Imitation scallops are typically made by mincing and mixing inexpensive white fish (like pollock and whiting) together. Sometimes, these fakes are even made of shark meat or stingray. This mixture results in a thick paste that can be molded into the desired shape. For scallops, the paste is pressed into a cylinder, then sliced into perfect rounds -- and this is one of the giveaways that they're not true scallops. Real scallops, on the other hand, don't look identical to one another and are never perfectly round. While they do have a somewhat circular shape, they are often uneven and lopsided. Each scallop will slightly vary in size, as they come from different sizes of bivalves. Texture will also come into play. Circular slices of surimi paste are solid and somewhat rubbery, similar to what you encounter with crab sticks or the fish cakes seen in ramen or udon soups. The texture of actual scallops is softer and more pliable.

The gumbo is fantastic and honestly some of the most authentic I've had here in Columbus. It's packed with flavor and really stands out. Their shrimp and crab with the garlic butter sauce at a medium heat level is absolutely incredible. The seasoning and spice are perfect, and paired with their cornbread... OMG It's SO good! The service was great, and the ambiance was really nice too. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. The building is very modern and clean from the outside, white and angular with big windows. Inside white walls, rough hewn wooden tables and just the right amount of decor makes for a modern seaside feel, casual but also classy. The setup is fast casual, you order and pay up front at the counter, get a number for your table and then get your own drink at the service station. The menu is understandably very heavy on fish and seafood with a couple of other items. While there are the expected fried fish meals, but also oysters, shrimp and salmon, salads and even some tacos. The reason I came was of course for the fried fish, I decided on the Perch and Chips, which is $18. I grabbed some water, hot sauce and lemon and settled onto a table. The meal was brought out fresh and hot by a food runner in a couple of minutes. The meal was 4 nice sized perch fillets on top of a generous portion of fresh waffle fried potatoes with a side of tarter sauce. The fish were excellent, fresh and perfectly fried with a nice crispy cornmeal crust around the delicately fish; moist with a slight sweetness and perfect texture. The waffle fries were exceptional, fried to a crisp outside and tasty inside; usually fries at a seafood place are an afterthought, here they actually are well worth getting and eating. Even the tarter sauce was very nice, nothing special but creamy with a nice pickle contrast to add a little extra flavor. Usually when I see a place that has been around this long and has great reviews I am a bit let down when I give them a try; Jolly Rogers Seafood House exceeded my expectations in almost every way. Although set up as a fast casual restaurant with a typical fried seafood menu, the actual restaurant feels more upscale and modern with a great inside and a very nice patio looking out onto Lake Erie. The food is not cutting edge, but it is expertly prepared and delicious. Prices are moderate with large portions for your money. Some of the best fried perch and waffle fries I have had. I will be back any time I am in the area, a very high recommendation as long as you are looking for fish or seafood, go and enjoy.
