5 stars for saving many hours driving or crossing on ferries..though I miss the ferries. When I went for my interview to Hull College of Art I went on a ferry (and got stuck on mudflats for a couple of hours on the way back..was very merry..where else could you drink at 7 in the morning..not that it was!) I watched the building of the bridge and went to the opening celebrations. I knew people who worked on it..spinning cables. My photography lecturer flew a hot air balloon through it shartly after it opened. of course the locals said it went from no-where to nowhere and Yorkshire and lincolnshire people never did mix :) South from Beverley and north from Barton on Humber is the famous landmark, the Humber Bridge. For 17 years it was the world's longest single-span suspension bridge, and was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in July 1981. It took nine years to build and provided the link between two areas which had previously been separate and distinct parts of the country. The reasons why a suspension bridge was chosen were twofold. Firstly the Humber has a shifting bed and navigable channel along which a craft can travel is always changing; a suspension bridge with no support piers in mid-stream would not obstruct the estuary. Secondly, because of the geology and topography of the area, the cost of constructing a tunnel would have been excessive. It's an impressive structure, spanning just over 1400 meters, with concrete along weighing almost half-a-million tonnes. The fifty-millionth vehicle passed over the bridge in September 1993; however, the bridge hasn't managed to pay for itself since opening. Currently costs £2.70 for a car crossing. read more

I'll be honest, it looks spectacular from afar, but you drive over it and there's nowhere to stop so unless you walk then these wonderful views of the river arent exactly possible to see. We made the mistake of going over the bridge when we were visiting relatives, and feel it was £6 wasted. The walls along the side make it virtually impossible to see anything over the sides, and we apparently were going too slow at 55 mph because we had a truck right up behind us one way over the bridge. I suppose it does save time and money in the long run if you need to cross this for work, but its certainly not the excitnig tourist trap some of the Hull tourist books seemed to suggest it was. read more

This suspension bridge connectes Hull to Grimsby and is very impressive to look -especially ay night whe it's lit up. There is some traffic that goes across it but not as much as there would be if the Toll charge was scrapped. I do believe there are sone talks on scrapping this charge. The Hessle forshore area directly below the Humber bridge is a great palce to go when it's a nice day. Unfortunately there is a toll charge for crossing this bridge either way ( I think it's £2.60 each way). If you live in Hull you have to go across the Humber bridge at least once - walking across is free!!!! read more

This bridge was errected the year i was born. Somewhat scary when crossing in bad weather but for myself it's the gateway out of Hull and to the airport!! With impressives views and there is a good play area for kids at the country park and good for hikers. Although the toll is actually quite high due to the running and maintance cost of the bridge and i believe there are some talks over either reducing or scrapping the toll all together. This is a great place to visit during summer months as not much fun during the cold wet ones.A great scenic walk over the bridge is a must for any fans of sights.We did this a couple of years ago for the british heart foundation to raise money towards their causes.This is done regularly along with numerous others they do.At the bottom of the bridge is a car park so you can take the kids,dogs & picnic stuff for a fun day out.There are a few things to do for kids along the way but mostly its an enjoyable walk below read more

Contrary to popular belief, the Humber Bridge isn't Hull's most famous landmark, as it is in Hessle, a separate town and county. A convenient crossing point over the river Humber, the advantage of this is outweighed by the over priced tolls and the difficulty turning around if the bridge is closed, which happens an awful lot in winter, if you commute accross the bridge and it is closed you have to go all the way round the Humber to Goole to cross. Thought about, planned and executed entirely the wrong way, it is also a blight on the landscape. The long gone ferry was far more efficient. read more

The birdge looks impressive from affar and when you see it approaching in the distance you always know you're almost home! (If you live in Hull..) Its great for people who need to get across the river although its a bit pricy as there are tolls to pay which can be a pain for people who need to cross the bridge on a regular basis. There are some pretty views from the bridge, but you only need to see it once, then it loses its novelty. read more

Very impressive to look at, and kids always love their first crossing, but at the end of the day it's just a big bridge.

This is fantastic! I surprised myself by walking all the way across (from the Barton side) as I usually moan if i have to walk anywhere. Up there, looking down is like being in another world. As a man made structure it really is quite beautiful and also 30 years old this week. I always watch out for it along the road from Scunthorpe when im returning from London on the coach, and get a buzz when i see it as it means im nearly back read more

the humber bridge is a great way to start your journey out of town but the toll keeps rising along with everything else i suppose. The view when crossing is fabulous although makes me a little dizzy sometimes. Worth a walk too on a nice weekend afternoon its definately breathtaking when strolling accross. Don't fancy it too much when its windy though, so give it a try but watch out for the weather. read more

The bridge it pretty and although you have to pay to cross it, it would cost more in petrol to avoid it. There is a part for pedestrians, and although its a long way, it's a pretty view when you're standing on it. There is a pub not far from the bridge, so you can have a beer, some food and look at the bridge lights. read more

the humber bridge is probably hulls most famous landmark and definitely one to be proud of. unfortunately it is quite pricey to go across, especially if you need to cross it often. but nice to take a walk across which is free! there is also humber bridge country park which is fairly nice for a walk around on a sunday afternoon. it has a few different playgrounds and things. read more

An impressive structure with equally impressive views. Toll charge is a fairly decent price to say thst going around would be alot longer and cost around the same in fuel if not more. There is a pedestrian walk way where you can see the bridge in all its beauty free of charge. read more

its free to walk/cycle over and there are some nice little villages over barton on humber way. also some nice pubs :-)
