Here they have a variety of options for those that have dietary restrictions, and healthy options for food as well. Air conditioning and beer, this was a lovely break in my exploration of North New York. Not too busy on a weeknight, the hostess was able to find a table near a power outlet so I could charge my phone and so I was here for about an hour to do that. In the meanwhile, a flight of tasty beers and while sipping them, a couple of Yelp reviews got written and posted. I SO want to love this place. Love the historic building, we love Clayton, and the food is good... but it just keep missing. My first experience, I was in a mood for light lunch so I ordered the lettuce wrap (appetizer) as a meal. I mean it was the tiniest little bit of chicken. Dry. Way over priced for what is what. Even if we had gotten that as an appetizer I would have been disappointed as it's not a shareable amount. Second experience, we arrived and it wasn't too busy, waitress seemed exhausted and bit cold. No smile, didn't greet us with her name. We were pretty hungry so we quickly ordered our drinks and food and stated that we will just take whatever comes first, she rolls her eyes and walks away. Because the children were sharing their lunch, I asked for an extra plate. When our food arrived, no extra plate, she sighed and walked away. My fish sandwich didn't come with tartar sauce, I asked for it, and she said "okay you'll have to wait" and walks away. This place is supposed to be a popular place but they didn't have to be so rude. I wasn't asking for any substitution, it's tartar sauce that was supposed to come with, and I asked for it politely. There aren't many options out here so we probably will go back, but I'd rather go to Di Prinzio's for their delicious pizza and pasta and definitely for better service. Plus view of the lake. Traveling with a small dog-- wasn't allowed to have it on the outdoor patio, which is not the norm at most other places. Waited quite awhile for someone to acknowledge us on a Saturday afternoon for seating, and they weren't slammed. One in our party is disabled and it was not a pleasant experience getting him seated plus the wait. The patio is pleasant. Love that it advertises itself as a poutinerie. Large selection beyond classic poutine that are spin-offs on poutine (e.g.: buffalo ranch). Filling and tasty choice. Others had well done burgers, so no comment to offer. Great Burger place in Clayton NY. Went on a boat ride and stopped here for dinner. My wife and granddaughter had the fish and chips (wish I took a picture). My son and I had a couple of their specialty burgers. We both had a Guinness, and the menu had a ton of craft beer choices.. Great meal after a nice day on the river. I will say on the down side that I wasn't pleased with the hostess, seating was all outside. She brought us to a table with full sun, I asked to sit at the table right next to us that had an umbrella. Her reply was NO we don't have a server for that table. Before we got our drinks the tables next to us were full. I'm sure our server wouldn't have cared to step 3 more feet to a table with an umbrella. We've been coming here for years. We have seen dogs on the patio. This year I reached out through Instagram if they allow dogs on the patio and got no answer however, yelp does say they allow dogs so when we showed up with our dog, we were turned away rudely by the hostess. You can absolutely have a policy and relay that information to a customer politely. All that said this place from year to year varies in a place we would recommend or not. It seems like the turnover rate is very high and some years you get a really good server and the food is excellent and other years it's just mediocre. Overall, we've had more mediocre experiences than excellent ones. This year, obviously we would not recommend them because we had a bad experience, but they probably should update their websites to properly reflect their dog policies. But to be honest, we probably won't be going back after our last experience. read more

I found this location on Yelp and it was also recommended by our local family we were visiting in Clayton. When we arrived to have lunch on a busy Saturday we were told outside seating was the only option. Our group found this odd, but didn't question it. The location is gorgeous and the outside seating had plenty of shade and a koi pond to capture our 5 year olds attention. We also spotted a chipmunk eating a French fry. I truly had high hopes for this restaurant based on the variety of menu items and the availability of fresh cut fries. Pros-our server was amazing! She was attentive, personable, and kind. I did not keep my receipt, but I know she had 2 sons and beautiful eyelashes:) Cons-Food quality was just not there for the price paid. The fries were cut way to thick and my chicken sandwich barely had any condiments on it. I did ask for the jalapeños on the side, but was then charged for them. They were part of the ingredients on the sandwich. My husband's burger was bland tasting and underwhelming. My sister in law also ordered the same Dirty Bird sandwich as I did. Her sandwich had the skinniest piece of chicken on it. Since she ordered all of her sauces on the side, we were also charged for each of those as well. Wow! What a cool find in Clayton. We didn't have to wait at all during a very busy weekend. We say right up front with the best views, and really cool ambiance. Our server ( wish I remembered her name) was outstanding. She basically picked all our meals for us and each one was fantastic. The poutine was the highlight of my whole trip. We arrived and were greeted with a friendly face. We were seated and received great service.

We were recommended to go here, and I was initially excited as it had been a while since I'd been to a poutinerie. I didn't see a lot of the inside except the well maintained restroom, as we sat outside in their spacious patio area. We were lucky the Canadian wildfire smoke had died down in that regard. I found the menu to have a good variety of burgers, sandwiches, and poutine options, so for the three of us we got an original poutine, a lebowski, coconut shrimp, and duck wings. For the duck wings, I was sad to see none of the sauces weren't spicy, but we were able to get it on the side and I'm glad we did. The "none of our sauces are actually spicy" coconut curry sauce was sweet upfront, but punched you in the face once you weren't looking. The wings, which were all drumsticks, were well cooked, crispy but juicy. For the coconut shrimp, the sweet chili sauce they come with forgot it was supposed to be sweet and was just a straight chili sauce. The shrimp themselves were fine, and met expectations of being shrimp and coconut. For both the poutines, the fries were perfect thickness, cooked to a great consistency where they had crisp but also flex, and weren't oily. The gravy, at first I believed it had a balanced viscosity, neither too thick nor runny, and saltiness to it. As I went on, I'm glad the poutine wasn't larger because it developed into a major salt bomb. This may have masked the cheese curds, which I felt disappeared into the dish and didn't bring anything to the party. However, in the Lebowski poutine, the sour cream did a great job of smoothing the salt assault out, and the bacon jam did add a touch of sweetness to the mix but not to be a detraction. I will say one reason I had to knock off stars was the service. It was fast, friendly, attentive. We also ordered ginger ales and received alcoholic beverages containing ginger ale instead, and our bill, initially, also contained items we didn't order. If you're wondering how I didn't know I was drinking an alcoholic ginger ale, I don't drink much and maybe you've never had a ginger beer or ale with a strong ginger kick. Regardless, not a good thing to get served surprise alcohol, imo. In the end, the only thing we tried I can recommend is the Lebowski poutine, but it was a fine enough experience that I wouldn't warn people away from going. read more

My husband and I typically love this place, we come in a couple times a year while visiting, but this last visit left a bad taste in my mouth. We were looking forward to having a couple beverages and enjoying the live music, but much to my dismay I couldn't get service. We ordered the Buffalo cauliflower (delicious), classic poutine (delicious), duck wings in the Thai chili lime sauce (so awesome we ordered a second order), fried green tomatoes (delicious), a burger (very tasty), a spinach salad (yummy) and fish n chips (the fish tasted like it had been frozen, thawed, refrozen, thawed and then cooked). An out-of-towner in Watertown for a couple nights looking for some great local bite and drink. Being a Monday night, apparently, my options were rather limited with many locales closed. Came across this one touted for great burgers, poutine and drafts. A quick glance at the menu and it was a no-brainer. Had a Hill Farmstead IPA that I enjoyed very much and ordered the Blue Ribbon burger with a side of poutine. Loved everything about this burger, except for, well the beef itself. The bourbon bacon jam was outstanding! Smoked blue cheese and stout caramelized onions tied it all together beautifully between quality toasted buns. Bacon would be nice here too by the way. Poutine was absolutely delicious with quality and crispy spuds! The beef however..... clearly not fresh made in house. No sear or char whatsoever. A sorry pale looking patty sitting in this otherwise beautiful burger. A damn shame. Topped it off with a house specialty Old Fashioned with Henry McKenna whiskey. MAJOR disappointment! The glass was filled to the brim with machine-made ice instead of a single large cube or ball that one should find in a proper Old Fashioned. No dark cocktail cherry. Saw that it was NOT indeed the 10 year Henry McKenna that I thought they would be using, but rather their cheapest mass produced version where a bottle retails for under $20! Could not even stomach the fact that this was supposed to be a $12 cocktail so I had them take it away and politely asked for the check. Simply put.... using fresh ground beef, properly seasoned and charred; training the bartenders to make proper classic cocktails using quality spirits is all it takes for you to be reading an entirely different review! The service was kind of a scramble at first but then got better. We were hungry so skipped the apps and ordered our lunch. We both got the same as we had when we visited two months prior, because it was sooo delicious. My wife ordered the BB King burger (great!!). I got the 5 Degrees of Kevin Bacon burger (awesome!!). This burger is topped with deep fried bacon (WOW) , caramelized onions and a flavorful sauce. I highly recommend both, cooked to a pink inside perfection. This was my second visit. My previous visit was 3 years ago and they haven't lost their touch or quality. The outdoor seating in a garden like setting is very calming and welcoming. So, for a couple drinks, burgers and fries. It was over $100. That's just absolutely ridiculous. I've been out to fine establishments and a bottle of wine, two nice entrées with all extras... 100 bucks-- $120 with tip. It took over an hour to seat us. They let our dog sit on the patio and brought a water bowl out for her. The server and host were a little awkward but nice. We ordered food and it came out in a timely manner. The poutine was cold and we were slightly confused on the Indian spices. It was good just not warm at all. It was a particularly cold day for camping, so we decided to ditch cooking outside and sought out something warm to eat indoors. We were lured in by a talented violinist who was braving the temperatures outside. A lot of interesting menu items, but we went for two different poutine dishes and the pierogies appetizer. The pierogies were very lightly fried and served with a with a nice bacon and onion jam. I had a very satisfying buffalo chicken ranch poutine and she had the tikka masala poutine. The Indian spices caused such a cultural cognitive dissonance for me that I couldn't even tell if I liked it. But points for being creative. Incredible beer on draft selection. The first time at a place in Alexandria Bay was pretty subpar, and moving to the area from a "foodie" city, I didn't have high hopes of finding restaurants we would return to time and again. We were pleasantly surprised by our experience at The Hops Spot! Love a place that is taking COVID-19 precautions seriously. All staff wore masks, there were clear signs for social distancing and traffic flow. The patio is plenty big and comfortable. They had table tents with QR codes for menus and we saw the waitstaff wipe down tables with sanitizer and even put down markers indicating a table was clean and ready.
