We visited this pub at lunchtime last Sunday. It was apparently taken over by new owners back in July and we had heard and read mixed reviews but decided to give it a go. It's in a great location, with a lovely view of Farleigh Hungerford Castle (which was owned by my companion's family about 600 years ago...) The food (Sunday roast) was OK, but nothing special either in quality or presentation. However, the ambiance of the pub itself was rather a disappointment; yes, there are fires in the grate and the Hungerford family crest on the wall - but the pub looks 'unfinished'. It's basically just a room with lots of tables and chairs which, when we were there for a late lunch, were all empty. The window seat cries out for some cushions, the empty curtain rail for a curtain, the empty corner shelf for some sort of ornament... There is huge potential, but I felt the owners had a fair way to go both in terms of food and decor. Would we go back? Yes, probably, but only because of the location and it's family link. read more
