Rounds were barely ever done, hours went by and nobody would come in to reposition or check his pain. We would constantly have to go out and ask, sometimes they couldn't find or see the orders for the medications that we knew were already acknowledged and approved by the hospice team. They weren't proactive about his constant fevers unless brought up by us. My grandfather was very fortune to have family by his side around the clock to advocate for him.But it's terrifying for any patient that can't communicate or advocate for themselves. We had about 3 good nurses, one aide in particular always had an attitude when being asked for help.

Unfortunately, our experience there was very difficult. The memory care unit is rundown and always had an unpleasant smell. My dad frequently expressed that he did not feel well cared for, and during visits, he often looked unwell and not like himself. The overall impression we had was that care was inconsistent. Food quality was also a concern. Meals often appeared the same day to day and were not very appealing. We also had concerns about his medications and felt there may have been periods where he was overly sedated, although we cannot confirm that. Communication was another major challenge. It was often difficult to reach staff by phone, and responses were inconsistent. When we began searching for a different facility, we did not receive any assistance, even after multiple requests for help finding Medicaid-accepting options, and ultimately had to do all of the research ourselves. That said, we understand how demanding caregiving work is and that staff are likely overworked. However, we feel strongly that elderly residents deserve consistent, compassionate, and attentive care. Once we were able to move my dad to another facility, we saw a significant and immediate improvement in his condition and overall well-being.

I looked at a lot of places before choosing this Assisted Living for my biological father and his…read morewife. I have read so many terrible things about how the elderly are treated in these kinds of places and thus I was really worried, especially when I left them there and moved home to California. During the pandemic, and even up until today, Alexian Village has a very high level of staff turnover at all levels, which usually indicates a management issue. However, I don't know the real cause. But as my "parents" have now been there for months, I've noticed that most of the people who serve them seem to be decent people who really care about the elders in their facility. Especially Helen at the front desk, who is a remarkable, wonderful person they are so lucky to have! (Beware of the other front desk woman, though. She seems to hate everyone and everything!) I've also learned that the dire situations my parents report are often not so accurate when I actually investigate what's happening. I am learning to give Alexian Village much more of the benefit of a doubt in these situations. They are, after all, doing a job I was no longer capable of doing myself. The ideal of course in an AL is that your relative is supremely happy, relieved and delighted. That's not likely to happen, no matter how angelic your loved ones are or are not. (That's a new realization for me!) Moving into an AL means that the party is coming to an end, and that's got to be hard for any elder to accept. Now that I have less concern about mistreatment, lack of food, lack of services, mean staff, stolen items, stolen clothing, unavailable healthcare and all the other things mine have complained about, I see that a lot of the drama is really just their unhappiness to be in AL in the first place. I believe Alexian Village is doing the best they can under the difficult circumstances made more difficult by the pandemic. It's irrational to expect this to be easy on your elders or yourself. It just won't be. Breathe. PS - There's one very bad review here, with one star. It talks about how often they change her mom's diaper. I think that poster is messed up, because Alexian V. is an assisted living, not a nursing home. Only nursing homes provide that level of nursing care. She may have posted in the wrong place?

After spending many months researching Supportive Living facilities in the Suburban Chicago area…read morefor our Mom we came upon Alexian Village of Elk Grove. We needed to move her from a place that we weren't very pleased with. With that in mind, we knew what we were looking for. From the first meeting we were very pleased with the atmosphere, the courteous, understanding staff and the very efficiently run community. They were very caring, concerned and sympathetic to the needs of our Mom. We knew right then that this was the place for her. Everyone there made the transition a smooth, painless experience for both Mom and us. This can be such a stressful and emotional time. We want to personally thank Gus, Maria, Kelsey and Helen for being so kind, understanding and professional guiding us through the process. While Mom is still adjusting to her new environment, we are so very pleased with the level of care and understanding she is receiving from the staff. We couldn't be more pleased with seeing her adjusting well and getting acclimated. Visiting has now become a very pleasurable experience.
