AMAZING!!! As far as I remember this place has won pub food…read moreof the year ever year since Ive lived in the area. Super tasty quality food, I noticed that on the menu it even tells you which farm the meat came from, or where the ice cream was made etc. The Greek Lamb and the Gammon are both brilliant. The portions are huge and I'm always left with enough food for another meal but save room for the Holly Bush sundae because you wont ever have a such a selection of tasty locally made ice cream :) The prices are great too, last time I went it was around 30quid for the 2 of us.

The service was first class, staff very friendly and the food was excellent. Update: 27/11/14…read more Given that it was a Wednesday and no good weather the place was nearly full. The point of the update is that two colleagues and me went to use the vouchers from previous visits. I held 9 vouchers. 6 vouchers gives £12 of the bill. No problem. I mentioned that the other 3 expired 30/11/14. Not another problem, swapped for 3 that expire November 2015. Plus 2 more for the meals that had been paid for.... So, 5 new vouchers.... That's service..... and guarantees my return. 27/5/14 OK. They get their star back. Wife loved the place. The kids enjoyed their food too. Service was good. Had a slight problem getting to the place by taxi, as the driver didn't have the post code. I tried to ring the restaurant on the number they rang me back on earlier in the day. No answer. Eventually got to the place. BUT - IS THEIR PHONE FOR OUTGOING CALLS ONLY? OTHERWISE, ANSWER THE FLIPPING PHONE. The Bill was as follows: 3 x small Pepsi - £5.40 1 175ml - House White (Sauvignon Blanc) - £4.30 1 pint of Shropshire Gold - £3.70 1 Pate - £5.95 2 Seared wood pigeon starters (my 10 yo enjoyed) - £13.90 1 Crispy squid starter (my 12 yo daughter) - £6.95 Mains 1 Fish cakes - £10.95 1 Burger - £11.95 1 Children's haddock - £7.95 1 Lamb shoulder - £17.25 1 Bottle of (no. 49) Shiraz - £19.95 Total - £108.25 --------------------------------- Visiting again ..... You tried to call us during lunchtime.... Did I, at 3 pm! So that's the reason not to take bookings.... I explained the time I wanted was greyed out - they said that's was because it isn't available.... I said I just wanted to check..... I told them the time, and they sad....no problem.....If places playback their conversations, do they still believe it makes sense? Look I'm dropping a star, and quite frankly I wouldn't have tried so hard, but I previously raved about the place, so my wife wanted to go. I had the same starter. The rump steak for the main (£17.95). Lovely and succulent. Nice chips and mushrooms. Pint of Shropshire Gold: £3.70, and large glass of Shiraz: £6.70. The place wasn't busy, as I have heard it can be. I'm letting them keep their 5 stars, but if when I visit again and find them slow to get the drinks to the table, and slow to get to the table for us to pay, when they have already delivered the bill, then I might drop a star. There are enough staff available to cope. The staff are very pleasant when serving, and visiting the table. --------------------- I couldn't fault the place. A colleague introduced me to the delights of the place. Superb selection of starters. Fantastic lamb shoulder, falling off the bone. Starter: Seared wood pigeon, black pudding and roast mushroom with a game reduction £6.95 Main: Lamb shoulder - £17.25 Also had a pint of Shropshire Gold - £3.70, and 175 ml of Percheron Shiraz/Mourvedre, South Africa - £4.60 I was too stuffed to have a pudding. The Boat is afloat !!…read more Nestled right up alongside the River Dee and recently reopened, the Boat has lost none of its charm or ambiance. I like the fact that they support the community around the area by buying their Beer and Produce locally whenever possible. Records date an Alehouse here right back to the 13th century and the interior decor reflects how the building has grown through the centuries.Lots of Oak beams and stone floors add buckets of character. You can choose one of the quiet corners for privacy or park up in one of the larger open areas and banter away or, weather permitting, take a table outside. Called in for lunch the other day and the menu, although not extensive, has everything for feeding all tastes from a wake-up morning coffee (open at 11am) to a refreshing pint of ale and home baked pie, or spend an easy evening with a fondue and some warm torn bread washed down with a pint of locally brewed traditional free house Cask Ale. They also have an excellent choice of Wines should you fancy a change. Once you have had your fill then ease down that food and drink by taking a riverside country walk!! The scenery is stunning. The great thing about 'The Boat' is that is a place for all seasons. When the weather is warm you can sit alongside the river and watch folk fishing for Trout, Salmon and Eel and may even catch a glimpse of the Otters who live on the opposite bank. When colder weather arrives you walk through the door to be welcomed by open log fires, and feel like you are home. Turning up here on a snowy Winters afternoon is a Dickensian delight. And what a lucky day for us! Charming snug of a place, the open fires, low ceilings and original beams transport you back to a simpler time. The staff is wonderfully warm and welcoming, with excellent food to back it up. A combination of traditional pub food and higher-end "gastro-pub" fare, you really can't go wrong here. And the portions are impressive-- beware if you're ordering a starter and main. You may not have room for their excellent desserts! Ample seating inside and out-- can't wait for warmer weather to sit outside at the picnic tables alongside the River Dee. The best inside seating is in the original building as opposed to the more modern conservatory (though it depends on your taste). Bookings are not necessary, but if you want a seat by the fire, definitely call ahead!

Don't expect a very quiet country pub as beer garden is next to the west coast main line. If you like trains thundering past you at over 100mph then that won't be a problem. That said the beer garden is rather attractive, not so large you can't keep an eye on the kids, but big enough that they can do their own thing. The mill building has laods of character, they explain the history of it on their website. Food and drink is solidly good, and can find no fault with it.

The waitresses and waiters are also very polite and attentive. Food wise... the quality is wonderful. Its not cheap but if you want cheap crap go to the brewers fayre over the road.

It is at the edge of Cannock Chase and if you sit on the far side of the pub by the window you can see for miles. The name comes from the old windmill in the grounds across the bowling green. In the winter it is lovely sitting by the roaring fire. There is a bar, lounge and upstairs restaurant. Sunday lunch is excellent with a good choice of meat. You can also order off the menu. The fish and chips are massive and amazing with crispy batter. Never had a bad meal here just sometimes they go over the top with peas but if you love them it's fine. They do good bread and butter pudding with custard. They also do real ale.
