Both of our children (who are very different from each other!) have thrived here. It's clear that Rayuela is a place that supports all kinds of learners and personalities. As a non-native Spanish-speaking household, the language aspect was especially important to me. Both of my kids have grown comfortable not only with the Spanish language but also with the diverse cultures that come with it. I'm confident in saying that I have bilingual learners. The teachers are absolutely wonderful and kind. They treat my kids like their own. Even though the school is play-based, both of my children have shown strong academic growth. My oldest was more than ready for kindergarten, and my youngest is on the same path. I can't say enough good things about Rayuela. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm, caring community where their child can grow socially, academically, linguistically, and holistically.

Ms. Kanthi was my teacher and now she owns the same school and teaches my kids! She is absolutely amazing! All of the staff are incredible. Ms. Fatema, Ms. Chrissy, Ms. Kim, Ms. Sumudu, Ms. Raquel, Ms. Angelica, Ms. Hazmik. Literally every single one of them. All of them treat the kids as if they were their own, so much love and patience with the kids. My kids love going to school and they actually get excited about learning. Ms. Fatema's science class has been amazing in instilling a love for learning for our oldest child. We can't wait for our other kids to take Ms. Fatema's science class and Ms. Kim's science class. My oldest is definitely ready for kindergarten solely because of Ms. Fatema. The school has great hours for working parents from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Hot lunch is available for an additional fee. The school goes all out for all of the holidays and graduation. There are lots of opportunities for parent involvement should you want to be involved. The environment is screen-free and true to the Montessori method.

We are an English speaking only family and have always wished we spoke another language, so we absolutely loved the idea of a language immersion school for our son. He has already picked up French, Spanish, and Mandarin, and it has been amazing to watch how much he has learned and grown since starting here. Another thing we absolutely love is the food program. The children are provided organic, vegan meals and snacks every day, with produce coming from the school garden and local farmers' markets. I always tell people it's like having a farm-to-table experience at preschool! The kids also get to participate in and learn from the gardens, which makes the whole experience even more meaningful. People are often surprised by how well my son eats his fruits and vegetables, and I truly think being exposed to fresh food and gardening at school has played a big part in that. We've even had the opportunity to taste the food ourselves at special events, and everything has been delicious. Sometimes we can't believe it's all vegan and we aren't even a vegan family! (posted some photos for reference) But most importantly, the teachers here are the true gems of PGGS. They make you feel like family. They genuinely know each child. Their personalities, quirks, interests, and individual needs. You can tell how much they truly care about them. He walks in happy, and that's worth a lot to a parent. Some changes I've seen at home since he started: He's learning to handle his emotions. When he gets frustrated, he calms himself down in a way he couldn't before. His manners are also excellent now, and people comment on it. Mealtime is completely different. The lunches are catered, organic and vegan, and all the kids sit and eat together. He picked up their habits fast and now eats like a little adult at our table too. Potty training was the big surprise. The teachers worked on it with him, and after just two weeks he was asking for the potty at home by himself. We had been stuck on that for a while, so this felt like a miracle. Every day is in French, English, Spanish and Mandarin. I'm a big believer in learning languages early for brain development, and he picks things up like a sponge. I also like that there's a real daily curriculum. Plenty of schools spend their energy on marketing and fancy websites. This one spends it on the kids. There's structure and actual learning, not just free play all day. The regular updates and photos are a nice bonus. I get to see his day, and it gives us something to talk about at dinner. The parents are a great group too. Kind, interesting, easy to talk to at pickup. If you're in Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Mt Washington or South Pasadena and looking for a preschool, go see this place. Our son had involvement in some early start programs, a mix of nanny's and babysitters, but little to bring him out of his shell. On a recommendation, we enrolled him at Flintridge. We witnessed our son flourish, socially blossom into a far more gregarious and enthusiastic participant in play, and embrace his weekend extracurriculars with more vigor and attention. I assumed at first this was just the result of more socialization, but the more time I spent with the teachers on this small campus, I realized it was the result of their curriculum, compassion, and genuine interest in each child's success. My wife and I found ourselves shocked when our once shy wallflower took front stage of a school recital and pantomimed a song and dance we never once rehearsed at home, unbeknownst to us but no less welcome. We had every opportunity to involve ourselves in the day-to-day of the class without any news or emails feeling overbearing. Pick Up and Drop Off was always pleasant, and the fellow parents we met felt like community. I say without hyperbole that I will truly miss Flintridge Montessori, and recommend it to any parent and child without reservation. It's a very different and richer experience than most American schools. "Diversity" has become narrowly defined. But the international diversity of the students' families is unmatched at other SoCal schools. Yes, many French and Western European family's, as might be expected. But we have families in our class from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, for example. My five year old is already correcting my French (which is admittedly terrible!) and she loves the school and it's the emphasis on language and expression. The teachers are patient and supportive and providing a good balance between structure and flexibility.

My son has Autism Level 1 and does need some support, so at first I wasn't sure how it would go. We decided to try just one class, and after that very first day, he was already asking to go back. That says everything. We've loved it so much that we enrolled him for the entire summer program. While he's sad that the Saturday class has ended, he's excited to return in the summer. Señora Jackie is wonderful with the children, and the rest of the teachers are just as amazing.
