This location is very subpar. Java House overall, especially the downtown location, is great. The 1st Ave location is well below the Java House normal standard. The staff acts like it is a bother to take orders and rarely offers a warm welcome or word, and forget about possibly getting a smile. The pastries never seem fresh; it's like Java House sends the leftovers to this location. And the coffee shop itself is not very clean. It is almost like they don't want people to actually sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee. The atmosphere, the people and the product are all three very off putting. read more

I can't say this location is super convenient... unless you live on the East side of IC. That being said, this location is on CHOMP Delivery. BOOM. This is a cool place! I found it on Yelp nearby my grandfather's nursing home. I had a few hours to kill so I walked here and back. Very nice décor and I like that all the coffee is pour-over on demand. You can choose various kinds of coffee and get 'em after a little while. And at Starbucks I'm used to asking for a cup of water since I've walked a long ways, but here they have a carafe of cold water ready to go. That's good for me. They serve up a solid cup of brew here, but as stated elsewhere the atmosphere is just a little lacking as compared to the downtown location. Decent amount of seating and seems to be a good spot to study, though on busy days it can be tough to find a spot to sit. They do drip coffee right, barside and it seems they've got more drip options than other Java locations. Standard, slightly more expensive coffee options ranging from froofy to benign. Pastries are good, but always cost more than you feel they should. Good place to stop if you're in the area. Nothing fancy, but solid brew for your daily fix. read more

I really like this coffeehouse. There's lots of seating and the drinks are delicious. I almost always order the Blueberries & Cream (no whip!) latte and it's just the right amount of bitter and sweet. Some of the coffee drinks I order most places are just so sweet it's almost like drinking dessert! Parking has never been a problem - the lot is pretty big. The only thing I've noticed every time I've been here is you almost feel guilty if you're trying to have a personal conversation with someone...it's that quiet! East side's Java House isn't as glamorous as the original downtown location, and especially not as glamorous as the West side location (on Mormon Trek) now that they've renovated to include both an Heirloom Salad Co. and some fun hipster vibes, but the drink quality is on par with the others. Their outdoor patio is surrounded by a parking lot, but they've still managed to make it inviting with modern tables, chairs, and signature red umbrellas. Inside there are lots of nooks and a variety of seating to choose from - high tops, group tables, couches and... a telephone booth! I'd love to see someone working on their computer from inside the telephone booth, that would make my day! Not sure what to order? The St. Louis Blues is a good roast if you're diggin' a good cup of joe, while the chai lattes are great and I love that they offer both masala (spicy) and traditional (sweet) chai blends. read more

I like this location because it's never as busy as the downtown one. They have sweets and snacks and I really like their loose leaf tea flavors. It's a great place to get some reading done and the WiFi seems to work well in my limited experience. The staff is always very personable and well trained. Whenever we are in Iowa, we make it a point to go here. I like the art on the walls, I like the pastries, they have a large selection to choose from to make a fantastic coffee beverage of choice and have plentiful seating indoors and out. Java House has great coffee. That is why we go to coffee houses, right? Great coffee? Well, fret not, it's here. They have various blends, so light or dark, you'll be good. Best yet, they brew each cup individually using a pour-over method. Think Chemex if you are not sure what pour-over means. That is exactly how I make my coffee at home. Hubs is happy to settle for k-cups, but I like my coffee well made and with excellent flavor. Java House delivers. The atmosphere is quiet, with lots of places to sit, and the music calm. Just the right kind of environment for tucking yourself away to work on your novel, or whatever. The only negative might be a limited food menu, but then, this is a coffee house, not a restaurant. You won't be sorry you decided to hide away here on a cold winter's afternoon. And, you know...winter is coming. read more

Java House is a local coffeehouse in Iowa City. I was there this afternoon to Han out with a friend. Nice place to study, read a book, or meet up with friends. Ordered the tiramisu. It's the best in town. The cacao powder, mascarpone, and the coffee-soaked ladyfingers were all at the right proportion that everything had its distinctive taste but at the same time all complement each other in the mouth. Anyone who knows me knows I run on coffee, and Java House has long been one of my go-to caffeine spots in Iowa City. Though I typically hit up the downtown location since it's close to where I work, I sometimes visit this 1st Avenue location to order a Java Cooler, hunker down, and get some work done on my laptop. It's a little further removed from campus, so there tends to be more seating and less background noise. The staff is kind, friendly, and talented! read more

Their light roast, house coffee(St.Louis Blues) is some of the best coffee I've ever tasted. It's usually the only thing I get when I go there. They do the pour-over/ drip method for the hot coffee, so make sure you have about 5 minutes to spare when you go. On rare occasion I get the iced coffee, which is just as good(same brew), and ready to go the minute you walk in(pre-brewed and refrigerated). Nice atmosphere, clean place, friendly staff(some more so than others). Would get 5 stars if the consistency was better. Sometimes the coffee isn't as good as other times. It seems watered down or something, and occasionally has a funny taste to it. On very rare occasion, you might find an unacceptable amount of grounds in it. Bathroom plumbing could use some help, it smells like a mop bucket in the men's room. Still my favorite place to grab a coffee, though. read more

I normally come here for coffee AT LEAST once or twice a week. I can't remember her name but she has short dyed curly hair, she's great and always provides the best service. I am here today and was helped by someone who usually is not at this location. I heard from other people talking that he is from the west side location. He is very tall with red hair and beard. Anyway, it was busy and I ordered my usual, american gothic, for here and was told I would be under #1. I come back a few times and when I noticed my mug was gone I asked about it. He said it was not mine (even though I know they told me #1 was mine) and none of the other cups were mine either so they forgot to make it. He didn't apologize or anything and just asked what I had. I waited as at least 10 other people receive their drinks before me. I don't like to make a big deal of things but I am a regular here and I expect good service. Normally, I would be offered a free coffee or something but I didn't even get an apology. Really disappointed. read more

There is usually a line when I go for coffee, but the location is well staffed and they complete orders quickly. The croissants are good and there rotating selection of brew of the month is crazy. They also have free singer-songwriter music on weekends. My only small hesitation was that it took a fair amount of time to get my food. But... Java House has an amazing work environment with great food and drinks for great prices. It's my favorite place to go after school because it's just a couple of minutes away. I always enjoy sitting with a snack and working or just watching a show. I say it has a great work environment because I'm always able to go to java with homework that would normally take hours to finish, but at Java, it takes maybe an hour or two at max. Allowing me just to relax at night and not be up working on homework. Part of the reason I love to go to Java is that they have amazing treats and drinks at fairly reasonable prices. Like for example, I can get a good sized monster cookie and a 16oz Tea for around $7. Plus they have a day old section where you can get 1 bag of treats which usually has 2 treats in it for $1 and you can get there day old bars for 50% off. Although I have heard some people say that business can be slow or that it can get loud, which can happen depending on what time it is and how busy they are, but I have never seen it be loud and yes sometimes business can be slow but that's business and to be honest as long as I get good food I don't care. read more

Honestly, this place is one of the rare places I can find authentic coffee drinks in Iowa City and nearby areas. The bartenders always do a professional job. I love their tiramisu cake. Sometimes, I just stopped by to buy a tiramisu without any drink. The atmosphere inside looks nice and comfortable, but the furniture is kind of old and dusty. The cashiers sometimes are unwelcoming, acting as if they knew everything and always were right. And be cautious! Their coffees (except the Lattes and Mochas) are relatively too strong compared to other places, which make you head to the toilet right away. Had a coffee date here with 2 friends yesterday afternoon. We all drank their iced coffee. They offer nice places both inside and out to sip and chat. While the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting the coffee is average. They offer a wide range of coffee drinks and some pastries. My iced coffee was very average and plain. It was well made but lacked depth of flavor and interest in taste. A good place to study or catch up but not to have a coffee experience. read more
