right. Excellently! My companions had the halibut and it was quite good they said. We shared a white chocolate mousse for desert and Jennifer, the new manager/owner, also gave us complementary slice of pumpkin spice cheesecake which was also excellent. What happened?!!? We had a reservation, booked directly with the Latch. Showed up at 3:30. Nobody was there and doors were locked. We called the number posted on the door and got a recording saying to leave a message. We did. Never heard back. Would highly recommend the Pier Hotel on the waterfront. They took us in and made us happy. Sidney is a lovely, lovely town and we enjoyed our stay despite the Latch. read more

The price is reasonable for the portions. I would recommend the 4 course and get the appetizer platter. However unfortunately the fish was full of bone's but the ambience was beautiful and the service was lovely and the desserts were delicious overall it took two hours. The Latch Inn and Restaurant has been around for many years, starting life in the 1920's as the summer residence to the then-current Lieutenant-Governer of BC. The place had had its ups and downs over the years - I've never been to it before, and I was not even sure that it still existed as a restaurant, especially since it was not listed on Yelp! In any event, we made a reservation for earlier this week on a Wednesday evening. First off, the building is a wonderfully preserved and restored representation of its origins. The three of us essentially had the Inn and restaurant to ourselves that evening, and after ordering, the waiter took us on a leisurely tour of the whole place. The accommodations were kept true to their 1920's character, with some original murals, and other amenities that were more or less in the style of the era. But for the presence of a TV in every room, one could imagine having been transported back in time! But this is a restaurant review! The menu offered something to suit most every taste. I had Oysters Rockefeller as a starter which was exquisite. My dining partners had steak neptune and Salmon respectively, and I had the seared halibut steak. Rave reviews from my fellow diners on their choices. The halibut was nicely cooked and presented, but I found it to be a tad on the too salty side, owing to the lemon caper glaze - it could have been toned down a bit. Our server, Gavin was very attentive - after all, we were the only diners there! I suspect that this restaurant has only recently re-started... Gavin had mentioned that it has come under new ownership recently. I'd go back in an instant however. The old-world ambiance, the service, the food are all tops. Absolutely wonderful and memorable dinner! Everything was delicious and much of it was hand cured or home made from ingredients either from the owners own farm or local suppliers. Luigi and his wife are fantastic hosts who have a great passion for their food and care for their guests like family. We had an antipasto platter to share that was out of this world, and I loved the cabbage rolls. We also enjoyed the mussels, and steak with a peppercorn sauce. For dessert highly recommend the cherries jubilee flambé - quite the show as its being prepared! Will definitely be back! read more

Went for dinner for a huge celebration for a family member which was pre book several weeks ahead and I've been to a lot high end restaurant threw out my years but this place tries hard at something they will never achieve and ill go into detail on this one and maybe it might help them but I doubt it there very clueless about high end standards of service. First off I would not recommend dinning here if ur a group over 6 there just not capable of doing it I took a quick glance at there kitchen after are meal to try to figure out why it was not great. From the start which was 6 30 booking which we ended just after 8 30 took about 20 minutes to get water and then half the drinks were served with some soda pops poured out the can which is brought to popped and left for u to pour and bottle of wine that improperly chilled which stop any other bottle from being bought, and on a side not half the list of beers were not available cause of no stock and this becomes threw out the night of ordering. So after 30 minutes finally got food orders in they have a healthy number of portions for each sub heading from salads starters-appetizers-entrees I did not see a desert menu cause we brought our own cake thankfully. So I ordered the caprice salad which 10 minutes later I am notified they are now out of and only one person at the table will be getting a order out of the 4 people ordering it, so I ask for caesar salad then told I cant cause its table side made and made for 2 which then frustrates me cause there lack of food u think they would just do it so I chose the greek salad. As salads and appy came out my greek was pitful not dressed with any type of olive oil if there was one feta cheese of no quality and more onions than any other vegy and maybe half a tomato used for 12 dollars. The one caprice that did come out lacked everything and mozzarella used just sucked and was elastic like and the plate was small compared to what my greek looked like. I also sample a crab cake it was tough, crust was to far done. For my main coarse i got the fillet mignon for myself this was so done badly from everything on this plate and i am a meat eater myself i have beef 5 days out 7 a week so i know my meat. We had 5 people out of 12 order this meal. All steaks were beyond cold and if i asked for a reheat it would of been beyond my liking of medium rare and the sizes of steaks all varied and im pretty sure me and another person got stiffed with smaller portion and one order of steak was nearly blue since it was larger cut. Along side the steak was carats,squash and 2 asparagus which were almost cold enough were they were going limp with a sour semi sweet onions that didn't go with the plate at least they got the mushrooms rights, they second side was quino i should of substituted for something else now this was totally uncooked since half was still cruchy almost like sand and that was 35 dollars on the menu. Bread was serverd threw out the night was the one thing that kept somewhat contempt it was a type of sourdour/focaccia bread. Went for dinner on the basis of a friends recommendation. There was a large group in the private dining room but we were the only other people there. We got menus and water and then we were ignored as all four staff went rapidly back and forward to the private room. After 15 minutes I got hold of a waitress and said "we've been here 15 minutes and no one has even asked us if we would like a drink, maybe you are just too busy to cope". She failed to reassure us and we got up to go. Then the owner arrived plates in hand for the other room. His reaction on being told the same thing as the waitress was to say "there's the door, there's the door, f**k off." We were only too happy to oblige. Do not go to this place. read more

I wanted to have a romantic getaway for Valentine's day and heard from a friend that The Latch Inn was under new management and the food in the restaurant was really good. I checked out their website and was immediately intrigued by the history of this 100 year old establishment. The overall look and feeling of this rustic house is very inviting. It's right on the water next to the Marina in Sidney. When we checked into our room we found it was quite spacious and comfortable. The fireplace in the room was a nice surprise. The dining room was downstairs and the food was excellent! We had Caesar salad for an appetizer and I ordered the ribs and my partner ordered the halibut. The ribs were so delicious my girlfriend wanted to switch plates! We shared plates and I found the halibut to be excellent too. Our desert was Crème Brûlée and was almost as good as the time I had it in Paris. Our overnight stay was perfect because it was so quiet out there, away from the busy city. read more
