I stayed here and the Hotel was actually pretty good for the most part. The 3rd floor had some weird smell to it in the hallway I think it was the cleaning solution they use but it smelt like pickles. As for the room it was great. Not really sure why I was on level 3 when it was empty at the hotel oh well. I would totally stay here again it was very nice hotel all the staff was very nice. The breakfast was ok at least it had a selection but the eggs were kinda not that good. Stay here it is worth the price. read more

Ryan got us checked in with a quickness, he was friendly and informative. The room, linens and bedding were all clean and smelled good. The bed was comfortable and the shower hot with good pressure. It's noisy. The freeway I could hear all night, - I sleep with white noise no matter where I go & it could be heard over that. Unfortunately we weren't top floor so I could hear the people above us as well. All in all, i would stay again if needed but would ask for a top floor. We have been coming to Salem for the past four years because we had a student attending Willamette University. We always stayed at the hotel closest to campus because we felt we were getting a good deal with the "friends and family rate". Fast forward to graduation year and the daily rate seemed rather high so I went shopping around and came across The Hotel Salem. And after staying there, we should have gone here from day 1/year 1. First off, it's a fair distance from Willamette University, however the proximity to multiple places to eat, coupled with great rates, made up for it. It's a stones throw away from Trader Joe's for Christ's sake so a lot of our shopping was done in minutes. Not to mention a Walmart and Costco is nearby as well. The rate I got off from Booking.com also included daily breakfast and it was a great breakfast to start your day. Make your own waffles, coupled with multiple bread options, coffee, juice, fresh fruits and scrambled eggs, breakfast meats and fresh biscuits and country style gravy rounded the overall menu. Just wish the dining room area was a little more bigger. Onto the washer/dryer on the 1st floor. They both take quarters ($1.00 worth) and the washer takes 35mins to complete a normal cycle, while the dryer takes 45mins. There is only one of each so set your watch to make sure you go back on time after each cycle so someone else can start their load. The room is only open from 9am thru 10pm so plan accordingly. Water pressure in the shower is great. The dial is super sensitive and a very small turn from scorching hot to bearable is about 1/8th of a turn so test the water before you start the shower-head. The main issue our two rooms had was the shower curtain not being wide enough and the curtain sliding to one side versus the other. The first night, our bathroom got a lot of water on the floor. I finally figured out a solution by putting painter's tape on the curtain rod and extended a "tail" so that the curtain can go over this "stopper" of sorts and not slide down the rod to expose the other end. They should get a wider curtain to prevent this from happening. All in all this hotel was clean, staff was friendly and the price was right. I had concerns because I saw other reviews of people stating the smell of recreational MJ proliferating the floors. That was not the case for us except one night we came back and could smell it in the elevator. None in the hallways and we stayed there a total of 4 nights. So it turned out ok. So if you plan to travel to Salem, stay here. You won't regret it read more

DO NOT get a connecting room if you're not with a large group. We could literally hear every word, sneeze, and cough from our neighbors (and they were not being loud). We had to move rooms because it was really distracting. - The rooms are OK, a little narrow for multiple people and the bathtub/toilet room is very small. The rooms themselves could use a coat of paint and an update, it's very 80's in there, they could use a modern upgrade. My daughter's soccer team stayed here while visiting Salem, OR for a soccer tournament. This was our first time visiting Oregon. The daily rate was reasonable for what we got. The hotel staff was very helpful in assisting our team with getting a good group rate. Instead of getting a discount code to use while booking online, we had to call and give them our team name. The hotel itself is decent. You could tell some parts of the hotel got a facelift. The rooms were a good size for a family of 4. I really like that the sink and counter space are outside of the bathroom. This was helpful when getting ready in the morning. We didn't have to fight over the bathroom in the mornings. The beds were very comfortable, and the beddings were comfortable. The breakfast was....MEH. The eggs tasted like egg beaters, there was no variety in the breakfast meat the whole time we were there (bacon 4 days and rubbery sausage 1 day), and there was only biscuits and gravy as the starch option. In my experience with free hotel breakfast options, this was probably the worst that I've had. The hotel staff was pretty friendly. If you are looking for a good hotel for sports teams, this one isn't really that. The floors are extremely squeaky and the walls are paper thin. We got multiple complaints about the girls running to their rooms and talking in the hallway. There also wasn't a meeting room to do any team dinners. We were fortunate to use the breakfast area to do a team dinner, but we pretty much had to beg to use it and it came with a time limit and lots of stipulations. I personally probably wouldn't stay here again unless I really have to, but it was decent enough for a short sports trip. read more

TL:DR - Would recommend. This was our first time to Salem, much less the Hotel Salem. We didn't know what to expect from either, but were pleasantly surprised on both fronts. From the front desk experience - where a lot of information is transferred about everything from the breakfast hours to the location of the ice dispenser - to actually getting settled into the room, the experience was very good. The hotel looks as though it was at one time a standard matchbox style hotel that underwent a facelift, inside and out. The reception area is well lit, doesn't feel crowded, has a modern feel to it. The carpets in the hallways seem to be in good condition. The room numbers are well marked and easy to locate. The inside of the room is not huge, but it's not small either. It was plenty for my wife, myself, and our dogs. Speaking of dogs, there's a small patch of grass outside the back door for the furry travelers, and the hotel provides pickup bags and a place to deposit them... that apparently some folks choose not to use. If you're walking a dog out there, be good to the next people that walk out there, please! Getting back to the room, again, modern, clean, well maintained. My standard complaint about ALL hotels is there's never enough USB charging stations, but that's a growth area for the whole industry. Staff, accommodations, and breakfast were all done well enough, there's no complaints from our end. It's not a Ritz Carlton, but it nails all the basics very well. read more

We arrived with our niece, who has autism and OCD about her surroundings. We had been booked in a single bed room. What we needed had been a room with two beds, but there had been an error when we had booked. The front desk staff quickly helped us to get into a room with a King size bed and a pull out couch. We spend the night happy and our niece's time was made all the more pleasant by the kindness of the front desk for working with us. Breakfast was amazing!!! We even had seconds at the invitation of the morning crew. Waffles, eggs, cereal, bacon (crisped to perfection) and every pastry you could want. We will be back. read more

We are on day 5 of 6. Coffee always in the lobby with cookies in the evening. Everyone is so nice and accommodating. We stayed with our Pyradore pup. The complimentary breakfast was amazing, real glass plates and silverware, not paper & plastic. We did take advantage of the heated pool. The room has a king bed and a living room area. We stayed here a couple weeks ago with our 2 dogs. This was the first time staying at this hotel as we typically stay in Silverton when we are in the area. We had a little room issue when we got to our room and it was handled wonderfully. Every single staff member we came in contact was extremely friendly, and helpful. It seems like customer service is a thing of the past, unfortunately, but not here. Hands down the most positive experience we have had dealing with employees at any company lately. Even with the room issue that wasn't a dealbreaker (we are all human, people make mistakes), that again, was handled wonderfully, we will stay there again, if for no other reason than the customer service is a 12/10. read more

My first experience of staying at this motel was back in 1992 when I stayed here to scope out a job. I was living in Montana then. I moved to Salem a couple of months later. Fast forward almost 30 years and many life changes, and I'm back to staying here when I am in town on company business. I live in Idah now. I haven't had a bad experience here at all. The rooms I've had are always clean and the entire staff treats me with upmost kindness. Covid has stopped some of the normal services, but they still are willing to do whatever they can to make sure all their guests are happy. Sure this place could maybe do an update or two here and there, but it's still one of the nicest places in town to stay far removed from an area I no longer wish to stay at. Very convenient spot as well. Walgreens, Trader Joe's, and a very decent laundromat all within walking distance. Some fast food places are also a short walk, or you can take a short drive to one of many good restaurants nearby. Tsunami Tap House is next door if you want a beer to relax before drifting off to sleep. read more

We stayed here last night in a double queen room. My 3 stars is because the staff were SO nice, it was clean, modern, and the room was nice, clean, and quiet. Unfortunately, they only have a sack breakfast available (unimpressive) and the pool was COLD, even though it's indoors. This is the reason we chose this hotel. My daughter loves to swim, so that was a huge bummer. I feel like I would come back if those things were corrected, but rooms shouldn't be full price when everything isn't available. I wasn't expecting much, but this place exceeded my expectations. From the moment I walked in to check in, to the time we left, the employees (and I mean every single one I saw(I saw around 7 or so) were so nice, welcoming, and accommodating. Very friendly and helpful as well. Our room was actually pretty great. It wasn't fancy or anything, but the beds were nice and they were comfortable, and I didn't notice anything being dirty or broken. One thing that myself and my friend who stayed with me felt, was that in a two king bed room, the television in the middle was WAY too small to even watch. They definitely need to get bigger televisions. It just looked weird. But there was also a bar/counter top that we could set things, and make coffee, which was nice. There wasn't too much noise. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. They were accommodating with my late check in and helped to direct me to restaurants in the area. The rooms are very large! Dual sinks, sitting area and very comfortable beds await you. I loved the fact that the couch in the room converts to a sofa bed. Also, there is a fridge and microwave in the room. There is free hot and cold continental breakfast with plentiful breakfast options. Free Wi-fi as a guest here as well :) I don't know if I'll head to Salem soon? This hotel intentionally misleads people into believing that there is a one time pet fee for cleaning. At check in (around 1am when we arrived), the desk person says that they need a major credit/debit card in file for a one time pet cleaning fee of $20. The fact of the matter is that regardless of how many times they actually clean the room, they charge that cleaning feed per night. For example; let's say you stay 2 nights but you decide you do not need housekeeping during your stay. This means that they only need to clean the room once. Still, I was charged 2 cleaning fees of $20 per night. When I called to ask why I was charged twice, Sabrina at the hotel argued stating that there's no way the night shift person would say that it was a one time fee of $20. Well, he did. So, in short, buyer beware. The room was ok. It's was clear that housekeeping does the bare minimum but what should we expect from such a mediocre hotel. read more

The value for what you get seems a bit off - for a place that's around 130-200 dollars per night you'd expect a bit more updated decor, or building but it's basically from 1988-this is a 80 a night hotel for double the price. I stayed here for one night while traveling to California. I wasn't expecting a lot but when I walked in, I was pretty surprised on how well they decorated it. They have Baby Yoda figurines at the front desk which I thought was cute lol. In the lobby, the staff welcome you and are very kind and patient. They have a pool, vending machines, and a gym. When I got to my room it was very clean and nicely decorated. It had AC, a couch next to the AC, 2 very clean beds, a large microwave next to a mini fridge, and a small countertop above the microwave and fridge to put your belongings on. There's also a coffee maker with tea with sugar, creamer (I think) and extra cups to make it with. Inside the bathroom, there are clean towels and the bathtub is very clean as well. I thought it was really nice because you can change the settings on how powerful the water shoots out when you go to take a shower. Breakfast was also really nice because there was a breakfast bar with a variety of foods. At one part of the bar, there was yogurt and toppings to make a parfait. There were there were blackberries and raspberries for the fruit, and two different kinds of granola to put in it as well. The fruit was really clean and didn't seem to have any mushy parts on it. The dishes were also very clean and didn't have any dirt on them. Outside to the left from where you exit the building there is a small grass area where you can take your dogs at. It's pretty nice and my dog enjoyed it as well haha. It's not huge but it's about the size of the lobby or maybe a bit bigger. I really liked this place and so did my family. You should come! This is a Good basic hotel South side of Salem a couple of miles off the Hwy. . Staff were pleasant. Breakfast was good with standard hot/cold faire. They had coffee, juice, a couple of types of cereals, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, waffles. Our room was quiet, clean and large. We ended up in a "Family room" which was even larger. Their family room is a room and a half with three beds and quite large. I reviewed the negative comments none we experienced and most were from 1-2 years ago. Only complaint is the Air condition didn't work great. Hot or cold, didn't hold a temperature well. We liked the location- which was convenient for us. It is in a newer, nicer area of town and we would stay here again. read more

AMAZING WATER PRESSURE IN THE SHOWER!!! This is pretty huge with us and so i just wanted to mention it first lol... we were on a trip up the Oregon coast feom California and stayed at three different hotels during our trip, this was our last before heading home inland. This hotel is by far the best and only one worth the value that we paid. The front desk woman was extremely friendly and even accommodated me when I asked to be moved to a different floor. She was extremely cheerful and seemed to genuinely care about how our trip was going. The rooms are very nice, very clean and had a refrigerator, microwave and good cable. After a long trip of staying at overpriced crappy hotels prior to this one, this one was a blessing! The water pressure in the shower, as I mentioned before, was amazing and so relaxing after a long trip! They also had soap and shampoo conditioner dispensers and both smelled amazing. The breakfast was a full breakfast and not just cereal and muffins. They had sausage and potatoes and eggs, waffles, toast and cereal and fruit and yogurt. My only complaint was that the sausage and potatoes we're not cooked in a pan so they had no sear on them and tasted seem to have just been heated up in the microwave, which wasn't that great. But all things considered and how much we paid for other hotels that were way less impressive, this one was definitely a hotel I would stay at again read more

I was pretty surprised at how expensive most of the places in Salem were even on discount sites. We paid about the same per night as the Red Lion in Olympia (80-90) a night and it was definitely lacking in a few areas. The checkin went fine, we came in late but the girl at the front desk was adequately friendly. My first concern came as we got into the rickety elevator and went down into the basement.. Yes people.. The basement, to our room. It was clear from our initial descent that the building is quite dated. The carpet needing to be changed was nearly at crisis level. The bathroom was nice and large but the shower and toilet were very old and the toilet barely flushed. There was a slip mat in the shower that could probably be used as a science project. Ok enough jokes, while these aspects certainly could benefit from a facelift I stand by my three star review, three stars means it's A-ok, and it was! You could see evidence of effort. A nice huge bed with clean linen and comfy pillows, a good tv, desk and mini fridge. They had a hot tub, indoor pool and a small fitness center that all appeared clean and well kept. And lastly, and most importantly, food! The complimentary breakfast was the nicest breakfast of anywhere we stayed, hands down. The breakfast had a large pastry selection, biscuits and gravy, a waffle maker, juices and coffee, a selection of fresh fruit, yogurt, scrambled eggs and crunchy bacon. There was also a hotel employee present who kept the breakfast bounty plentiful, bussed tables, and was an absolute doll when I asked to read the egg ingredients to make sure they were gluten free. Our stay at the Phoenix Inn was very pleasant. The front desk staff were friendly and very accommodating. The room was immaculately clean -- as well as the entire hotel. The FREE breakfast was over the top -- homemade waffles, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, hot and cold cereal, bagels, muffins, juices, coffee, tea, milk and pastries. We washed our clothes at the laundry -- quarters and detergent is at the front desk. The pool is very clean. We will DEFINITELY stay at this hotel again when we visit Salem. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Good rate on a building that is falling apart. Asked for an 8 am wakeup call which never came. Breakfast was typical for such a place. Coffee was better than Chevron but still barely drinkable. Almost every outlet is so worn out that you can't plug anything in without it falling out. Made me very nervous as I sleep with a cpap and that needs to stay on all night. Pulled out a piece of furniture and found a decent plug behind it but in doing so found that the microwave was not plugged in. There were pink painted toenail clippings in the tub and someone's mascara on the sheet of one of the beds. Some sort of pink mold in the corners of the tub and the fan is literally falling out of the wall in the bathroom. July 1 2014: Another update: The incidental fee is now $100, up from $50.00. Compared with other hotels in Salem, the incidental fee is the same as, or lower than most hotels in the area. Still a really friendly crew. Thanks for another great weekend. Just an update to let everyone know that the slightly funky smell in the hallway is no more. YAY! Also, this time the $50.00 incidental fee was credited back to my account as soon as I checked out. There also seemed to be a misunderstanding at the hotel (and I noticed a guest had this misunderstanding,) about the elevator not going to the second floor. At Phoenix Inn, the Second floor is actually the lobby. Not sure why, but there it is. I had a nice stay at Phoenix Inn. Thanks again to the staff! PS. When I checked in, I asked the front desk for a quiet room because I was getting away from a live-in job and needed peace and quiet. Believe me, I got a quiet room. I didn't realize that she spared me from a fate worse than death until I went downstairs for breakfast on my first night and heard kids at the other end of the hall. Thank you thank you! read more

I stayed here for three nights this week and loved it! The wifi worked fantastic as I had to do homework for my online classes, which is always a concern when traveling to unknown places. Only one day I had trouble connecting. I called the front desk and the gal that answered was very helpful to restart the router. I was back online within mere minutes and completed my assignments with ease. Housekeeping was on point. Always had fresh towels and the room was very uncluttered and smelled nice. There is free breakfast from 6:30-10am, however I was unable to make it the way my schedule went throughout my stay. The beds were very comfortable after my 20hour drive from Southern California. I was able to have friends over for a quick visit and entertain as there was a comfy chair in the corner and a desk chair, along with the comfortable two queen sized beds. The room looks narrow, but it's actually quite spacious if you keep your luggage tucked aside. The a/c worked wonders as I get hot very easily. It was easy to operate and very helpful to my sleeping conditions and keeping a good air flow in the daytime. Awesome water pressure and heat in the shower, which was lovely to enjoy after the long drive north, adventurous days of exploring Oregon, and enjoying a long shower since California is in a drought. If they weren't booked through this weekend, I would have gladly extended my stay a few days more! We stayed at this hotel as it is the only hotel in South Salem and is allegedly dog friendly with a $20 a night extra charge. At 10pm on our first night they were calling us to complain about our barking dogs (they were not barking but the calls and the knock on the door made them bark). Lots of sketchy folks wandering through this hotel as well. They also do not give dog owners a separate area to stay vs the non-pet owners. We have stayed many times at other pet friendly hotels all over the west and never had the poor experience we had at the lovely Phoenix Inn. The building construction is extremely cheap and transmits noise. We could here the girls soccer team running back and forth on the third floor and we were are on the 1st floor. Overall, a very poor experience at this hotel. Our room was old and dingy. On the plus side this should be the last time we ever have to stay in Salem, Oregon. Paid nearly $200 dollars night for this wonderful hotel experience due likely to the parents visiting for their kids in college and the hotel raising rates for that weekend. It really is basically an overpriced Super 8 Motel in lovely South Salem, Oregon. read more

This hotel was pretty AWSOME! The beds were extremely comfortable. Great pillows. The room was nice and spacious. Nice tv. Great water pressure. The indoor pool and hot tub were nice. Breakfast wasn't bad. The staff was polite. Only real negatives were I wish the pool was open 24 hours. And the housekeeping didn't clean out the fridge before we got there for who knows how long there was leftover food in it. Will most definitely come back if we are ever in Salem again. read more

This place is terrible! Humid dingy rooms. Toilet has a hard time flushing and makes a lot of noise for a long time after flushing. Room is non-smoking but reeks of stale cigarette smoke. The worst is the customer service. The guy who works the late shift is a complete jerk! My mother-in-law had a heart attack and we've been visiting past 10:30 pm. This guy was awful last night and even worst tonight. It's like he is irritated he has to get off his behind and actually do his job. We check.out tomorrow and it won't be soon enough. We are leaving here, hoping to find another hotel. I would rather sleep on my car then spend one more night in this place. read more
