I love coming to this warm, cheerful office and getting adjustments with Dr. Sue. I've seen big improvements in my lower back pain. My weekly visits are a top priority. When I have to miss a week due to travel or whatnot, I do not feel as good overall and am much more likely to feel back stiffness. I came here because of the reviews. I am writing because it is important that people are rightfully informed. I am glad for those who have had such great experiences but I can not say the same for myself. The first appointment you get x-rays done= 75$. There was zero protection provided during the x-ray scan, just a copper heart plate and Velcro. Bathroom toilet had feces all over the inside, clearly not attended to by the office manager who I didn't find to be pleasant. The office is extremely outdated, but once again, I gave it a shot due to peoples "amazing" reviews. Second time visiting, there were multiple people in the same room getting, "adjusted". Zero privacy. When finally getting seen by Dr. Mullen, it was clear she was doing the same spiel to lure patients in. Repeating the ailments I let her know about in the prior visit, lecturing me about medical terminology when after 10 minutes of her going on and on, would ask me if I remembered certain words. It was excessive and drawn out. I didn't come to get lectured for 15 minutes... I came to get help and healed. Then of course after the lecture, she brought up finances. Overall, it felt like a sales pitch. When I finally got on the table, some other woman who had just been worked on hollered at Dr. Mullen to continue working on her rather than begin my adjustment. It was super uncomfortable and unprofessional. No exaggeration, I was on the table for less than 5 minutes. When I asked, "Wait.. That is it"? She responded defensively and adjusted my neck more. Really? I left with an even bigger kink in my neck, extremely disappointed and felt played to say the least. Again, kudos to folks who have such amazing experiences, but I think its only right for all to know the other side of this practice. read more

One of the worst experiences i've had. Sue loves to insult your intelligence, she had me pronounce words and talked down on me, did a corny car salesman pitch where she wrote down two numbers and had me circle the better price. I told her I couldn't afford a 10 pack session for 3K as im a college student and she was relentless in telling me that I NEED to see her twice a week if I ever want to get better. First, they have an xray for when it is needed. Dr. Mullen's adjustments are gentle but very effective. She knows how to assess joints along arms and legs too in order to restore full function. It can take a bit getting used to being adjusted alongside two other patients. That said, she is efficient and there is never more than a minute or two wait. Do not come here unless you want to be subjected to a rushed exam and impatiently told that all of your answers must be "yes or no." Life and pain do not work that simply. Dr. Mullen adjusted my foot very quickly and did it well. That being the case, I regret the need for a sub-par review, but.... The office manager quoted 65.00 as the regular cost-per-treatment. She also said that my co-pay under MediCare would be 7.00 - 9.00. After the treatment, she demanded 75.00. After the treatment, Dr. Mullen made Medicare sound cumbersome and undesirable. Moreover, since she had already adjusted the foot, X-ray evidence of a subluxation (necessary to bill Medicare) was no longer possible to obtain. A sneaky way to slant the table toward paying the full price. The 'new patient' price listed on the web site includes a full body exam, with X-ray, neurological test, health counseling, etc. I was on the table for 12 minutes for a localized issue, so the 'special' was clearly not what I should have been charged for. On the door it says they practice love, but the love stops at the credit card machine. Be sure about the cost and hold them to it. read more

Go at your own risk!!! I have been meaning to write this review for a couple of years...but now that i have been suffering what i truly believe to be the consequences of trusting Sue to treat me i think i am now compelled to share my experience. I visited this place and on my first visit Sue took multiple x-rays and as a healthcare worker myself i don't believe i had enough x-Ray protection for the amount of pictures she took. Then afterwards she took me into her office to give me a rundown and explanation of costs and the treatment that she believed i needed which was in the thousands of dollars. Something about it felt inauthentic and almost a "used car salesman" approach. I told her i would "think about it" but proceeded to allow her to adjust me this first session. She did not warn me that she would crack my neck and i wasn't anticipating it so i was in a relaxed state when she did it and was fine afterwards. My second visit to her i asked her if she was planning on cracking my neck again and she said, "yes". I told her i was uncomfortable with it because i don't really want anyone doing that and to please not do it again. She made me believe that she was going to use a different tool and not do it. When it came time, she told me she had to and i cringed and she basically did it anyways...WTF??!!! It happened so quick and i she didn't even give me a second to respond. She basically had my neck in her hands, i quickly cringed and before i can get up and say no she just went ahead and cracked my neck. What kind of practitioner of any type does what they want with complete disregard for what the patient wants???? I had pain in my neck for any entire week and couldn't turn my neck for a solid 3 days. I spoke with a neurologist that i work with who explained to me what happened. I believe she may have caused trauma and gave me whiplash. I was going to take this up with a lawyer because it truly was that bad and i had soo much pain, but i let too much time pass and honestly felt like i probably signed my rights away to "lawyer up" when i signed their treatment consent. Now a few years later, i am still suffering what i believe is a consequence of her manipulating my neck in that manner. I have more neck pain that has gotten worse since that appointment with her and now affects my daily life. I am going to have an MRI next week. read more

I have damage to my right ankle from being run over by an SUV. The bones are displaced, and I thought a chiropractor could help. I picked Good LIfe because I wanted an x-ray for internal visualization of their current location, as indicated in the new customer special advertised on the web site. But I was told by Sue that their x-ray machine is not capable of imaging my ankle. Since I was there for the consultation I let her do an adjustment, which afterward seemed to help a little. I was somewhat troubled by the fact that she told me to take a particular supplement, LIgaplex, but she couldn't explain how it is supposed to work or whether there is any objective research to support its use. (After I left I looked for peer-reviewed publications showing benefits from taking LIgaplex, but found none.) The second and third adjustments became progressively more perfunctory, with no benefit, so I stopped going. read more

While listening to this "doctor's" diversionary advice that my problems with severe leg and back pain were caused by scoliosis (common in men my age), I came close to death from cancer. The real source of my pain and numbness? I had a malignant mass in my cecum that was pressing on everything around it and causing pain. It was massive enough that it should have been obvious to anyone with medical training and I should have immediately been referred to a medical professional. Chiropractic has nothing for the cause of my pain. Instead, Sue Mullen exploited my need for relief by selling me on chiropractic treatments and laser therapy. Before accepting treatment, I warned her (and she had X-rays to corroborate) that I have damaged vertebrae in my neck from a 50 year old injury. I asked that she not try to adjust those because it would only cause me pain. She only made my problem worse with her insistence on "adjusting" my damaged and fused cervical vertebrae anyway, totally ignoring both my requests and the medical evidence. It was not until I left her treatment that I was able to heal. I can only assume from my experience with medical professionals, that Dr. Sue Mullen, despite her Dr. title, is not. Although congenial and courteous, I would not trust my medical well-being to this person. If you are otherwise healthy and you like what chiropractic does for you, then go for it. But do not substitute good medical practice with these amateurs. In my experience, neither she nor any chiropractor is qualified to diagnose medical issues. Get a professional opinion or two before resorting to this. As for me, I am getting ready for chemo. They tell me that, had I not delayed, I possibly could have been cured by a small surgery instead of losing 1/3 of my colon and requiring chemo. While I'll never know this for sure, and Sue Mullen's office is in no way responsible for the onset of cancer in my body, I will always regret the time and money I wasted at this office. read more

I was dizzy for two full years because of my neck. I would have panic attacks, stuffy nose, headaches, and could not sleep nor work well--sometimes not at all. I had been to physical therapy, four doctors, and the emergency room too many times to count. I went through all this because no one told me that a chiropractor might be able to help. I feel robbed of two years of my life because I merely had to spend a few moments getting xrays and twenty minutes being adjusted by Dr. Mullen. On all that is sacred in this universe, I got one adjustment and half my dizziness went away. I've been seeing Dr. Sue for a year and this is the first time in 19 years that I have been pain free!! I have jokingly named her "The Back Whisperer" because not only did she diagnose my issue, she has corrected it. I dropped my review down to one star due to price gouging! If I schedule an appointment more than 4 weeks out she charges an extra $65 for an exam that literally takes 2 minutes and when I asked about it she stated that it is mandatory to charge that amount and that it's the law. I started seeing a new chiropractor as a result who has never heard about this "law", therefore I haven't been back since. She listened intently to everything I had to say regarding shoulder issues and made sure we were both very clear on my goals. I was so desperate and didn't believe anyone would be able to help me. After only 2 adjustments my shoulder girdle feels different than it has ever felt in my life. I suggest that those who are easily influenced and don't have much cash to spare find a different provider. Dr. Sue is undoubtedly skilled at her work. However, she is pushy and as several other reviewers here have mentioned, she continually hounds patients for unneeded or marked-up services that cost a fortune, even students like myself whose families are working hard just to make ends meet. Example #1: She sells a special neck traction pillow which she prices at $40. It is quite literally a block of styrofoam with a Lycra covering. She kept pushing me to buy it every time I saw her until I gave in and bought it, but only after negotiating for a $10 student discount. I found the same model on Amazon for $20. Too bad I only did that afterwards. Example #2: I once commented out of concern that she sounded ill when she was adjusting me. My friendliness was rewarded by her launching into a spiel about how she takes this special supplement for allergies and asked if I wanted to buy some... Um no thanks, I don't even have allergies! Example #3: She tried to get me to give her a stool sample so she could run a test (~$300) to further investigate my chronic migraines. I asked my neurologist about this test who confirmed my suspicions: she had never done a stool sample test with any of her patients and had never heard of such a test. This was the last straw and I am currently taking an indefinite break from seeing her. It's a shame that she won't give her sales pitches a rest because she really is a great chiropractor. I got to this point because I felt like was dealing with an overeager door-to-door salesman for every adjustment. read more

Two months after my last visit with doctor Mullen, I finally decide to gather my thoughts and to write a review based on my experience. I also feel a great sense of responsibility to inform others about it, especially to those who are in a journey of healing and for that matter, of transforming pain and anguish. I went to the "Good life chiropractic" because there was a sale in the new year. Doctor Mullen offered cheaper X-RAYS. I was experiencing hip pain and as a dancer who works with her hips constantly, I was concerned. X-rays were done on Friday and I was to come back on Monday for a diagnosis. On that day, Dr. Mullen told me that there was good news and bad news. The bad news was that I had 10 sublaxations in my body and that I was pre-arthritic. The good news was that I could do something about it if I get adjusted for the rest of my life. I was devastated. I am 28 years old and am already having problems! I didn't know what to think. Dr. Mullen quickly proceeded with a monthly plan. I was to pay about $3000 for 3-4 months of adjustments (2-3 times a week). I told her that I am a teacher and that I can't conceive paying more than $500 a month for this healing work. She then asked me to ask my grandmother and family members. I was taken aback but that is exactly what I did. About 7 members of my family put down money for this, as this seemed major. However, I needed a second opinion. I went to see my Boss' chiropractor in North Berkeley who had been adjusting her and her daughter ever since she was 3 years old, as well as the rest of her family for a long time. After seeing the X-rays that Dr. Mullen had taken, he told me that my neck was a little to forward but that other than that, I had almost a perfect spine. I had a leg shorter than the other and my left hip ball/socket needs work, hence the hip pain. He also told me that in that particular month, I was his third patient coming to him from the "Good life" chiropractic. I was relieved. Not too mention that my monthly plan was way more affordable, about less than half of what Dr. Mullen charges. After seeing my new chiropractor, my pain had diminished so much that I don't even think about it. If I would've chosen to stick with Dr. Mullen, the fear and anguish of thinking that I am pre-arthritic, and the stress of scrounging for the adjustments' costs, it would've taken my pain and healing towards a downward slope. I was in a car accident a little over a year ago. When I had my first appointment at Good Life Chiropractic, I was unaware of how much that car accident had affected my body. But after a year, I noticed I just could not turn my neck like I used to but my body hurt when I lifted things and I was having funny symptoms like blurred vision.... and these seemed to be nearly constant symptoms - they were not healing like other types of injuries do. When I went for my initial appointment with Dr. Sue, I became much more aware of how significantly my body has seized up, how much range of motion I had lost, and how much pain I had simply acclimated to. She help me to actually see how stiff my body was by educating me alongside her initial examination and showing me clearly what she was seeing including helping me become aware of how much my daily activities had been impacted. Within minutes of my first visit to Community Chiropractic I knew that I was in good hands. Doc Sue has such a wonderful approach and disposition that is made clear by how joyful her clients are when they arrive for an adjustment. Traditional chiropractic had always been something I personally feared due to my body's innate protection of several injuries that I had experienced by way of vehicular accidents, repetitive stress and the deep nauseating feeling of somebody torquing my body forcefully.
