As an American craft beer evangelist and abuser at times, this was a wonderful surprise coming to Newcastle (or Australia for that matter) for the first time. Great beer, wonderful food and most importantly gracious and fantastic staff.

The Grain Store has a connection to the Tooheys folks. Figures right? Grains and the family biz? Okay by me.

Loved the Grain Store. They have one of the best selections of American bar food. I mean that as a compliment. Great selection of starters and mains. I had the chili chicken tenders and chips. OMG. The chicken was tasty and the chili was juuuuust right! Nicely Prepared and presented. The chips were fresh and hot. The burgers looked good as did the chorizo pizza! The bar is old school and the tables and cozy chairs are all period and jibe nicely with the decor. Get there early, the place fills up and stuff seemed to lag with the crowd. But no complaints at our table of 12!

The Grain Store was our favourite pub in Newcastle, it pretty much became our local during our stay. It's close to the beach and has local craft beers and ciders on tap (Tilse's Apple Truck Cider from the nearby Hunter Valley is a good shout on a hot day - refreshing and crisp!). The brick building is decked out with wood and greenery inside and is a pleasant open space for chilling out over drinks. They also do a full bar menu. There's board games and an arcade table up at the back for some retro gaming action.

The breading was just a little bit dry for my tastes, but the chicken was tender & tasty, & the BBQ sauce was plenty to tide me over, but if I find myself back here I'll splurge for the gravy. The chips (fries) were ace. The salad was dressed with a light vinaigrette, a nice accompaniment to the fried food. My partner ordered a pizza: The Hendrix: salsa sauce base, seasoned beef, capsicum, & a mozzarella/cheddar blend & a dash of sour cream. ($14.90) Salsa base obviously makes for a bit of a strange pizza, but it was really good. Quite a large serving of sour cream, which is awesome if you like it; my partner, who doesn't, just pushed it off without any complaints. Their menu advertises mojitos, so I ordered one, but the bartender came & found me at my table a couple minutes later, apologizing profusely that they'd run out of mint. I asked for a schooner of beer instead, which she delivered with the change to make up the difference. Disappointing, but no big deal. Overall, good food for decent prices, especially when you throw in the free live music that accompanies your meal.

It's a pretty big place and every area is also different! Generally the food is good, well priced pub grub. The drink specials are usually good value and there's a good variety on offer. But this place attracts some freaking weirdos. It's close to the train station and is often the sloppy last stop for people before they go home. Dress casual (all looks are welcome here though) come with some friends and sit on the couches and people watch over some drinks. Perhaps on the night you read this it will be totally different to what I've described. But go without expectations and it will be a fun one.

(Judging from the biblical names they are related.) The restaurant interior is a bit dated, but the view is amazing. We enjoyed seeing quite a few para gliders soaring (and pulling acrobatic tricks) at reasonably close distance above the cliff, which was fun. We started with the "Seared Lamb Fillets with Peach and Mint Salad , Couscous and Labna $24", which was excellent. Very creative and tasty. For our meals we had: "Saltwater Barramundi with Caper, Tomato, Olive, Chilli Salsa and Chickpeas $37" and "King Prawns with a Mild Chilli Fettuccini Sautéed with Spanish Onion, Snow Peas, Brandy and Double Cream with Salmon Roe $42" Truth be told, we weren't blown away. The fettuccini in particular was not as it should be. For $42 you simply shouldn't have glued-together pasta strands; the sauce also wasn't anything special. The barramundi was nice and creatively paired with chili salsa and chickpeas. So, a bit of a mixed bag. Positive: Great view, great starter and barramundi Negative: Dated look, pasta faux-pas, pricey If we are again in this area one day, we would likely go check out a different place. Conclusion: 3 stars.

Set up in a faux-derelict manner (behind the bar is the only modern aspect to the place), it owes a lot to Melbourne's hipster-chic scene, from the boutique beer selection to the fantastic DJ sets and impromptu dance floor. The atmosphere is great, friends and completely without any of the confrontational attitudes that plague... well.. just a bout every other bar in Newcastle. Only minus is that the license is only til midnight. The host live gigs and other performances in the small venue upstairs and also have a rooftop beer garden (as I said: "Melbourne") which is now open from lunchtimes at the weekends throughout the Summer. Only open Thursday-Sunday, this is a fantastic addition to the city and hopefully it will thrive.

I'm not a fan of dark places which seems to be a trend with drinking venues. However, taking the stairs to the top completely changes the atmosphere. Not my type of place but I can appreciate what they are trying to achieve here.

Ramsey behind the bar was awesome and since I find most cocktails too strong he asked what I liked and made me something to match. It was fruity but most importantly sweet which I loved! Food certainly ranks higher than alcohol for me and Bar Petite has this well covered. We ordered arancini balls, sweet potato fries and spring rolls which I can't fault. They were all delicious.
