Dana and I got over to the Johnstown Reptile Expo to get food for Monty the Python so we stopped to fetch some food for ourselves. We stopped for lunch at a place that was a regular fir the 6 months that I lived in Johnstown, PA. The Haven sits across the street from the old Atlantic Broadband call center in Southmont and is known for their gargantuan sandwiches, like their rueben that's as big as a takeout box. But you know what we were there for... Brrrrgrrrs! I got the Bacon bluecheese swiss burger and Dana ordered up the carolina burger (hold the carolina - meaning no bbq sauce or cheese) but with double coleslaw. The Haven gets it right! Just like I remember! The burger patties are seasoned and cooked just right, laying on the perfectly soft bun. the blue cheese "sauce" on mine mixes with the swiss cheese to make the most interestingly awesome bitter and stinky mix then picked up by the smokey crisp bacon. Just had the worst experience I have ever had at The Haven. When my wife and I arrived, Sunday, 4:30 PM, there seemed to be one young lady taking orders, bussing tables and bringing drinks. My wife and I ordered dinner and waited. Approximately 30 minutes later our food arrived. My Reuben was cold enough to be considered as ice cream. The onion rings were so over cooked that they crumbled when you bit into it. I am still waiting for the server to bring the cole slaw that she said she would bring right away. My wife's pizza was cut through, if you tried to pick up a slice you got the whole pie. When I mentioned this to the server, she couldn't have cared less. This is one of the few times that I have left a bar/restaurant without tipping. It will be a long time before my wife and I return. read more

The food was not that great. I got sick to mine stomach. When me and my family walked in all we got was stares for the first 5 minutes. I did see a few of my kind they were probably regulars! By the stares they knew we were not from there! We ask the waitress Kennedy how was the sandwich The Haven it was recommended to me. My husband and I visit Johnstown often and tis has always been a convenient place to eat. the food is passable, expect for the meal we ordered last week. this was what we got: A bacon cheeseburger with fires, NO bacon , not cooked and cold limp fries. The owner is very rude. Had a mix up on a take out order. Called to let them know that what I got wasn't what I ordered and was told that it wasn't his problem that it was Grubhub's fault. Just bought two steak salads and two sodas from here $34.41 Both salads contained 4 French fries each, 4 slices of green pepper each, 3 cucumber slices each and 3 cherry tomatoes each. And the steak was laid on top with slices in it but not cut into strips, and if there was cheese on it I couldn't find it. read more

For a local bar and bar food this is our go to place. From burgers to wings to wraps we love it all. The beer battered fries are our favorite always with ranch dressing. We typically always have the same waitress who is so sweet and friendly. The service is quick unless they are really busy, then you wait. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because we rarely go when it's actually "clean" there is always a lot of tables that need bused and wiped down. However, if you're in town and looking for something good I highly recommend the haven. We will continue to come back! read more

I placed an order on over the weekend. Of the three burgers, all three were incorrect. One of them was missing the top bun. Every order of fries were missing. Tried calling over a period of two days to give them a chance to fix their mistakes and they never answered the phone. Last time I'm ordering from them. read more

The food and service were excellent. We had everything from the specialty sandwiches to tacos to the salads and all had large portions and were very good. We were in town for a couple weeks for work and I wish we had found it sooner since it was only a couple miles from the job. The haven use to be our go to place on a Friday night. Tonight was the last straw. My wife and I arrived at 730pm, the dining room had plenty of seats. We sat ourselves as usual, after 10 minutes a waitress asked if we have been helped. The answer was no so ordered 2 drinks when returned the drinks we ordered food. This place is a fun meeting place for weekends or an after work cocktail. But the food here is hit ir miss. Much more on the miss side. They have a hefty menu with typical barfood and some unique sandwiches The wings are generally good if you eat in. The buffalo hot sauce tasty but the wings were baby sized today. My brother got tge reuben. It was Huge!!! Could easily feed a family. Lots of tasty corned beef. And the thick homemade rye was a big hit!!! The sandwich went south bc of way too much thousand island dressing. It was way too sweet. And turned the toasted rye into Goo!!!!! I have been here a few times and each time has been a success. With a group of 8+, everyone was satisfied and easily ordered drinks in a timely manner. When only two of us dine in, the service is even better. The wings are crispy and have great flavor, the fresh cut fries are one of my favorite menu items, and the baked Italian on homemade bread is the best in town. First time here, the food was really good. I got the Rachel half size and thank goodness - the half size was enough to feed me to meals. We have been to the Haven no less than a dozen times. The last time we went will be our last. The service is usually subpar. The waiters and waitresses have always been nice to us, but are clearly overwhelmed. Most seem to wait the entire dining area and wait the bar. The food is hit and miss, but the last few times were really bad. When we first started going there a few years ago the food was consistently good, but over time it seems to be consistently poor quality. Pros: The beer battered fries are always awesome. We ate in the bar area on a weeknight. It worked for three adults and two teenagers. The prices are good and my burger was delicious. It was cooked perfectly, medium-rare - the portions were significant enough to fill me up. One of our party had the Reuben. It was exceptionally large. This is a point of pride for the Haven. I had a taste and was not disappointed. Of special note is the batter fried cauliflower - everyone at the table shared an order. Next time two orders. Me and my friend have been to the Haven several times. In my opinion, this is the best bar food in Johnstown. Their portions are huge; I don't know how they make any money! The food is delicious! - I've had the reuben, it's great (I personally don't like sourkraut, so I didn't have it). - My friend had the Rachel, bought a whole one, and she said it was very good and ate the whole thing over a 3 day period. Very big. Not sure what's in it. - My favorite - French dip. 2 people can easily share; very good and makes it very hard to try any thing else. - There chips (homeade; are the best I've ever had). Not a big fan of chips otherwise - Murphy's on tap, and I always drink tequilla and cran - and there drinks are big and 1 of the best mixtures I've had. With consistently good service (which is not happening now), this could easily be a four-star review. Sandwiches are huge and delicious, especially the Rachel and the hot roast beef sandwich. Unfortunately you can't count on quality. My friend ordered wings and asked if he could get all flats. No problem, we were told, and on other occasions this request was honored. The order came out with 2 flats and 10 drummies. Oh, sorry, we were told--no offer to make it right. An order of fries might be huge, hot, and delicious--or, literally, four sad lukewarm fries sitting next to a sandwich, with just a laugh from the bartender when this was pointed out, and again no offer to make it right. Wings might be crisp and delicious or flabby, soft, and unappetizing. What to say about The Haven?? I personally am a HUGE fan of their wings, for the johnstown area I'd say they are probably 3rd or 4th best around. I am a fan of Orchard, Windber Hotel, Crows Nest, Etc (in no certain order). Anywho. I do love their wings, the hot garlic are phenomenal and their ranch is super good. I do not think I have had anything bad from there quite frankly, some of my favorites would obviously be the wings, the Suboli is also phenomenal. I really can't put into words exactly how good the Suboli really truely is... Quite. Amazing. The Rachel and Ruben are phenomenal and huge. I have had the pizza once and wasnt overly excited about it. I've had their chips and fries before, both are very good. Some of the dustings you can get really make the chips pretty awesome. The beer list has expanded very much over the past few years, with their draft list actually being very on point with a wide selection of cheap to high quality beers. The service has been very meh, not great, but not bad by any means either. You certainly get differnt crowds of people at different times of the day, but there is nothing wrong with that. Long story short, dont expect the best service in the area, but there is some incredible food here if you're into the bar food type of scene. read more
