Salty Disappointment Normally wedding cakes are sweet, but my own experience with Jenny Layne Bakery (JLB) for my wedding cake was salty. It started out well enough; Jenny is kind and cares about her work (we met her at an open house event). I chose her because of her accolades, her beautiful cakes on Instagram, the fact that my MOH enjoyed working with her, and because she was my venue's preferred baker. All good things, right? So I thought. My now-husband, parents, and I tasted boxed up cupcakes instead of an in person cake tasting post-Covid. I wasn't impressed by most of the cupcake flavors, but it was too late since we'd already booked with JLB, and I thought, "At least the final cake will be beautiful." After I researched wedding cakes, Jenny and I personally worked on the wedding cake design together. I was excited with what we came up with! A lovely white cake with royal blue ribbon, an edible "C" crest for my new last name, and some classy pearl necklaces wrapped around two tiers to match the one I'd wear that day. Come wedding day, I saw the wedding cake for the first time at the reception and was surprised to learn that there wasn't one but two things wrong with the cake. First, the "C" crest was missing. Second, the pearl necklaces had slid off the rims of the tiers in several places, so they were more pearl "L" shaped (see pictures below). After my honeymoon, I reached out to JLB and nicely asked what happened, sending pictures of the cake design vs. the final reception result. Jenny herself let me know that it was "a sad cake" and asked how she could make it up to me as she understood she couldn't redo my wedding cake. She also explained that the delivery person dropped the edible crest, which she forgot to tell me earlier, and it seemed the pearls had melted in the sun. Apparently 72 degrees is too hot for a professional four tier wedding cake, but not a one tier groom's cake my mother's friend made that had traveled over 250 miles in a car without an issue. Thus, I asked for a refund. A few days later, Jenny's assistant let me know they could not give a refund because "Walters does not offer refunds and because we do not handle the financials as it pertains to the wedding packages." Aka because I went with the Walters Weddings vendor package and preferred bakery, the bakery can't do a refund directly, as we paid the Walters Wedding venue for the cake. Therefore, Walters would need to refund the bakery for the cake (or something like that). JLB could offer a new anniversary tier or $50 in store credit to be used by the end of the year. Mind you, JLB did not bother to reach out about the "C" crest being damaged even though they knew it was upon arrival. The venue placed the cake where they normally do as this bakery and venue have worked together countless times with Jenny Layne Bakery listed as its preferred vendor. I reached out to the venue's GM and told her the story. She said she'd see what she could do. Nearly three weeks later, I followed up with the venue GM again. Then Jenny reached out and offered the same $50, but now as a refund, store credit, or an anniversary tier. We opted for the $50 refund, a salty disappointment to what I was expecting to be a sweet and beautiful wedding cake. If you've made it to the end of this review, please know Jenny Layne Bakery doesn't come recommended from me because they made not one but two mistakes, and because of the lackluster consolidation offered. I chose this bakery primarily for the aesthetics - and that's where they fell short *twice* with my wedding cake. So I'm coming home with $50 to make up for this "sad cake." Brides to be, something will go wrong on your wedding day. But ensure your vendors care enough about you as a customer to try to right their wrongs, as I experienced with my hair stylist, but not with my bakery. read more

When looking for a wedding cake baker, price wasn't my main concern, taste was. Everyone knows that wedding cake has a bad reputation for being dry / tasteless and that was my biggest fear - having bad cake. I was adamant that I didn't want to spend $500+ on a cake that would end up in the garbage - I want people to like it! Due to the fantastic reviews on Wedding Wire, I booked a tasting for May 2016 - which is $15. If you end up booking a cake here, that $15 is credited toward your order. I was very pleased with the responsiveness and general politeness of the staff in the emails about booking a tasting and various cake ideas. I also spent quite a bit of time browsing through their portfolio on social media prior to my visit - their cakes are gorgeous. Unfortunately, this place is really difficult to find via GPS as the shopping center is a bit of a maze. I wanted to try them before the tasting due to people on other sites saying in general, sometimes wedding bakers sample cake that tastes better than what they deliver on the actual day of. Once inside I noticed that this place really is geared more toward custom cake orders than it is for buying desserts while you're out and about. There were only a few items for purchase, one being a strawberry cupcake with vanilla icing. I asked the cashier what her favorite item was. She was totally polite and gushed about how great the chocolate chip cookies were, which I also bought. The total came out to about $4 for the cupcake and a cookie. As some background, I've worked in bakeries and I've made wedding cake. I also loathe canned white frosting. Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines - I know what it tastes like and I've hated it since I was a child. Every year, my dad wants brownies with canned white frosting on it for his birthday, so I'm very aware of what this stuff smells and tastes like. I was excited about this strawberry cupcake - it looked great. I opened the container to smell it. I knew that smell. That was canned icing. AGHHHHHHHH! I don't care if someone swears on their life and bets the farm that this is homemade buttercream, it isn't, it's canned, I know my frosting. I tasted it. I was correct. What made me upset was that not only was the frosting canned, the cake was for sure the same as the boxed strawberry cake mix you can get on any grocery store shelf. I had Brian try it, and while he doesn't have the same palate that I do, he said it tasted like nothing. I was so disappointed. Now onto the cookie, it didn't look right. It was thick, very crumbly and had no buttery taste. I'm going to deduce that this is from too much flour, using shortening instead of butter and possibly too much baking soda. Within one bite, I knew that this wasn't the bakery that I would go with for our wedding. We cancelled our tasting appointment and ended up booking with Frosted Art. I had high hopes, and the staff was so gracious and polite which made me all the more disappointed that I had to cancel. In the end, taste is imperative and boxed mixes don't cut it. read more

We ordered a couple of "test" cupcakes well before my son's birthday (movie themed) to see if they could pull this off. They failed miserably. We had ordered two cupcakes made to look like popcorn or a bucket full of popcorn to fit in with the movie theme. Look on Pinterest and you'll find 100s of examples. While not an easy request for sure, something that the person taking the order said would be no problem. Now look at the picture... Clearly, the cupcake does not look like popcorn. It looks like a bunch of marshmallows randomly painted with yellow airbrushing. Notice the front, our order asked for his name to be on the front. My son loves movies, but we in fact did not name him POPCORN! Unfortunately, we had prepaid for these, so my wife wanted some sort of compensation, since they clearly weren't up to the task, plus, the can't even follow their own instructions. The guy at the counter said there wasn't anything that they could do. Really? You can't give some of my money back and have an ounce of decent customer service? Who do they think they are? I picked up a one tier cake for a gender reveal last weekend. Design: I requested it to be one half blue and one half purple with a white question mark on top. I wouldn't have had an issue, unless the blue icing was actually mixed well without marbling throughout. The purple side was vivid but the blue looked as if it wasn't mixed well and appeared rushed. Thankfully, this was not the centerpiece of the reveal... had it would have been, I would have been mortified. Taste: For a basic vanilla cake, I was disappointed in the dryness and after slicing a few pieces, it completely fell apart. Price: Overall, I feel it was too pricey for such a basic elementary designed cake. I was sold by looking at previous designs on their Facebook page, but it looks as if they gave this simple design to an apprentice to practice their cake skills. I had high hopes for my wedding cake. A Jenny Layne wedding cake came with my package (elite package at the Olana wedding venue). I was told they were the best and my cake would be incredible.....I was told what I wanted was "easy" and would be "no problem". Well, on my wedding day, my cake arrived looking nothing like what I asked for. It wasn't even the right color. It was supposed to be off white and white only...with real flowers placed on top. The picture on the left is the cake I asked for, the picture on the right is the cake I got. A GRAY wedding cake on the most important, special day of my life. Gray! I could not have been more embarrassed. Completely ridiculous. Jenny Layne apologized and agreed it was not what I asked for. She then offered a gift certificate for me and my husband to go to dinner to make up for it....she told me she wanted to do something nice to "make up for it"...then to my surprise, I'm told by the Olana where we got married that Jenny Layne told them not to refund me for the wedding cake because she had "already taken care of it". I'm sorry....but a gift certificate to dinner should never take the place of a refund when a refund is owed. And Jenny Layne should have said that instead of saying she just wanted to do something nice for us.This whole thing has been a complete nightmare. So be careful! Jenny did an incredible job on the design and the cake tasted fabulous. A few months later I ordered cupcakes for a wedding shower. She made a variety of cupcakes that all tasted so wonderful. Wow! Was not looking to be this impressed considering all the mainstream custom bakeries popping up but yelp did not steer me wrong. Had a sweet tooth and found this eclectic shop with exquisite treats. Order several items including chocolate chip cookies, chocolate dipped bacon and a variety of cupcakes & cake pops. You can tell the homemade goodness in each one. The cookie was so rich, with a lightly crisp outer side and tenderly baked center and plenty of chocolate chips throughout. Very impressed with the wedding-cake cake pop. So many flavors in one bite! If you are in the area it's a must try. Jenny Layne is the best in the Dallas area. She was SO much fun to work with and she was excited to try anything new! She was the only place I could find that would make a pumpkin and cream cheese wedding cake for us! She even had a special sample made for us to try when we came to the tasting. The cake was super moist even over a week after the wedding! Great little bakery if you are looking for something "pretty" as opposed to taste. The red velvet and brown chocolate cupcakes I got were good but not great. They looked absolutely beautiful though! First of all, the cupcakes LOOK great. I wish I could say the same for how they taste. However, they unfortunately taste similar to something out of a box. The cake and icing remind me of Duncan Hines and/or Betty Crocker. I'm admittedly a cupcake snob. If I'm going to indulge in a cupcake, it should be worth the calories. If you're looking for a cupcake made completely from scratch and worth every penny and calorie, I would recommend The Flour Shop in Highland Village. If you're primarily interested in how "pretty" a cupcake/cake is, this is the place for you. They do not disappoint when it comes to presentation. I haven't actually ordered anything from Jenny Layne but I wanted to post on the character of some of their employees. I've been fortunate to meet Kinsey and Antonio, some regulars at my place of work and they and the rest of their group are all very cheerful, kind and generous people. We have been blessed to receive some treat packs on holidays including cookies, cupcakes, and some misc. treats, and everything is always very well prepared and delicious. Everyone loves them and it brightens their day to know someone has gone out of their way to treat them. If I ever need any cookies or cupcakes I'm sure to have them at the top of my list and from the personalities of their employees, I'm sure if you were their customer they would treat with just as much respect and jolly service. read more

We used this bakery for our wedding and it was a great experience. I came in and did a tasting with cupcakes. It was well organized. They gave us 5 or 6 flavors to try and 3 fillings. I ordered a 3 tier cake and a 2 tier groom's cake. The designs on the cakes were just what I wanted. The cakes were so good, people asked who did it at the reception. I loved the Italian creme cake. And the price was very reasonable. I also tried the pumpkin whoopie pies when I stopped off with the ribbon and they were to die for! I am glad they are 20 miles away from me so I would have to go way out of my way for them, they are so good I'd be tempted all the time. read more

Jenny provided our wedding cake and our grooms cake. They were both delicious. We really enjoyed the tasting we went to with Jenny. Her pricing was reasonable. She gave us lots of options and she was so sweet. She made it really fun. She also has a few cake stands available for use if you need one. We did a tuxedo cake of vanilla and strawberry with butter cream icing and a strawberry whipped filling. It was delicious. The grooms cake was a double doozie cookie cake. Since my husband is in construction she was able to make a bull dozer out of rice crispy treat to put on top of it and it was really cool!
