The food and the drinks are really good, I love all of their products, the customer service is horrible.

I would have given this establishment a 5-star review, if it weren't for that gentleman Dominique/Devonte on my receipt. He is my upstairs neighbor, whom we have been experiencing issues with for nearly a year now. I would never base my rating off of personal issues however- as that is petty and inaccurate. Unfortunately, he brought our issues into the workplace- and purposefully undercooked/tampered with our food. We will be requesting security footage & pursuing this case, as I was sick for the rest of the day after only eating a couple bites of my breakfast sandwich. I usually wouldn't pitch a fit, as I understand having a "bad day." However, I could have been seriously injured/poisoned; and do not feel safe knowing that workers like this exist in our food industry. It is terrifying. I knew from the first moment that something was "off" with the sandwich, as it tasted incredibly raw, and the ends were awfully "bubbly" and seemingly disturbed. I would recommend quite literally any other Java house besides this one until the issue is resolved, as you never know who he doesn't get along with. read more

The Java House is a coffee shop nestled in Iowa City. They roast their own coffee beans and they serve their drip coffee as pour overs. It's a pretty cool concept. However the only downside with their pour overs, a barista is refilling a kettle pot from a big container of hot water. Plenty of seating for people to meet up with friends or to study. read more

Came by here early in the morning right at opening to get some work done before the day started. I decided I would treat myself to a nice coffee and breakfast while I was here. Parking: This Java House is in a small shopping center, so there was ample parking. Ambiance: I liked the ambiance of the place. Lots of wood, so it felt natural. There was ample lighting and plenty of seating with outlets for me to get some work done. There are signs that say 1 hour seating, but it was not busy that early and they did not enforce it at the time. I am not sure if they would enforce it if it ever got that busy. Food and drink: For coffee, I got the Mexican Chocolate Cold Brew with Sweet Cream. For food, I got the Spicy Southwest with chorizo and substituted the English muffin for croissant, which they were more than happy to do. Both came out in a timely manner. The Mexican Chocolate Cold Brew was delicious and refreshing, but it does have a spiced kick to it for those who are not into that. The Spicy Southwest was not too spicy though, so feel free to order it if it piques your interest. It was still warm, had a delicious sauce to it, and I had to consciously tell myself to eat it slowly or I would have scarfed it down otherwise. Service: Incredibly friendly staff. Made small talk with one of the baristas about the gaggle of geese that were right outside the window. A hundred percent would come back! I am craving the Spicy Southwest as I write this! read more

Placed an order for pickup: two cookies, a chicken caprese panini, and an iced chai latte. I had ordered the sandwich with modifications, which unfortunately were not followed. The chai latte was delicious but didn't taste homemade, but that's ok! I wasn't looking for homemade. The cookies were the best part. The chocolate chip cookie had GIANT chocolate wafers in it. I am very disappointed to find that Java House, at least the one on Mormon Trek, doesn't allow emotional support animals in their establishment. I am unable to rate anything else because I was unable to go and spend time with my relatives, since I wouldn't have the support that I need to go out in public. Java House has always seemed like a very progressive business. It surprised me that there is any misunderstanding there about emotional support animals and how critical they are. I hope Java House will reconsider this policy, as I took my last emotional support dog every time I was there, along with all of the other people that brought their dogs. The Java House in a nutshell: -easy parking (free lot in front of building) -several major newspapers available for patron's to borrow as they wish (as a newspaper junkie this fills my heart) -extensive coffee and tea menu - I opted for the Espresso Macchiato and enjoyed it throughly. My fingers are typing at lightning speed as we speak! -very large space with an estimated 25+ tables and occupancy of 100-120 (great tables and counters for meetings and larger groups) -Hairloom Salad Company is in the same space which allows patrons to build their own salads, grab a sandwich and soup along with their coffee drinks (perfect spot for meetings all hours of the day) -Why not the fifth star? The signs hung throughout the space asking visitors to only stay for one hour puts off a bad vibe. Maybe they should be worded in a way that says, "hey, if we're super busy and folks need a table - can you hit the road?" If I keep buying and having meetings, am I not earning my keep? ;) read more

I've been coming to this location since I was a very young kid, so I make a point to stop in every time I'm back in town. The past few times the service has been extremely slow and confusing. I 200% understand everywhere is short staffed with what's going on. However, this morning, they had 5-6 people on, 2 people at every "station," and it just still seemed very disorganized/took a while yet again. They put your food orders out on one side of the restaurant, and the drinks at the other side, so you have to be on high alert to hear when both parts of your order are up. The woman who set my sandwich on the counter when it was done made direct eye contact with me, set it down, and slowly walked away? It was very strange. I didn't know if it was mine, since she never called out the name/item like everyone else's order? As for the food and drink, it's nothing to write home about, but it's a decent option if you're nearby and need a quick bite. They have all day breakfast sandwiches with lots of bread options/variations. I got the caprese, and it wasn't bad, but honestly didn't have a ton of flavor even with the pesto on it. I got a lavender lemonade this morning, and it was overly sweet. It might have had too much syrup for my liking, perhaps my fault for adding a flavor. Overall, this place has too much of a nostalgia (and convenience) factor for me to stop coming. I just hope they regain some of the ambience and experience that this location used to have before they added Heirloom and did the remodel. read more

I have been here multiple times and: - service is slow....always - Many of the seating options are high bar stools, and often a "party of one" is taking up a four top table, and sitting there for hours...so never sure if will have comfortable option to sit - speaking of food.....average fare - today when there-they had "table "stations so you could clean your own table....kinda sad and then -no hand gel on same "table station" to clean your hands after getting "dirty" cleaning your own table ( or you can also use the rest room)...just not what I want to do when going out. My first 1 star review on Yelp! And believe or not, to a place I frequent at least one a week. Here's what went down. Came in at a very slow time (7:30) for some dinner. Ordered, and sat down to wait. Ten minutes later and we're getting antsy. There have been like two orders other than ours, what's the hold up? Thirty minutes later... for two salads and two sandwiches.. and we're still food-less. The young man with glasses preparing our order kept dropping pans and seemed, well, high. He would disappear in the back for 4-5 minutes, come back out, and then go back. When we received our food, he mumbled a "sorry". "What was the holdup?" we asked. "Oh just a big rush, you know?" Wow this cafe has undergone a major metamorphosis! A space that used to feel like Crazy Aunt Paula's stale living room, is now hip and modern with loads of character. It's the perfect balance between Java House's nostalgic cozy vibes and a hipster cafe. Plus, they've added an Heirloom Salad Company to this location, so just like the original Java House in Downtown Iowa City, we have the best of both worlds under one roof. What makes this even better than the downtown location though, is that their huge horseshoe counter in the middle of the cafe space allowed me to order and pay for my Heirloom salad and Java House iced tea from the same counter, at the same time. A much more seamless experience as compared to the Downtown location! Now I can get my morning cup of zen, lunch, and afternoon energy boost all at the same place. Thanks Java House, for giving me every element of sustenance I need for a day of productivity... and for enabling me to be a cafe hermit. PS. a few details of note: -bike parking is around the side of the building, behind the patio -there is a patio with great chairs and tables, but no umbrellas or plantings so it's not the most inviting. Great spot for some excellent brew! An Iowa City establishment, this Java house is a bit more cozy than the one downtown, but just as good. Coffee is made while you wait and is definitely worth the time if it's busy. Good selection from drip to froofy and everything in between. My wife digs the HoCho (Hot Chocolate...yes shortened) and with good reason. Lots of area to spread out to study, sit with a book and listen to music or just catch up with friends. The outdoor seating area is nice of spring and summer days - 3-4 tables with a few chairs each are located out there. Essentials like free internet and newspapers are present so there's no excuse to be there and be out of the loop. Great place to stop in and get some of the brew ranging from dessert flavors to engine oil black and everything in between! read more

Java House has a pleasantly energetic atmosphere perfect both for chatting with friends or for cracking down on some homework. They have a huge menu with lots more options than a larger chain coffee place, but it's just as pricey ($5 mochas/lattes). I really love their Java Coolers. They are very refreshing and creamy, but not too sweet. Their mochas and oolongs teas are also a solid choice. I tried my first ever (and probably last) pumpkin spice latte here also, and would not recommend; I instantly got a sugar headache! That might be par for the course with that drink though. Since its such a great place to study, it is often super hard to find a table on weekends, so be prepared for that at popular times! Parking is never an issue though which is a perk. read more

This place is tied together with heirloom and the both suck. Service is shit and every single time I go there they fuck up my order. This morning I order 2 coffees, a breakfast sandwich, and a croissant. They didn't give me the croissant and they almost didn't give me one of my coffees. I used to love this place but recently it's been horrible. The staff is unenthusiastic and uninterested. I feel like I'm intruding on their conversations when I order. Last time our orders were all mixed up-sandwiches came out with two potatoes on one and both meats and both eggs on the other. We were missing a cup of soup and it took at least 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge me to even ask about it. This place is run like nobody really cares and is an absolute dumpster fire. I've been coming to to Java House 2-3x a week for the last few months. The service has always been meh, but I'll deal with it because I live close and the food is really good (though expensive). But it's never improved! My order comes out wrong 75% of the time. I order the same thing and ask for an ingredient to be left out, I get home and it's in there. They'll bring out 1/2 my order and leave the other half on the counter while checking out a line of new people. They have terrible cashier skills. This has been a real conversation I've had with the cashier multiple times... Me: I'd like a mocha Employee: for here or go to? Me: to go Employee: and what's the name? Me: Alyssa Employee: that will be such and such price Me: can I also get a black coffee? Employee: oh okay, for here or to go? Me: to go Employee: and what's your name? Me: .. Really digging the atmosphere of this place since they remodeled. More seating than before and tons of outlets everywhere! I would say this makes it a great study spot... if you don't need internet. I go to the Java downtown and the one on 1st Ave quite often and both of those locations have great wifi. However, I was here for about 4 hours on a fairly empty day and at least half of that time I could not connect to the internet at all. At first I thought it was just my computer, but my friend was having issues with it as well. Another minor complaint: I feel like a lot of the workers here are pretty new (and there is still a now hiring sign on the door) and operations aren't as smooth here compared to before. I watched 3 incorrect orders go out in a row, including mine. Of course the staff was happy to fix this! Overall, I'd still recommend going to this Java if you're in need of a study spot not in the downtown area. Fantastic Coffee Shop in Iowa City! I love the pour over coffee, with so many different beans to choose from! (This sometimes becomes a problem if your in a hurry) But good things come to those who wait! The layout if large and spread out full of people having meetings and students studying! They have news papers for you to read and comfy couches for socializing or relaxing! They also have great baked goods, clean bathroom and this is the home of IOWA PUBLIC RADIO's Java House Live! Which brings in local, regional, and national talent to the Java House stage and is recorded for Iowa Public Radio. I was lucking enough to record one of these, it never aired but I had fun doing it and we got free coffee! I usually stop in here when I'm in Iowa City! And I'm never disappointed when I do! Don't expect to get your food on time if you are ordering using the app- I have consistently had to wait 10-15 minutes past the "pickup time", even when it was slow.. and my order is often incorrect as well. The older staff are fantastic, but some of the younger staff don't seem to pay much attention to the orders. When made well, the salads and drinks are very good. I love that they have healthy and non-dairy options- which have me coming back despite errors in orders and the long wait time. I just moved into town for graduate school so I was looking for a local coffee shop! After driving around I stumbled upon the Java House! This place is great. I ordered the 20 ounce Java Cooler and I loved it. This coffee shop is very cozy and comfortable. There is the option to sit at high top tables, large tables, or outside on their patio. There was also a large age range of people that came in while I was here. Across the room from me there was a group of older people reading newspapers, next to me was a college student studying, and behind me was a little girl eating lunch with her mother. This coffee shop may just become one of my new study locations! read more

The staff here do such a nice job of tolerating neighborhood kids who frequent the free water tap and ask for ice. Always see the staff smiling and talking with the kids even though they are not paying customers.They are also very kind to a mentally handicapped woman who comes in Wednesday evenings and is loud and very demanding. I have some issues with Java House (Loud and smells like burned cheese all the time)but I wanted to give them credit for handling Non traditional customers! read more

I'm fairly regular at both this location and the one downtown and I have very rarely experienced holdups with the service. I've been coming to this Java House for years (well, actually more like decades). I love the space and it will probably always be "my" Java House. The St. Louis Blues is probably their best coffee, though I like the American Gothic too. Their other more obscure coffees are okay, but I don't personally care for them. They also do a serious hot apple cider and the chai latte is phenomenal. The food at Heirloom is delicious, and the seating design for the Heirloom side is really well done. During the past year or so, the quality of service has left something to be desired. It's not "bad" but the Heirloom side seems to be working out the kinks and the Java House side seems to have had a lot of staff turn over recently. Basically, it takes some extra time to get in and out. Not ideal for when you only have 5 minutes to fuel up on legal and addictive stimulants. It's enough to make me a little disappointed, but not enough to keep me away! read more

I love the idea of this place. It's like a good version of panera without the corporate feel and bad food food. They have a vast salad menu and a great selection of sandwich's and salads that you can mix and match. The place is really big and has something for everyone. benches for students who want to work on computers, a couple comfy chairs for those who just want to sit and enjoy a coffee and read and of course seating for all the people who want to eat. I went with the thai chicken noodle and a chicken sandwich. both were great. A place like this would crush it in Ann Arbor (a bigger, better version of Iowa City) and i could see this becoming a franchise someday. I would be game (hint to ownership) read more
