We are so very impressed with Pac Rim. We left Cardiff, a neighboring district that is just as…read morewonderful, after 15 years with our other kids and our youngest had to switch elementary schools when we bought our new house. They were welcoming right off the bat. Mr. Tubbs set up a walk through tour before we decided to buy and his first teacher made him feel so welcome with notes on his desk from every child in the class once we did. COVID hit and he had little opportunity to really connect with new friends, but Carlsbad District has maintained getting these kids safely into in-person class as quickly as possible from the beginning. Mrs. Hartman has seen him through this incredibly confusing year (from at home learning to cohort half in and half out learning to full time all kids in class learning). Kudos to a teacher who successfully navigated all the changes for her kids impeccably, softly and efficiently. He says although he misses his friends, whom are still only 10 minutes away :), he is so glad he made the move. He feels welcomed, comfortable, challenged and accomplished. Pacific Rim is a "California distinguished school": "A California Distinguished School is an award given by the California State Board of Education to public schools within the state that best represent exemplary and quality educational programs. Approximately five percent of California schools are awarded this honor each year following a selection process."---via Wikipedia. I attribute much of what we love about this school to their wonderful principal, Robert Devich. It's the trickle down effect. This principal has ZERO tolerance for bullying. He enforces the rules here with strength, a love of truth, wisdom and compassion. This man is a loving father in his own life and brings that same level of warmth and accessibility to each of the students. He's a very visible presence on campus and coaches the kids (who need extra help) in math during certain lunch times. The caliber of teachers here is terrific. No disgruntled lifers simply treading water until retirement. They have special side programs designed for the kids at every grade level. These teachers are enthusiastic and dedicated to the kids. Some of them even arrive to school early (every single day) to answer homework questions for their students. Unlike the two other (San Diego) elementary schools our children attended, Pacific Rim's outdoor lunch court is sheltered from the elements with protective patio curtains on all sides as well as a roof overhead. from passing birds. This lunch table set up comes in particularly handy on windy or drizzly days. The kids can eat in comfort and their tables are protected from any possibility of insects as well as from droppings of local birds. Workers scrub off and disinfect every single lunch table at the end of each lunchtime. This school boasts excellent test scores. Their carnivals, numerous special events and family night events (tented sleep overs in the game field) are fun for everyone.

Our son started going to OPE after beginning in another elementary school in Encinitas in 2nd grade. We thought he was doing pretty well in the other school but after he transferred, we started seeing C's and D's instead of his previous B's. He was also seemingly unable to control his talking in the new environment, so we had him assessed and placed on a prescription and provided IEP support. Fast forward to 6th grade, and he is back on track with A's and B's and even getting recommendations to take honor classes next year in Middle School. I whole heartedly recommend this school. They have great teachers with high standards, amazing IEP staff to play catch up with students that need it, and their counselor Chastity is so wonderfully involved and truly cares about these kids with her whole heart. So thankful that we moved to Olivenhain in time to correct the course of our child!

Each grade offers children to work at their own pace, and children can learn curriculum in reading/math up to two grades above each grade they're in without a competitive feel between the children. NO IPADS which is amazing since all public schools use that now as a learning tool and I'd rather my daughter not learn via tapping her finger on a screen. There is an intentional effort to have healthier food options at events, ordered school lunches, birthdays in class, aftercare snacks, but there is also no judgement amongst parents or between admin and parents. They offer extracurricular classes for kids in TK and beyond. My daughter does keyboard and dance once a week after school, and it's really nice, she just stays an extra half hour and I pick her up when it's done, and she LOVES them. The aftercare program has been amazing compared to the other Montessori we went to prior to ECDS. We absolutely love our teachers this year, along with the extracurricular teachers we've met. Ms. Hayes is the new principal but has worked at the school for over 10-15 years, and she is just wonderful, caring, dedicated, and knowledgeable. It's a really good feeling as a parent to have the principal and teachers open and welcoming of communication, and allowing us to be involved with our child's experience at school. In all, I feel that Bishop's (where I graduated) and La Jolla Country Day School (which I attended for junior high school) are the two best private schools in town. A Bishop's education unlocks the doors to a superior college education (coming from Bishop's, I was accepted at every college I applied to, including Harvard, Amherst College (which I attended), Brown, Dartmouth, Univ. of Pennsylvania, Princeton and U.C.S.D. My calculus book that I used at Bishop's was the same I used (at a higher level in college, of course) at Amherst College. Today, at Bishop's students have all the usual liberal arts classes - chemistry, biology, physics,math up to and including Advanced Placement AB and BC Calculus, English, history, art history, music, voice, studio art, painting, pottery, and languages (Today they may choose Chinese in addition to the usual Spanish, French, Latin), but nowadays they have advanced computer classes, even virtual reality programming classes. Bishop's prepares you for Advanced Placement (AP) classes - I took and receives 5s (the highest score possible) in seven subjects, and they also have International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. These classes give you college credit and may allow you to skip your freshman year in college. Bishop's produces National Merit Scholars (I was one) and semifinalists regularly. The atmosphere is positive, liberal, free spirited and serious, all at once. Students are prepared at a minimum for college (even at a place like Amherst College I was still a better writer than anyone in my college class), but also for success in life in general by teaching or instilling values of education, ethics, patience, healthy competitiveness, ambition, etiquette and much more. Seniors enjoy their own special "rec room" that they paint each year in a lively fashion. A yearly tradition is the theft and hiding by the junior class of the senior bench which is on the lawn in front of the rec room. Class spirit is encouraged with class mascots and division of each class into the Mighty Golds (I was one) and the Royal Purples. Although Bishop's is technically Episcopalian, and we do attend chapel weekly, all faiths are embraced and the chaplain himself often speaks privately to students who are not Christian, such as Muslims, exchanging religious views with them. If you'd like your child to enjoy one of the best high school educations money may buy, consider Bishop's. Bishop's is now 6th through 12th grades. My child was severely physically, mentally & verbally bullied at this school in KINDERGARTEN. A few…read moreexamples: his teacher at circle time (everyone sitting down) made my son stand up and reprimanded him for something he did in line outside before coming in. I personally witnessed him physically pushed to the ground and punched by a group of kids, the yard teacher said " what did you do to make them hurt you?". He came home with scratches so bad on his body that he thought he had a sunburn. I told the principal and there was no action, only offered a school councilor "three times a week" for my KINDERGARTNER. This is just the tip of the iceberg for how incredibly awful this school, its leadership & the faculty were. I moved him schools & he has been doing amazing ever since. DO NOT put your child in this school. I don't have enough words to express on here how much of a genuine nightmare it was, and this experience set my son up to hate & resent school, created a deep sense of self hatred & self consciousness that has stuck with him. BEWARE, this is not a no-tolerance or safe space for children to learn in.
