The art school is connected with the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) organization and campus. The building is absolutely beautiful and the classrooms are well equipped for blooming artists striving to become.better at their craft. The current program our daughter is participating in is an "Art Tales" program. A story is read to the students and then they create art afterward that is inspired by the story. Various media are explored and used; drawing, painting, clay sculpting, etc. The class is 2 hours in duration, once weekly, and takes place for a period of 3 months. It's a great program and a sure fire way to enhance cultural enrichment and serve as an expressive and creative outlet. The campus is directly adjacent to the MFAH, so parents can enjoy a day at the museum while children are in class if they feel (membership or admission required) or, simply browse the student art on display in the galleries of The Glassell School of Art (this is free) and there is plenty to see. There is also a sculpture garden on campus to stroll through (for free) and a rooftop deck that makes for some lovely views and photo opportunities. Free street/curbside parking is usually available, otherwise there is a fee-based parking structure.

The instructors are very nice and helpful. You get an intro and two hours to complete & glaze your piece. They fire your pieces for you, and I've never been disappointed with the outcome. They've recently started doing handbuilding 6-week series that I wish I could be apart of, but unfortunately as of now it's on Sundays in the middle of the day, and I frequently work weekends during that time. If they offered a weekday handbuilding series, I would be all over that like white on rice.

Carole demo'ed the whole thing, and was ready to assist at any time. She also had a bunch of materials where we could go hog-wild on the clay craft. She was prompt with correspondence on when to pick up, etc. And the space itself and bathroom is clean and not hard to find-- a touch eclectic and still clean and efficient, very much like Carole! My older daughter started reading at 3.5 years old and it was all because of the school - but this is not done through tons of worksheets. The school truly fosters a love of learning. Everything that is implemented in the school is done so with intention and care for the children. My girls LOVE to go to school and they cry if they can't go! They are happy, they are learning, and they are thriving. I cannot express how much gratitude I have for Ms. Nadine and how much she loves the children.

Based on all the data for how important this is for kids, this doesn't seem like a challenging request -- but Blossom Heights was one of the only places I found where kids spend more than 2 hours outside (and most places it's more like 30-45 minutes). They have full and part-time programs, too, which is a major plus. It is not near where I live, but 100% worth the drive. The emphasis on open-ended play and being in nature is perfect. Each classroom has a dedicated outdoor area curated to their age/development. My son is outside for hours every day--painting, reading, playing with leaves, learning about bugs--it makes my day when I get pictures in the communication app of all the cute things he's doing. I'm so grateful he isn't stuck at a desk baking under fluorescent lights, or in a room with a million beeping toys. The classrooms are warm and cozy, full of open-ended activities but not overwhelming. The teachers and administrators are all so kind and loving. His teachers have been so patient with his reluctance to nap, and they give us the cutest insight into his days and growth. "Open-ended" and "play-based" is not a code word for laziness here, the teachers are extremely involved in crafting an environment that the children can learn from and guiding/nurturing them. They've been very careful with Covid precautions, too, and I never feel I'm taking unnecessary risk by bringing him to school. My only complaint is that I can't go to school here!

It was very easy to make a reservation with Hawaii Fluid Art by calling/texting the phone number on…read morethe website. We made a reservation for five people, but two canceled the night before and only three total showed up. Hawaii Fluid Art welcomed the three of us without any pushback for the two that didn't show up. I appreciated the great customer service and flexibility/understanding. The colors, energy, and vibe inside of the studio is amazing! You walk in and you just feel so elevated! There were various different shapes and sizes of charcuterie boards to select from which was fun! I wasn't expecting there to be a butterfly and I totally chose it! Victor was EXTREMELY patient with us as we selected our colors and art style. He made recommendations based on which pieces of the hanging art we liked to assist us with the color selection process and made recommendations of what colors might work well together and which colors to select in matte versus metallic. The one thing that I didn't realize about the charcuterie board class, is that the only part you get to participate in as a customer, is the paint part. The store staff do all the resin on your behalf two days later, after the paint dries. We were interested in a resin class, so when we found this out, we were disappointed that we didn't get to use the resin ourselves. I think it would also be helpful to have a tutorial on how to pour the paint into the cup layer by layer to achieve the design that you want on your item. For example, I was going for more of a sunset vibe, so I probably could've poured more paint into my cup for each layer. And because my board surface area was a little bit smaller, I did not end up using all the paint in my cup. I originally poured the paint into my cup in layers in color order of a sunset but was instructed to pour the paint layers more randomly so the second half of my layers in the cup, we're not in sunset color order. So, because I didn't end up using all the paint, I got only the random colors on my board instead of the sunset colors at the beginning/in the bottom of the cup :( Overall, I love the idea of this class and the classroom setting and Victor! Communication and structure in the form of instructional guidance at the beginning of the class would be greatly beneficial to ensure that everybody understands what they're doing and leaves loving their design!
