The Smiling Moose Saloon & Grill - Fresh Breaded Lake Perch w/ Hot German Potato Salad

Gotta tell you about our Friday night out. The guys at Hoban Brothers told us this place had a…read morereally good fish fry on Friday nights. So we drove to the sticks to try out this bar/restaurant. The building itself is a bit organic. It's old school wood inside. The bar was packed but there were three long tables. We sat at the end of one of those tables wondering what the protocol was . Within two minutes a very friendly (and cute) waitress approached us; and asked us what we wanted to drink. They have several good beers on tap. My wife ordered an Oktoberfest and I ordered a Spotted Cow. In minutes our waitress placed two beers in front of my wife. I was reaching for one when two beers were placed in front of me. Our waitress informed us that it was "double bubble" time. Two beers for the price of one. We perused the menu. Even though there were some great appetizers, we passed and decided to try their perch dinner. They also have bluegills, walleyes, haddock and catfish. The time slipped by as we sipped our beers. Out came our dinners. Wow, a very filled plate of food. The fish was excellent, as were the fries, cole slaw and rye bread. Even though the place was busy our waitress checked on us on regular occasions. Our meals were so good we were literally purring with pleasure. Note to my friends, if you're going to have an appetizer you better be hungry as we barely had enough room to finish our suppers At the end I shook our waitress' hand and told her she did a great job. Tipped her well. Bottom line, this is a great place to get a fish dinner on a Friday night. The food was great, the service was great, the ambiance is biker bar. It was a bit raucous. If you want the Wisconsin experience of the Friday night fish fry, it would behoove you to check this place out. Top three of Friday fish in the Manitowoc area in my humble opinion.

Great food, friendly service, and a fun atmosphere. Definitely a great local spot worth visiting.read more

Sometimes they have a golden bloody Mary, which is made with yellow tomatoes this also very tasty. A bonus is that you can choose any beer on tap for your chaser. Get the burger and truffle fries. If you have room for it, the cheese soup is divine.

Spent the weekend at the American Club and loved the ability to eat at several different…read morerestaurants within the same resort. Each one is distinct, with its own menu and atmosphere. The Horse and Plow is a great spot if you have a group or family where noise is not a bug but a feature. We came here on our second evening around 7:00 for dinner. Food: The menu has a good selection of beverages and pub-style food. There is an extensive list of whiskeys, including bourbon and rye, lots of beers, and some specialty cocktails. We settled on a draft beer and the Plum Crazy cocktail, which was super yummy. For food, they offer appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and a fish fry. There is even a Wagyu flat iron steak if you are interested in paying $75. We decided on the Double Butter Smashburger with truffle fries and the Walleye Fish Fry. The burger was good, although it could have been cooked a bit more to create more caramelized edges. The bun was good, but a bit too much bread for me, so I ate it open-faced. The truffle fries were delicious and could have been a meal in themselves. The walleye was battered and breaded with good texture, and the fish was flaky. I felt it was a bit overcooked, and the last several bites were very tough. Service: We did not have a reservation, and there were no tables available when we arrived. We took a spot at the bar, where the bartender got us an order of drinks. The service, both at the bar and at the table, was efficient but not especially friendly or outgoing. The food came out nice and hot, waters were kept full, and the check arrived promptly after the meal was finished. For those looking for a pub experience, this is a good spot. However, being at the American Club, I think I was looking for more of an elevated experience. This felt more like a place for a quick meal than somewhere I would feel compelled to return to. Atmosphere: It is a pub, and that is exactly what you get. It was very noisy at times, especially as larger groups were enjoying themselves.
