In all honesty I was expecting a little bit of a 'wicker man' vibe but the pub is populated by friendly locals and staff who are more than happy to bring you into the fold. There's a decent selection of beers and ciders including some local Sharps beers and the ever deadly Cornish Rattler cider! All the food is prepared by Pat (the landlady) who supplements a fairly extensive menu with 5 or 6 specials that change pretty frequently - everything from freshly caught fish to roast pheasant is on offer. On a Wednesday the fish and chip van rolls into this lovely little hamlet and you can place your orders at the pub and enjoy a couple of pints before either taking your dinner home or eating it there! There wasn't any music on when we were there but there was plenty of signs up advertising entertainment to keep you occupied in this sleepy little place. He's brought a new team of chefs in with him, so I'm told. Those chefs certainly seem to be earning their money as they turned out excellent gastro pub style food. Not quite fine dining but not far off. Looking at the menu I could have chosen any of the starters or mains. I went for the goats cheese "mousse" for starters and fish from the specials board for mains. The portion of goats cheese I had was very generous (some places only give you a small amount because of cost I guess) although I felt it was a bit heavy to be a mousse. It was really nice all the same. The fish was perfectly cooked and the pommes anna was a perfect accompaniment. The pub's decor probably didn't quite match the quality of the food and I think some people will be surprised how good the food it. The was a really good range on the menu from unusual items (I'd never had samphire before) to regular items such as burgers and fish and chips. It's not too pricey, so well worth a trip if you're in Somerset. As for Sunday, it was refreshing to see a pub that actually knows what a decent Sunday lunch is. It had non-standard veg going on, like beetroot and spinach. The potatoes weren't greasy and old like we're all used to in pubs. The yorkies were awesome too. I'll go again for sure.

The service at the bar was desperately slow, even though there was hardly a soul in there and the barmaid didn't tell us where to find menus even though it was clear we were searching for them. There's just one toilet shared between male and female and it wasn't the cleanest. I ordered a burger, and my partner a 6oz Rump steak. An eye watering £24 between us and that didn't include drinks. The food was nice enough but not worth the money. Sorry, but we won't be back to this one guys!

This change has brought a breath of fresh air, the welcome is again warm and friendly, the food exceptional, gone is that massive menu of countless items which were only possible with the help of a freezer and microwave, never a good combination! Now the menu is manageable and cooked to order by a more than competent chef, for the first time in a long while we see a pass with heat lamps to keep the food hot a sign of a chef who cares about his creations enough to serve them hot and fresh, he does not disappoint either it really is exceptional food, hot, fresh and well presented but more to the point it tastes amazing. The price, we'll give it a try and you decide, we think it offers fantastic value for money and is run by a team of caring professionals so it is back on our hit list "must do" places our only worry is that too many will agree and we won't just drop in but have to book. This is possibly the oldest inn in England, dating from 1028, however it started as a hostel to house the masons who were building the church next door. The menu is excellent and the food has never let us down. The menu is suplemented by an enormous daily specials board with the accent on fish and game. There is a good choice of real ales and some of the other fizzy stuff for people who have lost their sense of taste. The wine list is extensive and contains some really good, reasonably-priced stuff. As can be imagined in view of the age of the building, the inn has a great traditional feel. The latest landlord is a clone of his predecessors in that his welcome is warm and his patience long well Judi always changes her mind at the last minute! So on your next visit to Devon, set your satnav to this lovely old inn. It's popular, though, so I would recommend that you book.
