Using the bus is an amazing and cost-effective way to get around Kauai. The maps are easy to figure out and all the drivers I had were friendly. My advice, don't have a strict schedule that is based around the bus times because the bus runs on its own schedule, not what is posted. Always follow where the bus is, especially on the weekends, because having to wait another 1-2 hours for the next bus is not ideal. Not much seating, but there was never not enough seats. Thank you ! We didn't get a car this trip and we took the bus, or should I say buses everywhere . As a Sr our fare was $2.5 round trip each. A far cry from the $130 a day + gas fee for a car. But that's just the monetary benefit. The real benefits beyond environmental or adding to the congested roads was meeting people. We talked to such wonderful representatives of the island, found new places and saw a different side of life beyond the hotel on Kauai. The drivers were kind and helpful. The passengers engaging and on one occasion a young man gave up his seat for me to sit down on a full bus. (Note that was the only time we had any problem getting a seat on the bus too! ) So I would highly recommend the bus, Am a fan and will continue to be a rider when ever we are on Island. Friendly drivers and relatively cheap fares made my car-less trip on Kauai a breeze to manage. Took off one star for the ridiculous weekend schedule of running every 2 hours. The buses are more like extended vans, so the seating capacity is small. Considering the local population numbers though, it seemed always to be just enough. read more

There is no point in even having a schedule posted. You'll be waiting 30 mins past departure each time. You might as well get to the stop whenever you want and just hope one shows up. And they only tale quarters and if you only have a dollar or more you pay that but then you have to pay again to back. Quite sure a lot of that extra money is pocketed, no way they aren't. Island time is big here for sure. read more

Got stranded in North shore on a Sunday PM. As I was thinking over my situation as I live in Kekaha a bus pulls up. The driver was very helpful and I boarded unknown of the route or even the price as I had never taken the bus before. To add to the confusion I'm 76 and not able to call for help from home because the Mrs didn't have her phone on or probably didn't even know where it was :) Any way with the help of both pleasant and professional drivers I made it home OK and now we will look for the missing phone. read more

Tried twice. First time was fine. 2nd time I waited, and no bus arrived at the scheduled time. Waited for the next scheduled bus and the driver passed me by. Found out that the "bus only" lane that I waiting at wasn't a bus stop. The map was too vague to understand the exact location of the stop, which couldn't be seen from the road. I was at a part of the named location, but not at the exact spot without knowing until the bus came and passed. I didn't have enough time to get to the right stop and had to walk the 3 miles to get home. UPDATE: This is an update from previous review. There is now a mapping system, which makes getting around and understanding the bus stop locations much more user friendly. In general, riders are quiet, polite, and clean. My only complaint is from an incident where I was waiting in the rain for an hour, thinking the bus was 50 minutes late. It wasn't. A coworker witnessed my bus, 10 minutes after I had gotten to the stop, taking a shortcut and bypassing my stop because of heavy traffic. It was a reportable incident, and I know regular riders who've had to report drivers arriving/leaving stops early, and other things to make riding the bus difficult. With reporting incidents, though, it seems Service is improving. read more

I don't like the customer service at the Kauai bus when I call to ask a question some of them are rude! (One Star) The drivers are nice and the bus passes are cheap I am thankful for that. read more

Visiting from San Francisco, and was told by the locals that the Kauai Bus Shuttle was 50 cents a ride, so we gave it a shot. Got a neighborhood tour while on the 70 and got the lowdown on all the local spots to check out. Next day we took the 400 out to the NE part of the island for $2! Drivers were super nice (unless you forgot to pay first) and helpful. They always asked the tourists and non regulars where they were going and told them which stops would be closest to their destination. Just remember to study the routes and have an idea of where you want to go. Stops are named after landmarks. Highly recommend! read more

The Kauai Bus is Kauai County Hawaii's public transport system. It runs to most areas of the island hourly until 9-10. On weekends and holidays most routes are every two hours and end around 4-5 pm. Basic fare is $2.00 no transfers. Shorter lines off the main routes are 50 cents. read more

This is the best kept secret of the island. If you are staying on the main thorough fairs of the island and don't mind walking and waiting at times, this is a very inexpensive way to get around the island. The buses are clean. Routes are posted on the website. There is a route going from the Lihue airport now, except you can only take carry on luggage on the bus. No large peices are allowed. Adult fare is $2 and youth fare is $1. I went from Lihue to Princeville, and Princeville to Hanelei bay with minimal problems and it was a great way to see the island! read more

I'll give it 2 stars because sometimes the bus is very helpful, and friendly. First off the bus driver told me very angrily that I have to keep my knives at the front of the bus, although I'm a Chef at Lava Lava Beach Club, and still had my uniform on. I can understand that though, safety first, right? The thing that made me really angry was when we were within 10 feet of the stop I was to get off at, she got really angry with me, and said "You need to sit down until the bus stops!" I can even understand someone losing all professionality over someone standing up while the bus is moving (let I remind you that I'm in my twenties and was in no danger of injury from a bus moving at 20 miles an hour max) the thing that really bugged me was I've seen that exact bus driver let obvious locals stand up, and do whatever while the bus was moving, but because I just happen to have white skin, and live here, she can treat me however way she pleases. I work restaurant, and I understand the fact that people will write Bad reviews over anything, but the fact that this bus driver disrespected me is entirely based upon the fact that my skin is white. Even when I was living on the mainland I've never tolerated racism even though originally the hate was not based upon my own race, and just because I've moved to a state where the white man is the minority, I will not tolerate racism. Still got a lot of love for Kauai, all I ask is get to know a person before you decide to blindly hate someone solely because the tone of one's skin. Mahalo, and Aloha. read more
