Although this place had some particularly scathing reviews me and a friend recently stayed here. First off yes the building does somewhat resemble fawlty towers but it's a lively friendly hotel-no basil's here!
We checked in and as we were staying with 2 digs in the room (£10 each, cheaper than other hotels) we were placed in the annex which catered specifically for those with dogs.
Yes the furnishings could be considered dated but for the rates you can't go wrong. There is a restaurant and a bar which we only used for breakfast which was included and was banging! A good cuppa and a full English (minus hash browns and black pudding).
I would quite happily recommend this to anybody who needs accommodation for themselves and their four legged friends.
The only real downside for us personally was that some cruel and inconsiderate dog owners decided to leave their dogs in the backs of their cars all night, and there's a club near the hotel which made the dogs bark intermittently. But this wasn't the hotels fault.
Also the Victorian festival was on at the sane time so we saw plenty of folks in oldy worldly dress which was entertaining to see.
It's not 5 star but it doesn't claim to be. But I think it's worthy of a good 3 stars. read more
