Macchiato and an apricot scone on the patio!
    Rachel L.

East side's Java House isn't as glamorous as the original downtown location, and especially not as glamorous as the West side location (on Mormon Trek) now that they've renovated to include both an Heirloom Salad Co. and some fun hipster vibes, but the drink quality is on par with the others. Their outdoor patio is surrounded by a parking lot, but they've still managed to make it inviting with modern tables, chairs, and signature red umbrellas. Inside there are lots of nooks and a variety of seating to choose from - high tops, group tables, couches and... a telephone booth! I'd love to see someone working on their computer from inside the telephone booth, that would make my day! Not sure what to order? The St. Louis Blues is a good roast if you're diggin' a good cup of joe, while the chai lattes are great and I love that they offer both masala (spicy) and traditional (sweet) chai blends.

I really like this coffeehouse. There's lots of seating and the drinks are delicious. I almost always order the Blueberries & Cream (no whip!) latte and it's just the right amount of bitter and sweet. Some of the coffee drinks I order most places are just so sweet it's almost like drinking dessert! Parking has never been a problem - the lot is pretty big. The only thing I've noticed every time I've been here is you almost feel guilty if you're trying to have a personal conversation with someone...it's that quiet! Not a "chatty" coffeehouse, definitely a "working" coffeehouse. Or maybe my social hour is off compared to the rest of the world's timeframe?

I like this location because it's never as busy as the downtown one. They have sweets and snacks and I really like their loose leaf tea flavors. It's a great place to get some reading done and the WiFi seems to work well in my limited experience. The staff is always very personable and well trained. Try their Cuban macchiato and a muffin!

I like the coffee, it's amazing. The atmosphere is equally so. I think it even might rival or beat out Starbucks (and I'm a Starbucks fangirl :-3) it's super quiet, u can easily find a little hidden spot to call your own and overall perfect for working or just to relax and sip ur latte (breath a bit).

Tiramisu at Java. The best in town!
    Katty L.

Java House is a local coffeehouse in Iowa City. I was there this afternoon to Han out with a friend. Nice place to study, read a book, or meet up with friends. Ordered the tiramisu. It's the best in town. The cacao powder, mascarpone, and the coffee-soaked ladyfingers were all at the right proportion that everything had its distinctive taste but at the same time all complement each other in the mouth. Don't miss out on that tiramisu next time you go!

Good place to do homework. Not as crazy as the downtown location, which is good because I don't care for crowds.

Great coffee. Definitely the best, but brewing each cup as you order does make things slow. Free WiFi.

They roast, blend, and package their coffee in Dubuque, Iowa. Their name derives from a street in Iowa that contained only five houses comprised of the founder's family. In the early 2000s the street was annihilated to make room for highway expansion, but the name lives on in the coffee. For my first review from their brand, I went with a whole bean bag of their Shot Tower Espresso blend. The company describes that blend as having a " smooth yet sharp character with no bitterness. The delicately dark roast level results in a taste and aroma that is full-bodied with a sweet and creamy complexity." Beans for their signature espresso blend are selected from Central America, South America and Indonesia in order for a unique and nuanced flavor profile. I found this particular roast to not only be delicious, but one of my new favorites. I'll be on the lookout for more of their blends at my local grocer. Picked out what I wanted and ordered online...only to find out that my in-laws don't really use ground coffee, but single-serve instead. Agh! Once I found out this very-important-information, it was an 1.5 hours after placing my order. I emailed customer services asking about how I could change my order from ground coffee to single-serve. Eric immediately wrote me back and explained that it would be easier to cancel my order, then I could reorder what I did want, as they use a 3rd party credit card processor. I was instantly refund the $ I spent on my original order, so I turned around and bought the single-serve coffee instead. Less than 48 hours after placing my online order my in-laws received their coffee in the Chicago suburbs - super fast delivery. They were thrilled, and I can't say enough good things about Verena Street's products and their customer service. Would love to see them expand their single-serve coffee flavors in the future. The ability to choose a shipping date (especially for the holiday season) would be a nice option, too. Highly recommend.

This breakfast sandwich was delicious! Full of flavor and the croissant was perfectly buttery and flaky. Rating = 9.2/10). Iced Vanilla Latte (Solid. Solid. Solid. Enjoyed that this latte wasn't overly sweet to the point where it drowns out the espresso flavor. It wasn't the best I've had, but it definitely got the job done this morning. Rating = 7.9/10). Service: The employees I interacted with and observed while I spent the morning working in the shop seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs. Everyone was polite and were chatting with the regulars as they came in and out. Ambiance: The physical space had all sorts of room for people like myself who were there looking for a place to be productive. From bar seating, high tops, tables, couches, and comfy chairs - this place can accommodate all sorts of patrons. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better place to serve as my office for the morning. A well deserved 5/5 rating!
