Nice hotel in the central part of downtown Sydney near lots of restaurants, bars, shops and not far from the metro station which is very convenient. Walking distance throughout the city from the hotel. Hotel itself is really nice, the lobby is large and accomodating and next to their restaurant. The hotel room was spacious and offered nice amenities, mini frig, safe, large bathroom with tub, large bed, nice screen TV. Workout room was large and had very machines and weights along with pool. The hotel also offered a laundry which was very nice also. Everything about this hotel worked for me and it was a good and positive experience here. The architecture of the building is exquisite. It's beautiful and nostalgic. I enjoyed reading about the history of the building and I definitely got the feeling of going back in time while I stayed here. Unfortunately, I stayed a while and the charm faded a bit over the days. The hotel was large, but it still had an intimate feeling. The concierge/bell hops were probably the best part of our stay. They were incredibly friendly, helpful and polite. One gentleman was always chipper, whistling and hustling which made me smile every time I saw him. He always remembered my name and greeted me warmly. Conversely, the front desk staff were cold, stiff, pre-occupied and inattentive. The room was on the smaller size, but had a nice view of the city. Through the concrete jungle, you could see where the harbour area was without actually seeing the harbour. It seemed as if the fixtures and bathroom could use some updating and redecorating. It seems like free wifi just isn't something common in Sydney, and this hotel was no exception. Limited wifi access is available at a fee. In the lobby area codes for a small increment of free wifi time are available but you practically have to hold a gun to the front desk staff to get one. I loved the location. Everything was really within walking distance. Darling Harbour, QVC, Chinatown, the Rocks and Circular Quay seemed like just a hop, skip and a jump. After being in the city for just a day or two, we quickly realized how small the city and easily navigable the city was. If we return to Sydney, most likely we will stay elsewhere. read more

One of the BEST hotels I've ever stayed at! I visited Sydney when I was 2 years old with my mum and older brother. It was my first international trip. For years, my mum would ask me in front of other people what the name of the hotel was in order to test my memory. All these years later, I still remember the Grace hotel and think about it quite often. It was an amazing place to stay and now that I'm older and see the prices, amazing value for your money too. I love this hotel as much as the Hilton or westin. Only not 5 stars because they don't have floor with free snack and drinks during the day. The historical architecture is very beautiful, but modern conveniences of outlets and wifi and my wifi was included had service in room and throughout hotel. (I almost didn't stay here because someone else reviews it wasn't available in the rooms) The hotel is in a great location. Can get here by bus, train (5 min walk after off) or cab from airport. Food for breakfast buffet was great. They even had sticky buns and noodles for Chinese New Year time. The rooms are clean, very large and the bathroom is so spacious I don't know what to do. I do wish they had more wall hooks or shelf to place items. The soaps they proved smell great. Not to flowery or manly. I would definitely stay here again. We stayed at The Grace during the Sydney portion of our Australian vacation. We reserved a family room which had a king bed and two singles. The room was spacious, but our location only had a small window in a recessed area looking into a courtyard. The bathroom was nice, but the shower door leaked (bad design). The room also had a nice safe and a small refrigerator. The refrigerator was mainly packed with items for sale but it was big enough to get add a few small personal items. There were no prices for the minibar in the room. The hotel has updated floors 8 & 9 and was in the process of updating floor 7 while we were there. We are the floor below so our room had not been remodeled but it was in good condition. We could hear some construction noise during the day, but it was minimal. The room was super quiet at night, with the exception of a late arriving screaming child next door one night. My kids enjoyed the heated pool, although it was small and couldn't accommodate many people. There is a small exercise room and sauna, but no spa. Although the room met our needs, there were three areas for improvement. The front desk was slow and lines mounted at times with no one jumping in to help. Also, there is no bar in the hotel. There is one next door, but you couldn't take a drink to go to your room. And finally the location is great for a business person but a further walk than we'd like from the circular quay area. I will say there is plenty of shopping, a choice of restaurants and even a small grocery store with light breakfast items close by. Most coffee bars were only open during weekdays. read more

I was happy to hear the history (former dept store) and would have easily given 5 stars... but I got in late on st Patrick's Day and area restaurants were nuts. I called room service (supposedly 24hrs/day) and was bluntly told they had no chef and tough crap. Hard pill to swallow when I saw TWO orders being delivered on my floor meet minutes before I called. So far so good! Nice clean room, good facilities. Beds are a bit hilarious, we booked a 2 bed room and while yes we do have 2 beds they are pushed together to make one big bed! Very funny but apparently not the norm, friends are in another room and there's are adequately spaced. Nice bathroom with Peter morrissey toiletries. You can purchase movies to watch with the click of a button - $15.95 a movie. Or watch the normal free to air channels and some foxtel channels. Very central location, a short walk to many good restaurants, cafés, transport etc etc. Lovely hotel to look at, really cool Art Deco design. I'm not a great fan of this hotel - it only looks like a hotel when look at it from a little distance, its location - opposite an after-work bar and two streets away from all the shops - is handy for travellers but seems unremarkable when you know your way around town, and it is neither pretty nor majestic nor does it look contemporary. But the hotel's restaurant/café isn't, thankfully, really so bad. For one thing, anyone (who has money on them) is allowed in. Not only are you allowed in, but they also make it look like you're allowed in. You don't have to weave through various and identical corridors or show ID - you just open the door (either from Clarence, King, or York St) and walk in. So simple you'd be inclined to think that Steve Jobs had something to do with it. You can also come in for breakfast, lunch or dinner and just order coffee. Hell, you can even order takeaway coffee. $2.50 for a take-away skim cappuccino. You can get two for $5. Or two with one of them with an extra shot of coffee for $5.50. Pretty rad. Or you can sit down if you want. I would save breakfast for a special occasion (like a Saturday or Sunday, that's enough of a special occasion these days) unless $18 breakfasts (with the lot) are your thing, but otherwise stick with the coffee. It's good and you'll thank me for it. And it's $2.50. At the hotel that doesn't look like a hotel. read more

Nicely priced hotel with a lot of amenities. And it's location was very to easy to walk around downtown. They have "free wifi," but that's for the first 500mb only. After that you have to pay. Good breakfast buffet. Gym and indoor facilities was modern and clean. Loved it. And there's a pub by the lobby. As for the room itself, awesome, nice plush and soft pillows and bedding. TV controls were a bit hard to navigate at first, but you get used to it. And the bathroom was super clean with fresh towels. read more

Where should I start....this place...omg laughable! We wandered past Mecca to have a coffee as it had indoor seating and we wanted to be able to hear each other. What a mistake.....we ordered 3 coffees and water for the table. The waitress noted everything down on her pad of paper. 30 minutes later....no coffee or water...I was seriously peeved. I went up to the cash register and it was being manned by a guy who was sorting out another's person bill so I went to the coffee machine where it was being cleaned by the barista. When I asked her where my order was, she had no idea because nothing had come through her register. The waitress who took our orders FORGOT to put them through to her. The barista apologised, said she didn't have anything come through to her and took my order. I was looking around the place for the waitress that took the order but she was no where to be found. After I returned to my table, the original waitress popped up, smiled apologetically and actually said "I forgot to put your orders through". Boy I was mad...but kept my cool, didn't actually say anything although I was shooting daggers at her. Never again!!! Go elsewhere!! read more

The promotion photos for the Grace highlight it's art deco qualities which definitely appeal to the romantic hoping for an Australian version of the Algonquin Hotel. Unfortunately, once you get past the fascia of the lobby, the rest of the hotel is pure business, clean and adequate but not glamourous. You won't be having Manhattans and martinis in a diamond shaped bar. That said, the service in the hotel is well appreciated. A lot of flights from the States come in at around nine a.m. Sydney time which can make checking into a hotel difficult. The Grace was kind enough to let us into our room in the morning well before the established check-in time. We needed extra pillows for our extra person and the housekeeping staff responded quickly, folding towels into intricate oragami before our eyes! You'll also appreciate the location which is near CBC shopping: the Victoria Shopping Complex. The Grace is close enough to Darling Harbor to enjoy the restaurants but you don't have to live there. Similarly, the walk to the Rocks is about twenty minutes. I appreciated having a coin laundry on site. You can expect to spend 10 dollars per load. This is where you end up meeting fellow guests! Let's just say Barmy's Army knows about the Grace. Wi-fi is sketch around the Grace. My sister's tablet worked but my iphone couldn't pick up anything. On the ground level, the Grace sits adjacent to an Italian-style cafeteria joint which is great for families who can't decide between pizza, pasta, or salads. Good place to refuel. read more

On a recent work trip to Sydney, I was fortunate enough to stay in the Art Deco haven of The Grace Hotel on York Street. It was fabulous. Especially if you're like me and have an Art Deco fetish and spend a lot of time admiring the sleek pre-war lines of this type of architecture. But I digress. The best thing about The Grace Hotel is that you're in the middle of Sydney CBD - smack bam in the middle of Wynyard and Town Hall stations and within walking distance of every place you could possibly want to go. My boyfriend and I will definitely be returning to the Grace. It's location is great, rooms nice and are clean, staff are all lovely. We were very surprised with the high quality in comparison with the price. The place is spotless and doesn't smell of over floral cleaning products, even the carpets in the hallways smell clean We stayed in a room on the seventh floor, there weren't any issues with noise as other reviews suggest. We loved the huge shower recess which seemed as though it had been placed where a bath had been before renovation. I just don't see the point in putting 'spas' and 'baths' in hotel rooms when you can barely fit in them. My one issue was that the pillows were almost as high as my shoulders. The first nights sleep was terrible as I had to sleep on the mattress and my arm. The second night I slept better as I'd asked the concierge if an older (lower) or softer pillow was available and house keeping brought one straight up. It was a little odd that the bed was only made up with a base sheet and duvet. We left a note for house keeping requesting a second sheet when the room was serviced and so this was an improvement, however they did only leave it folded up instead of making the bed properly. I was very impressed with the breakfast buffet. I require a gluten free diet and it was the first time that I've seen a separate station with a couple of different gluten free cereals, bread and separate toasters than those for the other bread. The only thing that would have made it better is a gluten free muffin as the 'normal people' had an array of pastries, cakes and muffins to choose from. It is really easy walking distance to pretty much everywhere, 5mins to Darling Harbour and very close to Westfield and QVB. Great that there are a few restaurants and a pub on the ground floor, saved us having to venture too far for dinner after a long tiring day. We didn't use the day spa but the 'recreation centre' on the top floor was great. It had a spa, shallow lap pool, sauna and steam room as well as some gym equipment. Few people seemed to use it even though it's accessible for all guests so we had the spa and sauna to ourselves. Lucky we had the assistance of the maintenance man as we weren't the best at following the instructions to turn everything on. There's a nice view from the spa as well. Really great hotel. Stayed here for 5 nights on a business trip, and though it's got that Empire State - like old charm to it, contrary to the Empire State Building, the internal furnishings are modern and well-apportioned. Great price for the quality of the hotel, and it is so well-placed - 3 minutes walking from Darling Harbour, 15 minutes walking from The Rocks, and 20 minutes walking to the Opera House. Customer service was impeccable. They made sure continually that I was all set, but were not over-bearing. When they sent me to the wrong room on check-in, they apologised, upgraded my room to a junior suite, and sent up a bottle of wine. Very professional, very worthy of five stars. Additionally, the concierge was really wonderful. The desk is always staffed with one or two people who are very knowledgeable and helpful, and will stop what they're doing and help you at any time. In-room dining was also quite good. Laundry services are too expensive, but if that's the only problem we're dealing with, no problem. read more

So happy to return to this beautiful building after a long day out exploring the rest of NSW. Our room is surprisingly quiet, seeing as The Grace is situated perfectly in the heart of the Central Business District, but our room is blissfully quiet since it faces a courtyard within the walls. Check-in was a breeze and the concierges never cease to be pleasant and helpful. Even room service and housekeeping are on point! We ask them not to tidy up the room, but will request extra toilet paper and coffee/tea bags at the end of the day. Someone will always promptly deliver what we need. One day, we also bought ice cream, but realized the freezer wouldn't work for our liter of mango-froyo, so room service kindly offered to keep the container frozen for us. Delightful service and we will definitely stay here again next time. Fabulous service and fabulous location! read more

Very convenient location. Right in the middle of downtown which means you can get most places with a few minutes walk. Staff is very friendly and I especially loved the concierge and porter staff! Rooms were clean and comfortable. Absolutely wonderful water temperatures and pressure...very important factor. One downside was the expense of Wifi. $15 AUD/day is a bit pricey especially when you consider that most of the establishments around town offer it for free. Overall a great stay. read more

As mentioned on multiple reviews the location is ideal. we bought groceries at the nearby Woolworths. we took the items out of the mini fridge and stored our things there, which the receptionist told us it was fine to do. I was able to warm up food at the restaurant on the 2nd floor as there were no other microwaves available. darling harbor is just a 5 minute walk (if you are a brisk walker). for the places farther away we used uber. there is a laundromat on the 3rd floor: $8 washer, $8 dryer, $3 detergent. the washer & dryer only accept $2 coins, which you can get from the receptionist. the gym is very underwhelming; only 2 treadmills, 2 stairclimbers, and a few free weights. for a hotel this size, you would expect more equipment. other than the sad gym and microwave shortage, it was a nice clean hotel with an attentive staff, with an awesome location, so I would definitely stay here again. read more

Real old world charm and class. Even the ornate and massive staircase between floors is a throw back to another era of luxury and elegance. My room was updated very nicely. The Irish pub is a great watering hole. There are several hotels to choose from in the general area. The Grace tops them all in my book. Stayed here for 3 nights while in Sydney for a visit. The hotel was beautiful and very nicely updated and renovated. The style is more contemporary traditional than slick and mod, so don't come here if you're looking for danish design. We had a king room that had fabulously high ceilings and large windows which let a lot of light in. The room wasn't giant, but definitely spacious, especially for being right in downtown Sydney. We did a lot of walking and this hotel was conveniently located to shopping, buses, ferries, etc. A very comfortable home away from home! My only complaint was that the wifi wasn't free, but that might not be as standard in Australia. Definitely recommended! read more

I was not impressed with the shower. The water pressure could have been better and there should be a handrail in the shower. I ate in their Vivaldi restaurant last week as had purchased a Scoopon voucher for pizza and wine here. We both got the pepperoni pizza and must admin it was pretty good. The meat they used was great. The house wine (we had no choice) was a bit of a slap in the face though :) What lets the place down more than anything though was the rude waiter, he was just very uninterested and unfriendly. The atmosphere was a little dead, I'm sure a big part of this reason was the unfortunate wait staff. An interesting decor, it could be beautiful as it is in an old building with really high ceilings and nice glass work but it seemed like tables and chairs were quickly thrown in just to get the place open. I would go back because the food was good but I would keep to it an easy after work eat place rather than somewhere I would go on a date night to read more

This was our first visit to Australia and I booked this Hotel sight unseen. When we arrived, we were quite tired having been on an 11 day Australian cruise. Upon entering the lobby, there was such a feeling of tranquility. Our room was quite spacious, cool, and yes, tranquil. The Hotel is very centrally located in the middle of downtown Sydney. Walking was not a problem for shopping or catching the sightseeing busses. We were also able to walk to the Royal Botanic Gardens for Sydney's spectacular New Year's Eve Celebration in the Harbor. The management tries very had to please their guests, and we especially recommend the Concierge Daniel. He is very helpful! read more
