Okay, if I'm going to have to compare riding the subway on the L vs. other parts of the city.....I certainly like this one the best. Sure, the trains are kinda messed up on the weekends...but it is the burden we bear for having one of, or the only, 24 hours public transport systems in the world. Sure, I might have to squish on for the 9am Manhattan bound....but at least these are people I'm okay being squished into. The peeps who ride the L train may look dirty, but most aren't. In fact, most smell quite delightful. I'm the last person that wiggles onto the train full well declaring "I am sacrificing all personal space" for this ride...iPod in place I close my eyes in the sea of people....and I wait 3 stops...but the people I stand next to (or under) smell pleasant. I can't say I'd be okay with having 4 other bodies against me in a subway situation on the regular unless I was with my beautiful strangers from the L train. read more

The L train is one of my main reasons for wanting to move to Williamsburg... I've taken it during rush hour, I've taken it on the weekends... The L train has never been late. I know if you've never been on the L you're thinking, "Late? Huh? Don't NY trains run whenever?" THE L TRAIN HAS A BOARD THAT TELLS YOU WHEN IT'S COMING!! I can't tell you how excited this makes me... no more staring off into a subway tunnel wondering when the blasted train is going to decide to make an appearance. Also, there is something extremely sexy about this train... I've been on other trains and they're just not the same. It's much wider and more accommodating. I'm not sure what it is. It does get packed, but what train doesn't during the height of rush hour? The more disenchanted I become with the Q or taking the 2/3 to Nevins to transfer to the 4/5 to transfer to the 6... I know I'll still have to transfer at Union Square, but come on... 5 mins to Manhattan from Brooklyn? I'll take it! read more

It is a well-known fact amongst New Yorkers that L stands for "love to hate that something is always wrong with the L train." Seriously, how is it that there is ALWAYS something wrong with the L train? One summer it was all shuttle buses all the time on all the weekends. One Halloween it was all shuttle buses. Then there are mechanical problems that suspend service in both directions from 8th Ave. to Myrtle-Wyckoff, which is where the train's usefulness ends anyway. And then it's plagued by smoke conditions often enough for me to think that the MTA has hired Lost's Smoke Monster for kicks and giggles. And if that wasn't enough, the train is filled with hipsters. Hipsters who crowd the platforms with sweaty drunk bodies when the train inevitably does not come. read more

It is the L-Train which I depend on to gets me where I gots to get to. LOL Sometimes it decides to be crowded, sometimes it decides to be kind of empty. It's going to get 3 stars though! I experienced a weekend when it decided to go on vacation for a few days. Days like that sometimes has a way of helping you appreciate things. Thank you L Train! :-) Oh yeah, I almost forgot. I also love the signs that actually tell you how long it will be before the L will arrive. Once again these things are appreciated when you don't have them. read more

" The next BROOKLYN-BOUND, L TRAIN will arrive in TWELVE minutes." Ahh snap! 12 mins pass. Um, where the train? " The next BROOKLYN-BOUND, L TRAIN will arrive in SEVEN minutes." Ah, okkkkkaaayyy.... " The next BROOKLYN-BOUND, L TRAIN will arrive in NINE minutes." WTF?!? Goes upstairs. Talks to MTA employee. "What's with the L?" It's not running in both directions due to an investigation at 6th ave. Shit! *goes to Whole foods. Comes back. Eats on bench in station. Walks back to L. Listens to lady who apparently just learned how to sing and wants to show it off. Manhattan -bound eventually shows. "This train is skipping 6th ave." "Do you turn around and go back to BK after?" "YES" Rides slow-moving train. Sees cops huddled at 6th ave, blood smeared on the train across platform, and a body bag. "Damn.. Does this mean I'm gonna be stuck in Brooklyn?!?!"* *bc of the stalled murderous train read more

I find it hilarious when they call this the "hipster" train line when the hipsters are really only on the train for 3 or 4 stops in Brooklyn which leaves lots of available seats for almost the whole train line for the rest of Brooklyn; bushwick, east new york. Lol give me a break! Very rare to spot a hipster in east new york, and more recently you see more hipsters in bushwick now that Williamsburg is getting too crowded and expensive, but I digress. This is the most convenient train line in my neighborhood and by my job! You can go from Brooklyn to manhattan in 25-35min depending on the stop. Super fast but also super crowded during rush hour. This train comes at least every 5min sometimes even less time like every 3 min; during rush hour but every 15-30 minutes in the wee hours on weekends which really blows when you're tired as hell from a night of partying. You can easily transfer to other train lines if you need to get to midtown, east side, or west side of the city (4,5,6, N, Q, R, F, 1,2,3, A, C, E). Its also a great way to get to rockaway, Flatbush, or Jamaica if you take the train to broadway junction and transfer to the A,C, J, or Z train lines. read more

If by "hipster" you mean a young twenty-something kid with a sense of style, well then ya, I guess there are alot of "hipsters" in New York City. DUH And ya, the subway is alittle crowded during rush hours. DUH Weekdays on the L Train are a thing of beauty. A train every 3-6 minutes, always announced and always displayed. Always clean and well-lit, and rarely a begging bum. Weekends are not as reliable, but still better than average. Trying to get home after midnight on any train you'll have to wait a while. The announcements aren't always spot on, and the chick will probably just end up giving you a splitting headache. All things concerned, I consider the L as good as it gets in NYC. read more

Crowded, cute, loud, hit-or-miss, new(ish), and pretty much everything else in between. No wonder it suffers an identity crisis: it can't figure out whether it's a Brooklyn hipster or a Manhattan downtowner. Still, it elicits most of my entries at ny.subwaycrush.com. Damn those people looking FINE on the L. read more

What was once considered the most feared train has now become the most hip...at least from the stations in Manhattan to Williamsburg. I lived on the last stop of the L on the Brooklyn side (Canarsie - Rockaway Pkway) for 25 years up until 2 months ago and from some of the Yelp reviews I read, all they comment is on the hipsters. Well there are more than hipsters on the train; especially once you go past Williamsburg. Shady? yes, but depending on the time of day. I would say the L train has improved a lot since however long I could remember (early 90's?). The trains were old, dirty, and lots of pick pocketers. I get scared riding on the train especially being the only Asian female on the train. Yes, I did get a lot of stares from the straphangers but there was nothing I could do about it. Trust me, I get nervous every time I had to get on the L train. As time went by, the MTA began to put more investment into building new trains and the L line was one of the first ones to have the futuristic-like trains you see today. At one point, it was rated as the cleanest train in the city. I can't guarantee that it's safe (whether you're in Canarsie or Williamsburg) but it's a smooth ride for the most part of the journey into Manhattan. I agree it breaks down here and there. I especially hate it when I'm one stop away from Union Sq and there's a sick passenger on the train which requires everyone to get off and wait for the next L to come. Why couldn't they just take the sick passenger off the train instead? Anyhow..that's my 2 cent on the L. read more

I feel like the L gets a hard rap. All I've heard is that the L is the crappiest of all the lines. I kind of like its non-pretentious vibe and grungy-ness. It also has a special place in my heart because I was able to try out my pole dancing skills on Saturday night coming home from a party. read more

The only thing good about the L train is updates on how long it'll take for the next train to take. But then again, you never know how many L trains in a row you have to watch pass by because you can't squeeze your sorry ass on. So really, there's nothing good about the L train. read more

Wow.... took the L train back to Manhattan this evening to transfer to the Q train at Union Square and as I walked through the corridor between the L and the R, N, Q train at Union Square, I saw a line of people clogging about 4/5ths of the hallway. It looked soooo much like a bread line from the Great Depression. I rarely take the L train, but I have never saw a bread line towards the stairs to get on this train. MTA, what is the deal-io? You take money from hard-working New Yorkers by raising the fares, but are giving really bad, unreliable service on most, if not ALL, of the subway lines. read more

Say what you want about the hipsters, but the L is ok in my book. First off, I like how the stations in Manhattan have the countdown clocks, and for the most part, they are accurate in saying when the train is arriving. The few times I do take this line (weekend and rush hour) the trains come pretty often. The trick is to get on at 8th Ave or 6th Ave if you hate the crowds. Obviously, a lot of people get off at Bedford, so once that stop is done it's basically smooth sailing. read more

Me on the L Train on a GOOD day: Crackhead says out loud to everyone "Excuse me! Pardon the interruption! I am selling candy! Not for no church! Not for no basketball team! But for me! To help keep me out off the streets and out of trouble!" Curtis thinking to himself "Yeah I bet." Me on the L Train on a BAD day: Oh that's right...you can't even get on the L train on a bad day. The east village residents are serviced by one of two train lines. The F/V all the way down at 2nd/1st Ave and Houston. Or the L Train at 1st and 14th. Both options suck if you live on Avenue B. Being that I'm at 10th St, I opt for the L Train to take me to Union Square to make my connections. Some days I pray to see the bus pulling in front of my apartment, so that I don't have to walk down to the L. I dread seeing that ghastly train pulling out of the tunnel from Williamsburg just packed with people. There have been so many days where I have to wait on another train because the one that just pulled up is over capacity. I've actually seen trains filled with people just cruise right through the 1st ave stop? What the hell? Did the conductor personally check with everyone on board to make sure that wasn't their stop? Yesterday I walked down into the station, dampened from the rain that attacked me on the hike from my apartment. Cold and actually embracing the warm stale stench of the subway platform, I started to get within eyes view of the clock that tells you the next time of the arriving train. 23min! How suiting. read more

The Next Manhattan Bound Train will depart in approximately fifteen minutes!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! As a part of my daily routine and representin my hood, REPRESENT!!!! Actually getting on.... Well the conductors are either trying to close the doors on you, or some rude A** peoples wont back up from the door when it's busy as all hell. Thank God I get on at 6 in the morn and 330 in the aft or I'd be that much more of a Jerk... Hopefully it doesn't blow by the station with 3 people in it. Definitely check the MTA site and make sure it's actually running on the weekends. read more

Hurray, the L train has implemented train-arrival message boards, or countdown clocks, that has only been around in Europe since the early spring of 1982, or something like that. And those countdown clocks are about as accurate as telling the time from looking at the sun. Until a coundown minute on that display is actually one minute and not six, I'll just keep to the more low-tech method of looking into the void of that light at the end of the tunnel. read more

"Bloody L..." The cars are operating-theatre bright, but I usually don't notice cause my face winds up buried behind an unwashed armpit or an overstuffed knapsack. This train gets crowded at 14th. I like to take the long way 'round and catch a train at 8th; just to avoid the crowd and get a seat. Catch any other stop on the line, and you're lucky to find a spot to stand. On every ride, there's the usual round-up of rude riders. There's the jerk who leans against the center-pole so that seven other folks can't hang on. There's the character who practically sits on the hand rail, spilling over onto anybody who's unlucky enough to sit by the door. There's the guy who spreads his legs out 'cause he's airing-out his crotch infection. They're all there, but I've saved the worst for last. You've run into him; that guy who stands in the doorway and moves for nobody; just to prove...fuck-all. There could be old people or moms with strollers trying to get in the car, and he just stands there like he's waiting to get "serviced" from behind. There's really only one thing to say to them... "Hey buddy, It's a door, not a glory hole!" It works every time. read more

It seems everybody has such great things to say about the L train o_O. Yea okay, we both know I'm joking. If youve ever ridden the L train you know you either have to not be in a rush or you left your house at least 30mins earlier than you usually do. The inconsistency of this train is horrendous. It's at though mta made this line specifically to annoy new yorkers.....and I must say, "job well done." I got lucky today because with the rain being on and off the slow train ride seemed quicker than usual. Not so lucky for those people at the Canarsie stop a few minutes ago. The platform was packed (in other words no air was circulating) and both trains had their doors closed and conductors just chilling inside. Insane huh. This train is a 2.25 game of russian roulette. Sigh, I guess I'm up next. read more

Dear L Train, I used to ride you (that's what she said) quite frequently in my high school years when I lived in Canarsie. I distinctly remember one night whilst on my way home from the junior prom and waiting with one of my friends at the train station in Manhattan. Convo went as follows: "What train do you take?" She asked me. "I take the L train" I said proudly. "HA! You mean the LOSER train?? AND your name starts with L, so you're a loser too!" She said mockingly.* (Stuttering) "Um, uh, it's NOT a loser train!! And I'm NOT a loser Miss MAN!" I replied and blew her a raspberry like a 5 year old. That event really made me evaluate you on a deeper lever. My 16 year old brain thought you were cool, but then I realized it was a late night. Your service sucks donkey balls at night. And then on the weekends, I had to take a damn shuttle bus to certain stops. You also made me late for various meetings with friends. Not. Cool. Years later, save for some brand spankin' new train cars, your service hasn't changed a bit. Oh yeah, and THEN there was this past winter. Right around Xmas when we had the blizzard in NYC. My BEST FRIEND was trapped at B'way Junction station for 12 HOURS freezing his ass off & starving cuz you wouldn't go further. Luckily he had brownies made by yours truly to stave off his ravenous hunger. SMH. Made me supremely happy I no longer have to take you. I think the only good thing about you now besides the new cars is that soooo many people have missed connections from riding your line. Wait- idk if that's a good thing or not, but people on your line seem to be really flirty...and kinda hot too. Ah well, I don't miss taking you in the least. Buh bye, Lauren H. *Lush? Yes. Lover? Definitely. Loser?? No. Effin. Way. read more

Anyone who largely praises the L train clearly doesn't have to ride it during rush hour/their definition of a commute is probably to and from their MacBook Pro to see if mommy and daddy's latest check was properly cashed into their checking account. My intense hatred towards hipsters aside, the frequent weekend service changes ("No trains EVER AGAIN!") and constant rush hour malfunctions make the fact that the train comes fairly frequently a moot point. Besides, you can never fit on the first one that comes in anyways unless you live super far out (read: Myrtle-Wyckoff), and the one you get on will probably break down, forcing you to go either into Queens or down to Downtown Brooklyn to get into Lower Manhattan. I'm moving to Bed Stuy (off of the G) next month, and I couldn't be happier. L train, never again. read more

The L train has some room for improvement....but so do I I suppose. What I love: safe. Clean. Best entertainers. HOT HOT MEN ride this train. Holy Shit. And lets talk about the weekend construction.... BUT...the L is my train and I love it.... read more

L train, I'm only giving you 2 stars because without you'd I'd have to swim. Actually that's a lie, I could take the J so you better be nice L train. Tonight you were not nice. Not nice at all. I got to the L train platform at Union Square and there was already a gaggle of hipsters waiting. I stood around for about 8 minutes when finally the conductor of the L train on the 8th ave side makes an announcement saying there is a train stalled between 1st Ave & Bedford. We are then instructed to take the N to Canal, change for the J, take the J to Myrtle/Wycoff and change back to the L back in the direction of Manhattan. For real? Why don't you do all that bullshit? Just fix the fucking train. Geez. Fair hike, give me a break! Just yesterday the ticket machines weren't working (and luckily I had $2 in change) and now this. Ha! After waiting it out for about 40 minutes (they have to fix the train, I figured it would be faster than the alternate route) I shared a cab with 3 other stranded Williamsburgers. Actually, every other person had the same idea but luckily we saw a Northside car and he agreed to take us...we probably stole someone else's car. Oops, well...there was 4 of us so there's that... I love Northside. Thanks for swooping in to save us. I'd like to bill the MTA for our car fare. read more

Average. When it works, it works really well. When it fails, it fails spectacularly. And it generally fails in one of three ways: 1. During any period of inclement weather lasting more than a day or maybe two, the train is delayed along its elevated portion of track (in Brooklyn, between Canarsie and Myrtle-Wykoff, there are several above-ground stations). This means that during rush hour, the Manhattan-bound train scheduled to come every 4 minutes winds up arriving only every 10-15 minutes. Solution: Fix the fucking tracks. We get a fair amount of rain in winter, so the fact that this train floods anytime it's more than misting outside is unacceptable. Failing that, run the train every 2-3 minutes instead of every 4-6. With the crowding at Lorimer and Bedford, we need it anyway, and the people coming to the city from the last 5 Brooklyn stops deserve the upgrades twice as much since it's the fastest way to get to the east side of the city. Hey Albany, fund the MTA. 2. The Canarsie-bound train winds up terminating at Myrtle-Wykoff, so if you live anywhere past that station, you're SOL. Solution: Run the whole damn route. Failing that, provide better advance notice of the shorter route. People live in places other than North Brooklyn, you know, and guess what? THEY HAVE JOBS they have to get to, ON TIME! Really, Albany, just fund the damn MTA. You know most of the state's tax money comes from us. Why do you not want us to get to work? Don't you want your money for pet pork projects? Well, where do you think THAT comes from?!? 3. Because of either Issue #1 or general signal/delay/bunching and gapping issues, the train is so packed by the time it hits Grand St. in Brooklyn that you wind up getting a bunch of people shoving their way on. If you are trying to ride to your office without killing someone, you'll probably be riding alongside a high percentage of NYU students who are VERY pissed about taking classes that start before noon. A small but obvious minority of the students express this anger by taking up multiple seats, plus whatever's required for their backpacks, which they will not remove and lower under any circumstances. Solution: See above. In other words... * Fund the MTA. * Fund the MTA. * Parents, teach your kids some manners. Newbies, read the signs. They funded the signs. For you! To learn how to take your backpack OFF. * Fund the MTA. * Goddammit, Albany, fund our trains already! And Washington, that goes for you too. I know we're not like Real America, Fuck Yeah! or anything over here, and I'm sure a fair number of Trump voters run an internal monologue identical to John Rocker's every time they see a subway car, but come on. We're overcrowded, overstressed, and pumping out immense amounts of tax money to send to the people who take a dollar and 25 cents for every buck we spend while they have the nerve to call US "moochers." A transit system that can legitimately be considered "world class" isn't a lot to ask, even if it isn't providing incentive for the umpteenth oil war in the Middle East. read more

I'll just try to add something that hasn't already been said, which is that New Yorkers just don't understand how to board a train that's even the weeniest bit crowded. Hey idiots, there's actually plenty of room, if you don't decide to walk in one step and then just stop in front of the door. How many times have you been wedged near the door of the L train, a potential target for pickpockets or freaky perverts, when there's enough room to play shuffleboard just a few feet away? Get it together, NY. It's just one more reason (as if you needed one) that Tokyo is superior in every way to this filthy city. P.S. The signs that announce the purported amount of time until the train arrives are nice (and frequently completely wrong, btw), but the fact that they only exist on the L and maybe one or two other lines just serves to underscore -- and then circle in red Sharpie -- how backward the MTA is compared to mass transit systems in other cities/countries. Even Madrid's got a more reliable metro, and they sell pig heads in plastic bags in most delis there. read more

This train used to be called the LL, or "Lousy Local." (Before you were born, kiddies!) It still lives up to its name, but since they've spent entire weekends (over and over) testing the signals, they seem to have dispensed with all human personnel and have decided to leave it to a fully-automated run. I'm not scared... The stations on the Brooklyn part of this line are very cool, old-school, and well-kept, for the most part--except the trashy Bedford Avenue station, which I love. (Hipsters be damned!) I take this train an awful lot as a connecting train, particularly from 1st Avenue to 8th--don't call me lazy! read more

The L train is my lifeline - it's the most convenient route for me (and many others) into Manhattan. The cars are cleaner than most other lines and the air conditioning almost always works. The train is pretty packed in the morning, but once in a while I'm lucky enough to snag a seat. The only time I hate the L is when they have track maintainence and the entire line (or half the line) is shut down, but that happens on every line. I am torn between 1 star and 5 stars, because on a good day, everything goes fine, but on a bad day, ugh, go figure, so there we have it, 3 stars (well cant do 2.5 anyway) I believe the high ups in MTA decided to use L train as the test line because it gets all the latest gadgets! Automatic Voice announcer, estimate time of arrival, uhm, shiny new trains (well a while back), fancy displays in the cars, what else did i miss? I've been taking this train for years and I gotta say, it's not all that bad. It connects to a lot of other trains and can get you from Canarsie, which is in the middle of no where, to Manhattan in less than an hour. The train is usually reliable, running every 10 minutes (or less) most of the day. On weekends, eh. 9 times out of 10, the L train won't be running on weekends or if it is, it's running every 30 minutes between Rockaway Parkway and Broadway Junction. Lately, it's also been making Myrtle Ave be the last stop on every other train on the Canarsie bound track. When it's running, it's running well. When it's not running, expect hell. Are there hipsters? Yes. Are there some questionable people sometimes? Sure. But I've taken this train at all hours of the night and early morning and I've never had any issues...besides when the preachers come on the train. read more

The L train seems to be the main conduit between Williamsburg and Union Square. I transfer from the G at Metropolitan/Lorimer, so I usually find a seat before the Bedford Ave. influx of commuters. The L trains are clean and free of character, something that I actually find refreshing in a city where everything has to "mean" something. It's just a train, a vanilla, plain train. Hipsters don't exist. People like to sow wild oats, try new things and run from what ails them. So what if the guy next to you has a yellow belt? Trains are on time, usually, but after midnight the times vary wildly. If you miss the train, you could be waiting a while. This is especially true for the 3rd and 1st avenue Brooklyn bound stops. Beware! The 3rd avenue turnstile is a metrocard swipe stealer. I swiped a 4 dollar metrocard and it said "insufficient fare". Balderdash. I guess it's fine. Good, even. Yay, go L. read more

It has its excellent days but when the L isn't working you end up stranded in the middle of East New York, Bushwick, Williamsburg, with TOOOONNNNSSSS of people trying to get home. Only thing I can't deal with is the pompous hipsters, their death stares, and the extremely crowded rush hour...however I can say there is never a dull moment. I always walk away laughing, crying (was robbed once), or utterly confused. Gotta love BK! lol... read more

The L train. The weirdest crowd. I try to avoid it on the weekends and late nights. On the weekends is way to crowded. Late nights countdown time is sometimes messed up. It would say for example that the next train is coming in 5 minutes and it would countdown to 0, but the train wouldn't show up. And after few minutes it would show that the next train is coming in 15 minutes. So annoying! Sometimes I skip the L train and just walk (2-3 stops). read more

After living off the G train, the L is like heaven. Yeah, it's populated with hipsters, but you knew that when you moved off a train that runs through the heart of Williamsburg and its poser twin East Williamsburg. I don't enjoy the mad dash to fight for seats at 6th Ave or U. Square that always happens from 9:00-11:00 PM every night, but at least its not a sardine can situation like the 4/5 trains. Best of all, the L train comes with a handy-dandy announcement/scoreboard system that TELLS YOU when the train is coming. As one of the most impatient people in the universe, this makes me incredibly happy. I know how much time I have to get down the stairs. I know how long I will be sitting at the stop. Even better, my stop has an awesome computer screen that shows you all the little trains, so I can see where someone at the switchboard screwed up and almost cause a train collision. True story. Compared to waiting for a train that never comes (the G) or a train where you will be smushed against strangers even at 3 PM (the 4/5), the L is a reliable relief.
