Talking to the artist I just ran into. Preface: I don't know jack about art. I went to my first art opening 2 years ago at DiverseWorks as apart of my job. Then someone invited me to an Art League opening. I've missed very few shows - like 2 - since then. It's a step up from your friend's friend's 'gallery' that you really don't get - but it isn't someplace you're going to go and talk art theory and your favourite artists from the 18th century. Or event 21st century. It's local. It's fun. It's free.

I understand things cost money, but that was pretty steep, in my opinion, for an experience that lasted all of 15 minutes.

I started out in the beginner class with no previous experience and quickly learned the basics. The beginner class is a reasonable $170 for a 5 week session and you can count on coming home with 6+ pieces. Your final class will be a potluck, work reveal and Raku firing. John and Judy allowed me to take the beginner class for a few sessions until I was confident enough to move forward to the intermediate. I'm currently taking 3 month intermediate sessions with the option of extra studio time on Saturdays for $5. I love to come to class and unwind on Monday nights after a long day; playing with clay is really a form of therapy. The owners are there to assist you hands-on and help you achieve the best result (as are some of your classmates that have been students here for many years). John and Judy often have a different approach to their craft, which is beneficial in that you're exposed to more than one perspective and technique. The best advice that I can give is to eliminate your expectations. Almost every piece you make will look different than you envisioned, but you'll learn to love the unpredictability.

The instructors are very nice and helpful. You get an intro and two hours to complete & glaze your piece. They fire your pieces for you, and I've never been disappointed with the outcome. They've recently started doing handbuilding 6-week series that I wish I could be apart of, but unfortunately as of now it's on Sundays in the middle of the day, and I frequently work weekends during that time. If they offered a weekday handbuilding series, I would be all over that like white on rice.

My concentration, stillness and self confidence has improved multi folds. Apart from this I experience a pervading serenity & happiness all throughout my day. The presenters of this class do a great job at not only comparing different meditation technique but also teaching the very intricate and subtle tips to improve your meditation. The Glassell school offers all sorts of art classes for all ages, from jewelry-making to figure drawing and portfolio preparation. The school also brings art to the general public through its outreach programs - check the website for more info. This isn't the kind of place to visit necessarily, though you can tour the Core fellows' studios on occasion.
