The best ever. Carla is my hairdresser and she is hip, kind, listens and is the best haircutter I have ever had. I have been trying to get a "Shag" haircut for years and by golly she got it. I'm sure stylists think I'm a little obnoxious. Not for the typical reasons, like being too picky, or dramatically screaming in pain when they brush my hair, or having crazy expectations to look like Jennifer Lawrence when I leave. No, my obnoxiousness comes from having no clue or care as to what they do with my hair. Things I've said: "Maybe a bob? Or a pixie? An asymmetrical pixie? Or leave it shoulder length. Whatever." And: "I'm thinking purple? Plum? Blue? Maybe teal? Pink, definitely pink. I don't know; you choose." I'm sure it can be annoying, but I honestly just don't have strong opinions about hair, and I trust the experts. Fortunately, the stylists at the Hive don't seem to be bothered by me, and have suggested some pretty cool cuts and colors. I'm very particular about my reverse bob, and many have tried and failed to get it just right. I think it's because the shortness I like scare many stylists. Miana was brave! She tackled the short blended fade I desired in the back of my hair with gusto. I said 'it can be shorter and more buzzed-like' and she made it so! I was so happy!! I wanted to write an update to two visits since my original visit in January. A couple of months ago I had an appointment with Amber to get my hair colored and highlighted. She did a black all over color with red highlights. Having dyed my own hair black before I was a little nervous going back to it after how coarse it made my hair. Their coloring products are wonderful because my hair has yet to feel coarse. Now my highlights are a bit faded (as expected) but I still get compliments on it. About a month ago, I called right before I was going on vacation, and was placed with Tricia since Amber wasn't working that particular day. Tricia, too, is awesome! I found out she also works at the Benefit brow bar at Ulta and so I had her do my brows. I've never seen anyone do my eyebrows like her. Forgive me terminology, but she used something that looked like a popsicle stick to see how my brows lined up with my eyes and waxed from that and she actually trimmed my eyebrows. Whoa. I am very particular about who cuts my naturally curly hair, especially since I wear it very short. Having experienced many horrible cuts, I do my research and asks many questions as well as send several pictures of my hair. Miana Cornell was MAGNIFICENT and I highly recommend her. Even after all of my preliminary work prior to arriving for the appointment, she sat with me and discussed my concerns before attempting the cut. I think this is probably a great salon with talented stylists for certain types of hair styles - just not mine. I guess my style is quite conservative and after having been there and seen the hair styles of the other customers, I realized this is a great salon for very modern, young and somewhat adventurous styles. I went to Mianna and, while she did discuss with me what I wanted, it was not at all what I wanted when I walked out. Not her fault - I just learned a good lesson in that some salons have niches and I think they fill theirs very well. I wanted to leave this review not because I don't think they are good or qualified - I think they are probably great at certain types of hair styles. I am leaving this review for people like me who are looking for a style that is contemporary to the professional or even conservative side because The Hive did not provide the type of hairstyle that I was looking for. read more

I had been wanting to get my hair cut really short for a while, but felt unsure about how it would work on me. I chose the Hive because the pictures other customers had posted made me think they would probably be able to give me the style I wanted. My stylist was Amber, and she was wonderful! She made sure to give me the cut and style I wanted while modifying it for my specific face shape and hair texture. My hair looks better than it has in years, and I love it! I also loved the scalp massage before my haircut, and the type of shampoo they use was really nice. The place has a vintage, hipster-y vibe which I really enjoyed. I loved everything about this place! I have very stubborn dark brown hair and I went in wanting my entire hair dyed bright purple. Amber did my hair and she did amazing! She was super kind and made sure the result was what I wanted. I felt like I was hanging out with a good friend!! I called for an appointment on a Thursday and they didn't have to make time for me but Angela did. They have their own parking lot so don't let the fact that they are located downtown scare you off. When you walk in, the place has a very homey touch. The owner, who lives upstairs, has her dogs in the back and the decor is very "spiritual chick" I read some of the reviews that some customers thought this place was dirty. No it is not. The building is older and has concrete floors but it doesn't make this place dirty. I always want help deciding what I should do with my hair and most hair dressers shy away from discussing it. I guess because they are afraid the customer will hate it and blame them. Angela discussed options with me and told me what she thought would look good. It helped validate my decisions. Angela massaged my scalp with scented oil, shampooed my hair, cut it, thinned it out and it only cost me 35$ I'm definitely coming back. The prices are reasonable (around $40 with tip) and the place is fun and funky without being overdone. The tea-tree scalp massage is so relaxing! The ladies at The Hive saved me! I had an at-home bleaching accident on my daughter's hair (it literally melted her hair)...3 days before her first day in a new school! We are brand new to the area and hadn't been to anyone in the area yet. I sent the salon a message on Facebook and the ladies from the salon figured out a way to get me in. They looked at her hair and helped me figure out what happened with no judgement. Julie did an absolutely amazing fix, my daughter was so happy! She managed to save as much hair/length as possible. Not your run of the mill salon. If you are looking for a mainstream salon - this is not it. The staff are as eclectic as the clients they serve. Carla and her crew are true hair artists. The cuts, color and vibe they provide is like no other. If you are looking for vivid colors, trendy cuts and a welcoming homey environment this is the place for you. Great customer service. Color was great. I love that they are an eco friendly salon. My first haircut there (yes i went back, dont know why!) was awful. She razor cut my thick curly hair!! Which made it frizzy. And she cut one side shorter than the other. My Second haircut (still confused why i went back) was less awful, HOWEVER, i was charged almost the same amount for a touch up color and Short hair cut!!! Over $100 BOTH times!! I hate to give any business that is eco-friendly a bad review but I just have to. This massage I read and even asked about never happened. Neither did the tea tree oil treatment. Everything felt so hurried and rushed even though they weren't busy at all. It was pretty chaotic when everything should have been seemingly peaceful. As for my cut and color, it was average at most. I had pictures on my phone with what I wanted and it looked *somewhat* similar but not at all what was shown. Amber was my stylist. My opinion, this place is all hype and so hipster. I've read some really great reviews, which is what lead me there but I'll stay with the place I know. I actually just left my go-to salon to have what was done fixed. I was recently part of a bridal party in nearby Versailles, and a local recommended The Hive for getting our wedding-day hair done. Our hair turned out so great, but holy crap, the service was amazing! Just beyond! The three of us went in the Thursday before the wedding for a test run. Angela and Mianna were super friendly and accommodating. But on the day of the wedding, they were the MVPs. Seriously. They drove 45 minutes to come to the inn to do our hair, offered to pick up the flowers from the florist on the way -- we were going to make our own bouquets. Great, right? But when discovered the florist gave us the wrong flowers and we ran out of time to put them together, that's when the ladies seriously kicked butt. Mianna says, no problem, she sometimes helps her florist friend out. She somehow made the sad commercial roses look like cottage roses and whipped out some beautiful bouquets. I mean great. The attitude is ok, but the stylist really sucks. I came twice, paid a lot of money which does not make sense at all! Since I only did a tiny hair cut at the second time but they still charge a lot. They made you look good when you were there, but when you washed your hair afterwards, you will find that they are really bad at the hair cutting! Your hair looks messy and is not stylish at all! Excellent experience with Julie! I am new to Lexington, and finally had to bite the bullet and find a hair stylist here. I used Yelp and Google reviews to help find the right place, and if you're reading this. you're probably doing the same! I have naturally extremely curly hair, but that I keep chemically straightened. It is not the easiest to style, so I was nervous about finding someone new. I arrived for my appointment with Julie, and I felt immediately comfortable. She was ready for me, and she remembered who I was and what service I was there for, though we had only spoken by phone. She knew how my hair would be best cut (wet vs dry), and asked me what I wanted from my haircut that day. I described what I wanted, and the haircut I received is exactly that! She stopped to show me the cut several times as she went to see what adjustments I wanted made. She started with just the length changes, and added texturing as we went along. She asked me what I thought about every step- length off, texturing, layers, and thickness/weight. This was nice from both the perspective of both being nervous and being someone who had a specific cut in mind (I've worn versions of the same cut for a long time.) I have seen some reviews that say this place only does modern hairstyles, but we started off with a fairly conservative bob, just a little angled. I have no doubt Julie can do a conservative cut just as well as a more modern one. (I don't know what the right hairstyle terms are, so please forgive me if that's wrong.) I would also be comfortable (after just one cut) asking for whatever she thought looked good, as I'm sure she would ask what I thought before making a drastic changes. Oh, and the scalp and shoulder massage at the beginning was lovely as well! Here are things that are good to know, but have nothing to do with the service you will receive... As other reviewers, I also love the atmosphere at this salon- it is small and personal, with interesting local arts for sale. They do have their own parking lot, which I understand is a plus for downtown. It was easy to find with Google maps (I didn't try by myself though I don't think it would be hard). They have several very friendly animal greeters (two dogs and a cat, all very quiet), just be aware if you have very serious animal allergies. I am a bit wary of strange dogs, but these two are so sweet and docile, it never crossed my mind to be nervous! The price was extremely reasonable- $25 for a dry cut. And a lovely shoulder and scalp massage! The take home is I am extremely happy with my cut, and will definitely be back! read more

I contacted the Hive Salon while I was planning my wedding from out of state, and they were amazing to work with! Our stylist, Tricia, travelled from Lexington to our ceremony location in Frankfort and was so pleasant and peaceful to work with on our wedding day. All the bridesmaids felt amazing (and looked it too). I cannot recommend the Hive and Theresa enough for a bride and her bridesmaids!
