This huge pub soaks up the students from Exeter uni, in its 3 bars and wonderful orangery, but hah you were an undergraduate once so let them enjoy this place with its cheap grub and grand selection of ales from near and far. Of the Wetherspoons establishments in Exeter, this one's definitely my favorite -- though, that said, it's hardly anything special. They have inexpensive food, but it isn't great. Just £3.99 for a burger, chips & beer of your choice all day, every day, with other similar kinds of deals depending on the day of the week & time of the day. Fair warning though: as cheap as their burger/chips/beer deal is, the burger is dry and tasteless, the chips only slightly better. They do have a decent selection of drinks, though, but it doesn't apply to their cheapest deals. Regardless, it's still a popular joint, perhaps owing to its proximity to both the University of Exeter & Exeter College plus its low prices, making it a decent late night spot for hanging out with friends. read more

Massive pub with an awesome..huge patterned window at the back (called an Orangery apparantly). And outside the sloped garden would probably be quite nice if it wasn't pouring down. The building has been around for 200 years spending most of the last century as a hotel before Wetherspoons got in the game. There are at least 2 bars here. I know this because after waiting almost 10 minutes to get served at one of them I was informed that 5 of the 6 ales I had been trying to choose between were off (what happened to turning clips round?). This meant another long wait at another bar behind a poor acne'd runt who looked about 12. So imagine my surprise when he ordered (and even more surprisingly got) a jug of cocktail...he was even asked if we wanted extra vodka shots. Do spoons not do challenge 21? I mean I'd be surprised if the lad was allowed on a rollercoaster. Anyway there were more ales to choose from here (still...I don't think that they could make the good beer guide promise of at least 10 ales...unless there was another...better supplied bar I didn't find). I enjoyed a nice pint of Spinney. There seemed to be some free newspapers about too, which is something I always like. read more

It's a vast rambling pub - with a couple of bars and loads of seating, plenty of nooks and crannies to sit if you want a bit of a better place to chat. The food is what you expect with any Wetherspoons - pretty rubbish, but that isn't why you go there! This is one of the best Wetherspoons I have ever visited. Even though it is huge it doesn't lose any of its charm, with three bars and a huge Orangery area which is pretty impressive. They have the usual deals such as curry club and steak night and the infamous Beer and Burger. It has a pretty mixed clientele ranging from students (it is just across the road from the uni) to proffesional, to the regulars propping up the bar. In the summer the large outside area becomes packed and creates a pretty nice atmosphere. There are rumours that the guy that owns the Wetherspoon chain lives in Exeter so maybe that is why the Imperial is so nice read more

We love this place. Once a posh hotel;then a seedy pub this Wetherspoons is quite unique. Still loaded with the nostalgia of a bygone age (check out the bronze Art Deco dancer whizzing down the bannisters!) the rooms are large and rambling and the old Orangery is a wonderful place to linger over a meal. You can sit out on the lawn in Summer too. Food is standard good cheap Wetherspoons fare-the new spinach and sweet potato curry is a triumph-and the range of beers and wines is Wetherspoons best. read more

Great pub, with a great atmosphere, parking, beer garden, cheap food and drink and quite close to town. I have eating in a number of Wetherspoons an have always found this one to very good. It's great at anytime of the day. Breakfasts are very good there, which will normally get before we head into town for shopping etc. Staff seem very friendly and nice to chat to. Known sometimes as the Impersonal because of its large open plan spaces, although it also has smaller rooms. Can get very busy in the evenings, especially when the students are in town. Can sometimes be quite hard to park although there is parking nearby. Overall.. An excellent pub! read more

The Imperial is a grand old station building and its quite near the main station (St Davids) The conservatory area is really grand with a large feature window and grand high ceilings. In the summer, or whenever it gets warm, the beer garden is a great place to kick back. There's loads of benches, even a lovely big lawn for relaxing on. They even serve food outside. The food and drink are just what you would expect from a Wetherspoons, cheap and fairly standard, but its just a great place to be. read more

Let's get some pespective here. Its a weatherspoons, so you know what you get and what you get is what you would expect. Beer: Cheap and generally pretty good choice of lagers, ales and cider, wine and shots. Food: Rubbery - Its cheap so what do you expect? Burger and pint for about £5 its good value, but its like Tesco's own brand beans. It will just about do. atmosphere is generally very pleasant. Big open rooms, and huge beer garden ideal for sunny days. Loads of students as its cheap and just down the road from the 6th form and Uni, but you will also get them taking their parents there too. NOt the greatest pub, I could name at least 5 pubs with something more unique to offer, Turf, Double locks, the angel, Firehouse, The clifton, Port royal, Well house, but if you need a generic pub for all comers you could do plenty worse than the Imperial. read more

I was very disappointed with our experience at The Imperial. The service was atrocious (took 45 minutes in line to order and another 45 minutes for our food to arrive, although those seated around us got theirs, including members of our party, got theirs in about 20 minutes), and the food was mediocre (some dishes were cold and or undercooked). Our friends who frequent often swear the food and service is usually better. However, we are unlikely to return. read more

What an unexpected surprise! Walking up to the Imperial you think that you are approaching a stately country home. Inside there are ample rooms and bars to enjoy including a beautiful orangerie. It makes you feel very special even if you are having a pint of Carling you've got a bit cheaper with a token. In the summer it is great to sit outside on the wide and sloping lawn and look out over Exeter and the hills beyond. The best place to go to Exeter for a drink and Curry night. read more

A great pub, popular with students and office types. It does a lot of cheap meal and drinks offers and has a massive conservatory which is lovely in the summer if you want to be indoors. There's a very big beer garden as well, probably one of if not the largest in Exeter. read more

One of my favourite places to go out with friends when you want to catch up! This is a great place to go out for the evening, you can start with food from their extensive menu, accompanied by drinks of course and because there is no loud music blasting in your ears you can stay there all night enjoying your food, drink and converstation with your friends. Imperial also do a very good breakfast in a very competitive price range so always a good start to a retail therapy day or even to recover from the night before! Lunchtime has great meals, something for everybody. Great for families too, tables available for large or small groups. Outside areas, free wifi access, tv screens and meeting room available. The venue is lovely, with one of the best (only?) beer gardens close to the city centre. Their Oktoberfest is really great, although I'm not particularly into the beer! The food can be very bland, and uninspired, but it's generally cheap and unoffensive that's what you get with wetherspoons, I suppose. However, if you're in a large group sometimes the staff find it difficult to serve everyone within half an hour of each other! The loos are quite good (always an important factor for the girls!) and the staff are friendly if a bit overworked and inclined to smashing glasses. read more

As far as Wetherspoons go, this is an extragavant pub! I was recently working in Exeter for a few days and come our first night off we were headed here! On the short trip from our accommodation at the university campus, I heard chatter of it being the UK's biggest 'spoons. And, yes, I doubted the size of this place. Surely it can't be that big? Wow, holy mother of pubs, this place is HUGE. If you think George Square's Counting House is big, you're living a lie! This could be Gatsby's house! It's like a huge country estate with several large bars leading from room to room. It seems like it never ends until you reach a huge mirror/window, scaling the whole back wall, reminiscent of the kind you'd find in an old train station. This leads out to a huge outdoor area. The place was packed and service was great! Probably one of the most visually stunning pubs I've visited and so unexpected. I can't comment on drinks prices since I was on the soda water and lime with a 6am start the following morning but I'm sure they were as great as you'd expect! It's just a Wetherspoons in that it doesn't offer anything particularly unique or different but it sure is beautiful! read more

This isn't a typical wetherspoon's pub, it's better. The food and drink is typical wetherspoons's fare - cheap and sometimes cheerful - but the surroundings are better and the clientele includes fewer heavy drinkers (at least at lunchtime, I've not visited in the evening). There is a very large garden and a large orangery where you can enjoy a quiet drink with your meal. The other wetherspoons in Exeter are typical wetherspoon's pubs, this one is not. read more
