**Update: Because I left a negative review, The Gym Downtown decided to forcefully cancel my membership. They stopped me in the middle of a workout and made me leave. Honestly, I was happy to be done with them, and it just goes to show what kind of business it is. Rather than facing the issues, or maybe offering an apology, they bury their head in the sand. Please read on for my original review, and take note of the photos.**
I've been hesitating to write this review, but seeing as though members are finally speaking out, here we go....
The facility is run down. The equipment (especially cardio and cable machines) are regularly inoperable and all are in desperate need of service, notably lubing some of the guide rods on the machines. The AC has been out for about 2 weeks. Also, lately there hasn't been running water on and off throughout the month.
There are easily-repairable holes in the walls, a number of broken mirrors throughout the weight area and group x room, the metal tracking on the floor, which I had tripped over, has luckily been removed, but watch out for the large bubble in the rubber flooring by the water fountain, it'll get ya. The floors in general are dusty, and the concrete foundation under the flooring needs re-leveled as there are noticeable dips in the carpeted floor. Too many cardio machines in general, many of which do not have the required open space behind them to be handicap accessible.
The bathrooms? One of those situations where you may as well not bother washing your hands afterwards. I actually saw the owner running out of the men's room a while back saying "WE ARE GOING TO NEED MORE DRAINO!". Major plumbing problems here.
I've mentioned these drawbacks, and many more, to a number of the employees here. All but one or two gave me the recited "Rocky is aware of the problems and apologizes. He is working on finding someone to come out but it's going to take time." garbage with mild attitude. I've worked in a number of gyms before, and my boyfriend has been the GM of both big box and individually owned facilities and I can tell you that what's going on here is lazy, incompetent management who is unwilling/unable to spend the money required to properly maintain this place.
Above all, when he's actually there, the owner parks in the only handicap spot out front though there's no evidence of a handicap decal.
I wouldn't recommend this gym to a friend, but will likely maintain my membership, until something better opens nearby, for the absence of crowds and price point. read more
