They kept on raising the rates on me . So finally I had enough of it. Our experience has been nothing short of frustrating and irresponsible on the company's part. When my parents and I initially contacted The Hartford to bundle their home and auto policies, the customer service was warm, responsive, and accommodating. However, when an issue arose, every representative we spoke to was dismissive, unhelpful, and, at times, outright rude. The Issue: We moved our home and auto policies to The Hartford after receiving a solicitation for lower rates, switching from State Farm after nearly 35 years. We bundled both policies and set up automatic payments of $390 per month. We reasonably assumed this amount covered both policies. However, in March 2025, we **accidentally** discovered that our **auto policy had been canceled three months earlier, in December 2024, due to non-payment**--without a single notice, call, email, or letter from The Hartford. We had been driving uninsured for three months without knowing. Unacceptable Customer Service & Lack of Notification: - No Notice of Cancellation: Despite being on autopay, we never received a single alert, statement, or notification that our payments were not covering both policies or that our auto insurance was at risk. - Refusal to Reinstate or Offer a New Policy: When I called to pay and reinstate the policy, I was informed that The Hartford does not reinstate policies canceled for non-payment--nor would they allow us to create a new one. - Rude & Unprofessional Treatment: When I requested proof of any missed payment notifications, I was met with condescension. The agent had no record of any letters or emails indicating that our policy was in default. - No Access to a Supervisor: When I escalated the matter, I was told that **supervisors do not take calls** and would have to call me back. I complied, but after 48 hours, no one reached out. - Failure to Follow Through: I called again, and a different agent submitted another request. Three more days passed--still no response. - Finally Reaching a Manager (After Multiple Calls & Delays): When I finally spoke with Jody M. from California, his response was dismissive, stating that we "should have logged into the website" to check for issues--despite the fact that our auto-payments were being processed and we received emails that **never indicated** a problem. I switched my auto insurance because of their misleading information that would lower our rate with no accidents and if you don't report your mileage every year to them for an additional discount especially after retiring and not driving car as much they still would not honor a change in our rate. My husband is a Vet and we went to USAA, way better rate pay a lot less. But when I called them they took my info over phone rep told me I would have a prorated check mailed and asked for an email along with new declaration page from new auto insurance. Did all that now we got a letter from a collection agency named Brown & Joseph, LLC TELLING ME TO SEND SAME INFO they will have someone review it in her department then they will forward to Hartford and they will make the determination. RE: Car and Homeowners Insurance I'm writing in hopes to get to the right person that could help me... I feel I've been treated unfairly and there is a lack of communication between the departments within The Hartford... Plus I thought AARP is here to help the seniors, are they not? Now put yourself in my shoes... Last year on July 4th, 2024 I purchased 1 year of car insurance. I paid in full what was quoted. I already have Homeowners Insurance with The Hartford. On July 8th, 2024 my house caught fire and it was a complete loss. We DO NOT live in any of the California fire line areas. The fire was considered an electrical fire in the attic by the fire department. It was terrible. It is now a year later and The DMV wanted proof of Car Insurance to renew my car registration. I thought that was odd as my car insurance wasn't due yet. I called The Hartford to pay another year in full in the beginning of July before the due date of July 4th, 2025. I then realised that I NEVER received a bill or policy renewal which I thought was also odd. The recording when I called and entered my information said they didn't see that I had a balance due on my policy. At this time it was after hours as I am located on the West Coast and am 3 hours behind the office hours. I then called the next day to talk to a live person, and was told my auto policy was $15 more than was quoted to me. OK. She said The Hartford billed me the $15 and the bill had been returned to The Hartford by the post office because the house was vacant. I was told that this had happened a few times. I had no knowledge of this... The Hartford cancelled my policy because of the returned bills. There were not even any phone calls that were made to collect the remaining $15. I had paid in full for 1 year what was quoted to me. Cancelled for $15? At the same time the call was made regarding my auto insurance I was told that my homeowners insurance was cancelled as well... WHAT?!?! WHY?!?!? I was then informed that it was cancelled due to the same reason... the bill was sent back due to the house being vacant... Just like that cancelled... Wow! Again put yourself in my shoes. We have been out of our house for over a year now. July 8th, 2024 at 10PM was when the house fire happened and on July 9th, is when the claim was made through The Hartford. We were told to talk to our adjuster who ended up being Caleb Prudholm that works for The Hartford. We have been in contact with him since he was assigned to our claim. We have had to move 3 times now throughout the year and are now going on our fourth move coming up on September 10th, 2025. No one contacted me in any way shape or form meaning no one did their homework and a lack of communication between departments. There should have been something listed when I called to make the claim. Everyone I had spoken to regarding the cancellations has been VERY rude. Even to the point of asking to speak to a supervisor and being told "No, I'm not going to do that. There is no one you can talk to". I was told that the company didn't know where I was at or how to contact me regarding billing so my policy was cancelled.NOT CORRECT!! I was told to work with Caleb and the lady Sara who was also the one who was not going to pass me to a supervisor said that the adjustor is an outside person. I don't know your chain of command but Caleb has known where I am and he works for The Hartford. Lack of communication is what it looks like to me. Again the information should be on file and in the computer... Again I do not live in any of the California fire line areas. The repairs on my house are about to get started and it is August 2025. I have called The Hartford many times about this and have been told I will NOT be reinstated, they do not want clients from California, no more new accounts from California due to the fires that happen every year. Not that they care as we all know insurance is a racket we must use but if you are shopping for small business insurance and happen to see this, you will be sorry if you use Hartford. Bait and switch must be an entire department there. We ended up paying 8k over their bid in a surprise that put incredible stress on our small business and we even had to let one of employees go. Angry of course, we shopped for a different insurance company and instead of saying they'd be sorry to see us go, they said we owed them 10% of the remaining term, to do nothing. I knew my renewal was coming up so I checked my insurance information to find that it expired on June 1 of this year. Therefore I called Hartford and ask them why I never got a renewal notification. She rattled off two dates in April and May but I never responded which is untrue. Never received not only those through the mail but not a phone call a text or an email from Hartford. I was informed they would reinstate me but from June 1 and today is July 15. I said why not start today and July 15 since I never received anything from you and I have not been insured for a month and a half and her response was well we would have to notify the DMV that you have not had insurance and I said who cares about that I never had a ticket or accident in that time or before that for 10 years. She said that's just how we do it here and I said no write up a new policy she says well we can't do that from here and pushed reinstatement which meant I paid Them $150 for free for not even doing their job and putting my finances in total jeopardy over the past month and a half. She said sorry I understand how you feel but that's how we got to do it here at Hartford. Well, I need to chime in here re: The Hartford for auto insurance ---- They not only raised my rate last year, during the pandemic, but I had two cars on my policy and donated one of them. So, you would expect that when I called to delete the donated car, that my rate would go down, right? WRONG!!!! Not only did they say it would not go down, but now they want to increase the premium by almost 18%!!! Their reasoning? Loss of a multi-car discount that is not even there in the first place --- unbelievable! I can not recommend The Hartford as an insurance option for either auto or home. The billing process and inconsistencies creates serious problems for customers. The customer base with the AARP / Hartford insurance is over 49 1/2; however, majority are 60+. my experience has been that folks want to trust the insurance company and they are sold a bill of goods. it almost could seem like the mature customer base is being taking advantage of. The billing is never the same. Random increases (only increases) happen mid term. notices are mailed however if that notice is missed the policy could go into cancellation. All for a policy increase that the customer did not initiate or have any knowledge of. the truelane app is a good bit of tech, but not designed to be user friendly and there is automatic billing changes that can happen, again without the customer knowing. the call center staff is mostly ok. but the training is insufficient for the type of work expected. customers are often left with no answer or without the ability to do something as fundamental as add a vehicle. Just because the commercials and the partnership with AARP express seemingly sincere regard for the customer base they service, does not meat the reality is that point at all. Look around before you sign off on The Hartford for insurance. Also do not be swayed by the over 200 year business model. simply because in that time they've figured out how to best get folks to buy into their horrible service and justify the fundamental absence of integrity read more

The Hartford (AARP Auto Insurance Program): I had been Harford customer for 6 years and things went well until I needed them the most. I had a major accident (car totaled but no injuries) - my first in 50 years of driving. During the course of addressing that accident, there were several issues I had with their assessment of the damage and claim and I had to fight for everything.  Here is one example (but there were many more) They charged me for the floor mats.  First Hartford said they were dirty.  I told the adjuster that they were never dirty before the accident - they got dirty from the tow driver, mechanics, etc., climbing in and out of my car.  Next thing, they sent me a report saying the floor mats were now missing!  Obviously if the mats were dirty and now were missing - since the car was in Hartford's possession at all times, I had nothing to do with mats going missing.  Eventually, they gave me the credit - but I had to fight for it. There were several more deductions that were ludicrous and petty, all of which took several phone calls, e-mails, etc. to finally get the credit for items that should never have been charged to me to begin with. Then, after being sent 3-4 assessments, when I was arguing another point and they agreed to give me credit, for the first time and all of a sudden, new damage appears elsewhere on the car, and they wouldn't give me credit on the other issue, calling it a "wash".  But they had previously sent me pictures that specifically said there was no damage to that area of the car!  Why didn't the first assessment note that damage, or the 2nd or the 3rd?  I concluded that this damage occurred while the car was in their possession. On and on and on, and around in circles.  I think, by now you get the idea. When my policy came up for renewal, they more than doubled my rates. When I complained, they sent me a link explaining why rates would increase. The link discussed driving habits; I primarily drive on surface streets & had one major accident in 50 years.  They certainly did not take 50 years of good driving into account when they more than doubled my rates! I was a loyal customer of Hartford for 6 years, but that didn't matter. The link mentioned the importance of taking credit reports into account; mine were 828 and 831!  No, I don't think Hartford took that into account, either. After the claim was finalized, and my policy was coming due for renewal, they had the nerve to send me an e-mail claiming that they "valued my business", and asking me to re-new (doubling the rates). When I needed my Insurance company the most - after 6 years of being a loyal customer, they certainly did not have my back. I cancelled the policy and will never go back. read more

We had The Hartford Insurance on home and autos. They raised our rates by 20% even though my family had no claims or tickets. We asked why through our local agent and to the Hartford directly. No answer. So we went with another agent and company and got a much lower rate for the same deductibles and coverage. I guess they thought I wouldn't notice the cost jump, or take time to comparison shop, or to be offended that they would not answer questions. Worker's Comp insurance through The Hartford is ridiculous! Spoke with an employee on why they are back charging me $1300+ for a policy I had a year ago. They said that upon audit, that one of my office employees went out to a job site to pick up a company vehicle and so his W.C. rate jumped up from clerical rate to electrician rate. The rate difference between the 2 was a whopping 8% more. Just because someone went to pick up a vehicle 1 time during the whole year under the policy, I got charged for a ridiculous amount. The employee at Hartford was not helping to resolve the situation and basically told me to go pound sand. Never use this company for any insurance policy!
