This pub has just been taken over by 38 ( I believe) local shareholders who have saved it from being turned into an Indian restaurant. Thank goodness for that. The people running are now focussing on providing a good selection of real ale and will be hosting more music in the future, especially jazz. The staff are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and the facilities are gradually being upgraded, while keeping the traditional cosy feel. The garden, where I found myself on Saturday amidst a group of drummers, dancers, and a fire-eater raising funds for charity, has enough room for music events and barbeques but still feels secluded, and the intimacy of this particular event added an extra dimension to the atmosphere. A small menu is served in the afternoons, and I would imagine that if they choose the right sort of food, they could continue the service into the evenings with great sucess. As I left the pub on Saturday night, to the sound of someone playing a few impromptu tunes (very well) on the piano in the corner, I felt great Hope for the future. read more
