The crew knows the areas where the whales feed, and when they see the spout or breach or any indication of whale activity, the boat can quickly go to them. On the beautiful sunny day following the Memorial Day weekend my partner and I and two guests had…read morethe pleasure of taking a two hour cruise on Captain Jon's classic Down East, a 25 foot fiberglass inboard boat with ample room for six.  The trip was fantastic! I have vacationed in Portsmouth on the bank of the Piscataqua River for twenty years but until my boat excursion with Captain Jon had never seen the historic sites, forts, prison, coast guard stations, retired rescue station, from the water view nor the beauty and elegance of Sagamore Creek off New Castle Island and the historic light houses. We were so close they felt alive. Jon told me that indeed they were alive, fully automated, and functional and still directing ships of all sizes and types from around the world safely into Portsmouth's exciting and scenic harbor. We also learned a bit of basic rules applying to navigational buoys. The boat was very comfortable and had seating under a sunscreen as well as a comfortable cabin and head.  The beauty of the shoreline was matched by the magnificence of the animals we saw up close; five lobsters, retrieved from two of his private lobster pots-four just a bit under size for keeping land one large one covered with caviar like eggs on its bottom. The five of them were returned to their home thirty feet below the boat to grow and propagate. Diving and dining cormorants and a majestic bald eagle flying close to the boat were the visual desert. The beauty of the sites was matched by the enlightening narrative that Jon provided, both of the shoreline's features, lobster biology, and maritime history and folklore.  My summary: Two hours of visual delight, learning, fun and a bit of Maine gossip.  My recommendation: Five stars-the highest possible.  Bob Levine

If there's ever been an asshole on the boat, o haven't encountered him or her and it's hard to miss someone when the boat is capped at 20 fishermen. My dad has been going out on the Bunny Clark since the 80s and me with him since age 12. When I was young we started with a 3 hour tour then increased over time. My dad used to do the marathon trips but now sticks with the extreme day and this has become an annual or semiannual trip for us together, maybe with a friend or two. The vessel is basic (exactly what is needed) but the people and experience are exceptional. Bring cash to tip the mate who will filet your fish for you plus extra if you want to buy flies, bait, and put into any of the pools they may have going. Parking nearby is $10 per car in Perkins Cove which you can't beat.

What great fun! We took the morning tour a few days ago and loved every part of it. We learned a…read morelot about lobsters, met some really nice people, got a terrific boat ride and came away delighted and maybe even a little better educated about the crustaceans. We highly recommend it. More specifically, we took the 75 minute trip with maybe 15 others on a small lobster boat. It was a breezy day and the boat did a fair amount of rockin' and rollin' to the point that one in our party got seasick. The crew quickly got her a pail, she threw up, and all was fine after that. Passengers are given wrist pressure bands on boarding which helps maybe. Our seasick partner confessed afterwards that she also loved the trip in spite of the brief problem. Watching lobsters hauled on board and learning about their habits was fascinating, and Lauren was a wonderful guide for us. We felt safe always, and just had a blast. The boat dock is located directly behind the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, and you'll have to walk through the resort grounds in the back to get to it. We got lost but only briefly. The trip was $49 per person, which we thought was a bargain considering the fun.
