The highlight of our visit was our server, Jake. His recommendations were spot-on. He checked on us throughout the meal without ever being overbearing. Appetizers: Spicy Tuna Nachos (with the crab salad and avocado add-on. This was Jake's recommendation) This was hands-down our favorite appetizer. The crab salad and avocado are a must. Everything paired perfectly together, especially with a dash of soy sauce. Kickin' Shrimp with Bread. The shrimp was flavorful and cooked perfectly. The only small suggestion would be to serve the bread in smaller pieces, making it easier to share. Entrees: Loco Moco - 8.5/10: Great flavor and cooked well. The only thing that would have made it even better would be adding some vegetables on the side. Blackened Grouper Fish Tacos - 10/10: Absolutely amazing! The grouper was fresh and not overly fishy, and the mango salsa added the perfect touch of sweetness and saltiness. The flavors were balanced. I'd order these again. Paradise Signature Sushi Roll: Another great addition to our meal. Overall, Hula Bay delivered on every level. We had great food, a welcoming atmosphere, and amazing service from Jake. Highly recommend.

That request should have been clearly seen and followed. Instead, spicy mayo was put all over the sushi, and there wasn't even a container or lid to keep it on the side. The entire order was essentially contaminated with something I explicitly asked not to have. I absolutely hate spicy mayo, which is why I specifically requested none. And on top of that, lemons do not belong on sushi. The combination completely ruined the meal. The sushi was also expensive, making this experience even more disappointing. This was by far the worst sushi I have ever had. I will absolutely not be ordering from here again.

My ONLY criticism is sometimes the music can be a little too loud for conversation, but this isn't always so. I'm a cocktail geek and have made multiple trips to The Aviary in Chicago. Believe me, The Aviary has nothing on the Tanto bar program. Cocktails are unique, creative, and delicious. Food was amazing, whether omakase or á la carte. Staff is attentive, fun and playful. Think the savoriness of a Bloody Mary but without tomatoes. Hard to describe but don't miss it! Other highlights include Opposite Day, Memory in Bloom, and Three Way. Season of Again pairs beautifully with the oysters. I hate to say I have a favorite restaurant, because I choose different places for differing needs, but Tanto has won my heart and tastebuds.

I choose the cocktail called Opposite Day- Japanese whiskey, sweet Sauvignon Blanc, salted wine and roasted beets- twist on a whiskey sour but flipped! Oysters were light and fresh and the juice in the shell was precision clean. It really pops the flavors of the oyster. Yellowtail jalapeño handroll- it is designed to be eaten similar to a taco. The yellowtail was superbly fresh, the jalapeno was a mild touch to accompany the dish and didn't try to be the star. and the homemade soy sauce didn't over power the fish. Duck leg finished with a Szechuan spice and finished a pear au jus. The duck fell off the bone and was bursting with a complex blend of elegant flavors. The sangria was light and refreshing, not overly sweet like how other white wine sangrias can be. I like how they added berries in it to add a decorative touch. The palmer was well-balanced and more citrus-y than it was fruity. Also pretty refreshing for a hot day. I've noticed in general that most of the drinks here are mixed well; they don't err on being too sweet or too strong, just well-balanced with the flavors not trying hard to dominate one another in the drinks.
