I was recommended The Harkness Hotel by a friend after telling him I wanted to take my husband to Lava Hot Springs for a little getaway. We usually stay right in Lava, but after looking up The Harkness, I knew immediately that we had to stay there instead, and I am so glad we did. This is hands down the swankiest hotel I've ever found in a small town. The décor is incredibly classy, the rooms are spotless, and the beds are the most comfortable I've ever slept in, and I've stayed in some pretty high-end hotels. The bedding and pillows were perfect. I usually bring my own pillow because hotel pillows are usually terrible, but I didn't need it here. Everything felt extremely clean and well cared for, and the rooms smell amazing (I don't know what they use, but it works). The bathroom was my absolute favorite--if I were to design my dream bathroom, this would be it. The tub easily fits two people, and the shower has dual rain shower heads. Pure luxury. They also provide complimentary toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion, and not the tiny bottles you get one use out of. They even include bath salts, which was such a nice touch. As others have mentioned, there's a pretty sweet coffee machine in the lobby. Don't skip it if you're a coffee drinker, you won't be disappointed. If you're planning a trip to Lava Hot Springs, stay here. Lava is only about 15 minutes down the highway, and it is 100% worth it. You will not regret it. read more

Absolutely lovely hotel. Staff was friendly, room was spacious and clean, and the little town is very cute. The coffee/cocoa/chai maker in the lobby was a hit with the kids and adults. They have a room with bunk beds that is great for families. Highly recommend. read more

Getting here was a rodeo! Delayed flights, heavy traffic, road construction, but when we finally arrived after a very, very long travel day, the Harkness was a welcome sight! The room was quiet and clean. The bed was incredibly comfortable. My only regret is that we didn't have the time we had planned for to fully enjoy it. read more

Our room was really cute and the bed was so comfortable! We love historical buildings, and this was so tastefully redone! We had all the comforts of home yet still felt like we were stepping back in time. We were only there to sleep--had dinner before arriving and just grabbed coffee on the way out. There was a full kitchen in our room but we didn't use it. read more

What a great end to our vacation to Yellowstone and the Garden Tetons. Just 10 minutes from Lava Hot Springs where we went to enjoy some hot pools. We all agreed this was our favorite place to stay. Very roomy even for a family of 6 like ours. Bunk beds for the kids and separate room for the parents. We plan on coming back in the future and will definitely stay here again! read more

We were looking for a place to stay during our visit to Lava Hot Springs and stumbled upon this gem just located 10 minutes from the actual springs. Wow! The lobby is so beautiful, and as guests we were treated with respect and courtesy. The building was constructed in the early 1900s and only renovated a few years ago into what is now the Harkness Hotel. We stayed in the Pearl which is considered the most luxury hotel room in the building. The rustic, classic feel of the architecture is maintained but with some modern upgrades: elegant and functional plumbing, appliances, electronics, and furniture. We absolutely love the high ceilings and the wood floors. Kitchen is well stocked with enough items to cook decent meals. Amenities downstairs (coffee / hot chocolate / tea machine, ice and filtered water dispenser) were an excellent touch to the hospitality. Only issues I found were that the wood floors, despite having been restored extremely well, will leave splinters in your foot if you're not careful. The wireless can also be spotty and not give you access even if you provide the right password. Despite these issues, a top tier boutique hotel that is only 15 min from Lava Hot Springs (so awesome) read more

The Harkness is a beautiful, memorable and quaint hotel that completely masters being both homey yet luxurious. I visited with my boyfriend for our anniversary. There is no night staff, so we had to text when we were about 30 minutes out so that someone would be there (we were arriving late, around 9). Some other reviewers said it was a nuisance to text, but it's a very small inconvenience (if that) and I don't see it being much different than letting a family member know you're on the way if you're staying at their home. We LOVED the atmosphere and attention to detail in the design of the hotel. It's small - I think just 10 rooms or less - and each room is unique and different. We stayed in the gold room. We absolutely loved the tall ceilings, antique armoire, large shower, authentic hardwood floors, and the cozy and comfortable bedding. The area and building is quiet (I imagine those walls are pretty thick) so we had some of the best sleep in months! We also loved the coffee maker in the lobby - it made espresso, hot chocolate, mochas, lattes...so convenient! Running down for a hot chocolate on a 18 degree evening is just sooo nice. And of course, being just 10 minutes from Lava was great - I would say McCammon is much quieter/sleepier, so perfect for a couple's retreat versus a wild ladies weekend, for example. My single, only gripe: lack of masks and face coverings. Staff was not wearing a mask, ever. I'm still giving The Harkness 5 stars though because pretty much all businesses and restaurants in the area weren't enforcing any mask wearing, restrictions, etc., so I imagine it would be a similar if not identical experience at any other hotel in the area. I would have tried to book a massage or spa treatment but didn't feel confident in their COVID-19 precautions. I think they should keep that in mind, since many people are travelling from SLC and other areas where mask-wearing is commonplace, if not expected. But if that's going to bother you, just keep in mind to expect that anywhere you go in the McCammon/Lava area. Despite this, I found the rooms to be immaculate, clean, and smelling good. I cannot wait to go back! A memorable, unique, and luxurious experience. read more

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! This adorable boutique hotel was perfect. We were running a little late and we're going to miss the 7pm checkin deadline, but Shari waited for us to get here. Once here, we were blown away. We received an actually key to our room, mini fridge kept everything icy cold, beds and bedding were perfect. FREE coffee in the lobby. Not basic coffee, 13 different varieties. Staff was incredibly friendly. I will definitely be back. Soon. read more

Found this by accident when looking for a place in southern Idaho. I've stayed in small town hotels before and they usually are adequate at best. This was a wonderful surprise. Stayed here for my birthday night with my girlfriend on our day trip to lava hot springs. The hotel is a tastefully renovated old building in the smallest town that I've ever spent a night in! It feels slightly out of place in the town but makes up for it in spades by providing a unique and peaceful option for those not keen on dingy motels. If you're used to staying in classy expensive hotels, you will feel right at home, while also preserving a heavier wallet than in most hotels of this caliber. It has very clean rooms, a quiet environment day and night, and probably the nicest (double head) shower I've ever experienced in a hotel room. Staff was friendly yet quiet (perfect), and even left a special treat and card for my birthday. That extra touch was completely unexpected but definitely scored some bonus points in our experience overall. We also enjoyed being close enough to the hot springs (10min drive) while also closer to a bigger town with less touristy restaurant options than Lava. The only luxury we really missed being in such a small town was having a quality coffee shop nearby, though the Harkness does have an automatic coffee machine with many options, which puts out way better tasting coffee than the average single serve coffee makers in most hotel rooms. Overall no regrets staying here and hope to be back in the future! read more

A friend recommended this place, and we wanted to visit Lava Hot Springs, so this made sense. The place is absolutely lovely! The exterior is beautiful, with the building being over 100 years old. The interior is wonderfully renovated. We were in the Indigo room. I always worry about staying in old buildings, but there are none of the issues that usually occur (no creaky floors or paper thin doors). The floors in the room are wood and tile, so my wife recommends bringing slippers if you get cold feet. The bed was firm, but was really comfortable. The shower and tub in the room are the kind I wanted to hang out in for a while. The twin shower heads in the shower are especially wonderful. I highly recommend this place! The other great element of the hotel is that it is only 15 minutes from Lava Hot Springs, and around 30 minutes from Pocatello. We went to the Lava Zipline Adventures on the first day (it was amazing, and terrifying), and then did all of the river running and hot springs in Lava the next day. The town of Mcammon doesn't have much, but Lava was amazing. This was our 18th anniversary, so all of this was awesome for two adults, but would also be fun for our family, which we are planning to bring back soon. read more

Thought it was OK. Probably wouldn't stay there again. Room looked nice and clean, flat screen TV on wall, nice shower, etc. etc. Creaky wooden floors gave it some old worldy charm I guess but also gets annoying to listen to. They just updated an old building, in this case a bank. You can see the old vault down in the lobby. I found it a bit annoying to have to let them know when I would arrive so someone can be there to check me in. As one reviewer stated, they don't have staff on site at night which I see as pretty unacceptable. There is ZERO to do in the area. It's like a ghost town of nothingness and the amount of guests in this hotel reflected that. Came through there only to go to Lava Hot Springs. If the hotel was in some cool city, I'd give it more stars. I wonder how many people use the Spa/Salon where the prices on the menu are quite exorbitant? Anyway, sorry not sorry. It was just OK. read more

Wow. Maybe the most tastefully put-together hotel I've ever stayed in. The friend who dropped me off asked me to find out who the decorator was! (It's the owner, and they outdid themselves). I was lucky to score an open room on a Sunday night and was put up in the Slate. Let me say I had the best shower I have had in my entire life there. Not just because I had just finished a week of camping, either (though that helped). Sometimes even fancy-ish or wannabe fancy places with beautiful showers don't have the right plumbing in play to support the fancy shower heads. The water pressure was steady and amazing whether I was using the broad rainfall showerhead feature or the normal shower, AND there's a gorgeous soaking tub. Simple microwave and mini fridge. Lots of lighting options. And they had my heart when I discovered a space heater I happily used to make a jungle environment in the shower room with (no cold feet after). Even the shower door was cool. Both Ashley at the front desk and the owner Aaron were extremely helpful on my trip, I feel lucky to say. Every surface and texture is a pleasure on the eyes. Tv was great. Town is quiet. There's a playground down the street by a rodeo ring if you turn right out of the main lobby entrance. Even real keys were refreshing. Feels better than a card to me. Oh yeah bed was comfortable. Very fluffy and plentiful pillows. No complaints here. There are only so many rooms so book ahead! read more

To be clear, the hotel itself is cute and quaint. We will stay there again. The 3-star review is specific to the room we were in... next time we will try another room. So when booking the hotel, I looked into other reviews and unanimously people said no room was better than others. So we booked one called The Ebony. When going into the room, it was nice, clean and super cute! We settled in and headed out for a night in lava hot springs. When we got back to the hotel, it was dark and we tried to close the blinds for privacy. The windows only had a small piece of fabric tied back. (Form over function). When we untied the fabric and it didn't cover the entire window. So we had to keep the lights off. Then when it was time to go to sleep, the window covers continued to be terrible. The windows open up to the Main Street and gas station across the street. The street lights were bright and made it difficult to sleep all night. On top of that, the nearby train was very loud. We did not sleep well. From the looks of it, all the other rooms have actual blinds and they sit at the back of the hotel (a bit removed from the noise of the trains). I would not recommend the room we were in. read more

On an over night trip to visit the Lava Hot Springs . Service was good and room was clean with nice decor. Housekeeper only left conditioner on the counter but everything else was well prepared. Great kitchen and living spaces with historical wall art that was a great touch! A hidden gem, work in progress. The rooms are amazing and spacious. It's like having your own apartment! The decor is so gorgeous, I've taken pics to mimic how to decorate mine when I get home ;) The pillows and blankets are extremely soft and comfortable. And the staff, the main guy who owns the place, is super down to earth and welcoming. I stumbled upon this place because I was tired after a 13 hour drive. The next set of hotels was 2 hours one way, or 30 mins the other way up a steep grade. No thanks. I got the smallest, cheapest room here. But it is not cheap or small, at all. Free wifi. Free unlimited bottles of water. And free access to the lobby area where they have a machine with several different options of coffee and/or tea. I gave 4 stars just because of the location, in the middle of nowhere, no food options (but gas station and small cafe across the street), no pool or gym, and half the building is still under construction. This place was all I needed for the night, and more. Definitely recommend. read more

First of all who would have thought a swanky suuuper cute hotel would be in a town without even a stop light (or at least I didn't see one) population 805. Seriously, it's basically a village. We booked the Ivory Room and it was so pretty. No detail was skipped. The bed was really comfy, the stand alone tub was awesome and deep! It actually was big enough to cover all of your body with water which is a challenge sometimes. This tub was not a shallow one at all. The shower was remarkable. The rain shower head on the ceiling was the biggest shower head I've ever seen or showered under. Even the customary hotel shampoo/conditioner, body wash, and lotion was exceptional. I'm actually looking to buy some, it's that amazing. Now, the only thing that was wrong with the room and the reason for the 4 stars was the air conditioning. It was a wall unit way up on the ceiling (maybe 12ft ceilings?) definitely not able to reach. The remote had more buttons and modes than the tv remote but still I couldn't get it to turn on. I think of myself as an intelligent person however, not this time. My boyfriend is a well educated doctor and he couldn't get it to work either. And it was warm! The gal from the front desk called the hotel owner and he said that unit is "tied" to the unit in the Slate room next door. Wait what?! So if that room is using their unit we couldn't use ours. I can't understand why you renovate a hotel into this amazing place and fall flat on the AC. If that was fixed it would have been virtually perfect. All in all, I'd still stay at this hotel with the hope I could give a new review with working AC. It really is a beautiful location with so much character. read more

Wonderful boutique hotel that we stumbled upon when trying to find somewhere other than a chain to stay at on our Yellowstone/Teton road trip. Elegant finishes that felt especially luxurious after camping! I "needed" some crystal chandeliers and a soaking tub and felt completely relaxed and spoiled. Cute town with what looked like lots of dining choices. This hotel will be on our must stay if we are ever in the area again! read more

My fiance and i had a blast here. We called in and asked if they had anything available and they set us right up. There isn't a hot tub or pool. However, The rooms are gorgeous and so cozy. It is very clean and has a very nice rustic look to the building. They have a small breakfast bar in the lobby;its nice to have unlimited access to it. I loved the fact that there are an assortment of different teas and coffees. It was very nice having one day to just get out of the house and relax. Also, just to throw it in here..usually we always bring our own shower gels because most hotels have harsh little sample bottles. However, these ones here were very good smelling and made our hair unbelievably soft. I would recommend this if you're looking for a quite and personal experience. lovely! read more

My friends and I were looking for a place to stay over my birthday weekend near the lava hot springs in Idaho. All of the places looked at were cheesy themed style hotels or run down motels. So you can imagine my relief when we found pictures of the Harkness and could not believe this diamond in the rough. The photos online do not do this place justice the rooms were spacious, beds were comfortable and had all the amenities of home. The kitchens were clean modern easy to use and we saved a ton cooking our own meals. The owner was friendly helpful highly intelligent and gave us the history of this place. The soaps were fine smelling and the shower had excellent pressure and heat. The place was super clean.Oh did I mention it's one the most charming modern and beautifully appointed hotels you could possible imagine. We absolutely love love love this hotel!! By far the nicest hotel in the area... by leaps and bounds. Lava Hot Springs is less then a 10 minute drive away, and trust me, its totally worth the drive to stay here over anywhere in Lava!! The hotel is family owned and operated and the owners are wonderful. They will take time to speak to you if asked, tell you about the history of the hotel, give you a tour, and tell you how they came to this tiny town and decided to turn this old building into a beautiful boutique hotel! I can not say enough good things about this place. I wanted to move in permanently!! They have turned this old building into the most beautiful structure again, while keeping so much of its original charm and features. And they have done an amazing job! Since moving to UT in 2012 I have been searching for a non-chain hotel as nice as this one, and I finally found it in Idaho! The hotel has been opened less then 2 years, so there is still a lot of renovating going on, but it is not in the area of any of the guest rooms and/or the lobby, you could say the changes are going on behind the scenes, so they in no way effect your stay at all. The building is so quiet that even on the weekend while we were there, and the hotel was completely booked, we felt like we had the whole building to ourselves because it was that quiet. Which was wonderful, especially being the parents of toddlers and this being our 1st weekend away! Our room was super comfortable. We stayed in the Pearl Suite. It came with a full kitchen, little dinning area, living room with a gas fireplace, bedroom, and bathroom. It was very spacious.... it was HUGE! The kitchen had everything we needed to make our breakfast and our lunch in the room and we ate out for dinner. Everything was super clean too!! The lobby is so beautiful and has a wonderful Italian made Super Automatic Espresso Machine which makes hot chocolate, chi tea, coffee, lattes, and of course espresso. They were so delicious, I tried almost all of them. They also keep a mini fridge in the lobby full of cold bottled waters, all complimentary. We are looking forward to our next stay at The Harkness Hotel and seeing the upcoming changes as this hotel continues its renovations and growth. We are also recommending this hotel to anyone that will listen!! Thank you for a wonderful stay!! read more
