The Lanes are a myriad twisting complex of traffic free pedestrian streets, packed with independent shops, corporate chain shops, pubs, restaurants, art galleries, eateries, coffee shops, overpriced jewelry shops...fun to wander and indulge if you have funds to do so. If I can compare the Lanes to anything, it would probably be like Haight Ashbury Street in SF without all the homeless people or Melrose in LA without the celebrity sightings. Ultimately, it's a number of indie or mom & pop shops crammed in small alleyways (think London)-- tightly packed like homes in Daly City. But each one is unique! That's what I loved most about shopping here. The names of these shops are just as hilarious as they are unique. Just to give you a taste, I came across the stores "Pussy" & "Suck it and Sea". Maybe shield your kids' eyes when passing by these stores? I think it's even more hilarious that their version of dollar tree is called "Poundland". For me, hanging out in the Lanes was more like a walk down memory lane. Ultra fun fact: I studied abroad in Brighton! So coming back to this magical place was a different experience for me than it would be for most people. It was nostalgic. I think just walking around and window shopping is just plain fun. Plus, there's some pretty great eats closeby. If you're in the mood for afternoon tea, stop by the Little Tea Shop in the Lanes! They've got some excellent scones. And you can't go wrong with any of the pubs around the area. If you're ever in Brighton, make sure you stop by the Lanes! Just be sure to get there before 4 or 5pm because the shops do close around that time. Other than that, have a looksie in the shops. They're bloody awesome! read more

It's a shopping district with several small narrow alleyways and cobble stone paths where you navigate like a maze. A lot of independent shops and cafes. It's not amazing, but it's one of the main spots in Brighton and a good spot to spend a few hours. A quick walk away from the beach. read more

This is one of those charming places that give a lot of character to place, which is probably why Yelp refers to it as 'Local Flavour'. Basically these are a series of laneways that meander around the place that contain lots of shops and restaurants. In a sense it could be the old town, though considering how narrow and twisting these lanes are this could actually be pretty old. A bit of a hike to the station, but quite close to the beach. We had heard so much about The Lanes that we decided to make a visit. What a disappointment. We were expecting something like The Shambles in York. This was narrow roads full of tatty shops and overpriced bistro type eateries. On top of this, underground parking at £4 an hour and three floors down and the lifts didn't work. When visiting Brighton it is absolutely essential that you visit The Lanes - and be careful not to confuse it with the North Laine which is a different part of the centre of town. Getting these mixed up is not a problem... unless you want to annoy the locals! :) The Lanes is a very quaint area with lots of beautiful little twittens (a Sussex word to essentially describe a tiny little interconnecting lane). Here you will find boutique shops, lots of wonderful restaurants, cupcakeries (yes they are a thing) and even the resident psychic. Just remember to keep a track of where you are as even those of us who have lived here many years still have the tendency to get a little lost sometimes! read more

Brighton is an absolutely wonderful place (if you avoid Churchill Square). The beautifully unique shops, smiling shop workers, graffiti'd walls, random bikes on walls, and lovely window installations as well as the wafts of incense sticks as you walk around. This place is so instagramable that you will need to bring a charged battery pack if you plan on being here all day. There is so much jewellery to look at in these parts, in fact I went to The Lanes to choose my engagement ring. Everything from custom to vintage is in the windows just waiting for you to try on. read more

The lanes is actually two different areas split by the North Street which runs up to the clock tower and the churchill square shopping centre. On one side is the Old Lanes where you can find the antique shops and jewellers and is generally a little more old fashioned (although is modernising all the time) than the North Lanes which is about three streets full of unusual shops and delis. The focal point of the North Lanes is Kensington Gardens which is a pedestrian zone and has some lovely restaurants and pubs (try the Kensington Garden Cafe which has a balcony overlooking the whole street), bookshops and an antique market which has so far survived the modernism. The whole Lanes is a world away from (although walking distance to) the high street shops of the Churchill Square complex and is a must for anyone visiting Brighton. read more

Walking around the lanes is a favorite pass time for pretty much everyone in Brighton. It is really beautiful, especially at night when its all lit up (and during xmas!) . However if you are trying to get down there on a sunny Saturday it does literally turn into carnage and as someone who can't stand crowds that gets a bit much. Walking around this area is a great tourist spot, lots of unique stores and restaurants to check out. The Lanes can get pretty narrow and it reminds me of alleyways in Asia. The Lanes is one of my fav places to go to shop. Its fall of unique shops from antique to ones selling instruments. Parts of the lanes feels like walking down Diagon alley! There's something magical on these bendy streets. It's probably my wonky geography rather than a pavement conspiracy but you'll notice something new each time you take a footstep. There's some amazing art sprayed on the walls around this area with lots of boutique shops covering all sort of fashion tastes. There's gadgets to sexy shops as well as lots of independent foody places to unwind and enjoy healthy food from. There are market stalls at the weekend where people sell mac makeup at a discount as well as all sorts of curios. read more

However I'm really not the type of person that likes to walk in a crowd and queue just to get out of a pathway. Go on a weekday morning. It also irritates me to see so much merchandise with a cannabis leaf on it, and having to march so slowly through so many smokers. Overpriced and overated - but do have an unmistakable charm that make you forgive them for these failings ! Filled to the brim with jewellers, eateries and gift shops meaning that there is something for everyone (just don't forget your credit card !) The Lanes are contained within East Street, West Street, North Street and Grand Junction Road This is what shopping is all about. Lots of individual shops selling a wide range of goods that stand out from the usual high street names. You can escape from traffic and just wander and soak up the atmosphere. I visited The Lanes a few years ago on a trip to Brighton and absolutely loved it.Continuous small lanes of antique shops,jewellery,clothes shops and cafes all intertwined provides a really unique and different day out.Alot of the clothes shops here have quirky,kitsch items that you wont find in many other shops and although I'm not really one for antiques I did find it great to just stop and look in the windows of the antique stores just to see what they had on offer.A lovely place to visit. read more

The Lanes in Brighton is a fantastic maze of quirky antique shops, alternative boutiques and weird but wonderful cafes. Having a mooch around the lanes enables you to find all kinds of little treasures hidden in the wonderous backstreet shops. The further your wander into the lanes the more wonderous it becomes. It is like stepping back in time to York in the olden days. Brighton is a gem in itself, but The Lanes has something for everyone. Drop your mum off at the hairdressers, settle your nan with a cream tea in one of the many cafes, leave your dad marvelling in wonder at the old muskets in antique shop windows and run off with your little brother to cover yourself in tattoos, piercings and wacky clothing. The Lanes in Brighton are brilliant, one of my favourite places and I don't normally like shops. It is a maze of small, unusual shops, mainly antique shops but there are also shops selling clothes, music, gorgeous original jewellery and some tasty cafes, quite a few of which cater for vegetarians. There is a fantastic bookshop which sells new and secondhand books and I could spend hours and lots of money there. The Lanes is so much more interesting than the main shopping street. If you are looking for a present for someone try here first as you will quite likely get something original and different. It can get very crowded especially in the summer with lots of tourists but is well worth a visit. read more

My favourite area of Brighton, the Lanes.. so beautiful,nice shops, small streets with a lot of people passing by.. I always enjoy for going for a walk in the lanes during the day.. Not as full of antique shops as twenty years ago due to rising lease prices but still quaint and unusual. If you are looking for one off antique jewellry pieces then this is the place. I often go there to shop for people for special occassions and am never disappointed. As well as Victorian and Art Deco pieces you will find some contemporary jelweelry shops selling unusual handmade designs usually in silver. Along side these as you traverse the narrow ancient cobbled lanes you will come across unusual quirky houseware shops and just when you fancy a break a wide range of pit stops will come into view from the absolute place to go for a hot chocholate to champagne bars if you're feeling rich and the usual pasta and eons of coffee bars. Theres a nice little square where its nice to sit and people watch in the summer as you rest your feet. Can get very crowded i've always preferred going in winter but summer is great too to sit out with a drink. The Lanes are 3 (or 4?) roads long.
