Firstly, the map has got it wrong - this is rural Gloucestershire, Chipping Sodbury, not central Bristol. Mix up on location of Broad Street obviously.
Secondly, I'm gonna review 4 pubs/ bars in this one review, as I can't be bothered to create 3 new premises (I would if they were excellent, mind you)
As with all these places - assume they are all very busy, surprisingly so, for a small market town, it manages to fill every drinking hole - there were 7 in the town square area. You could throw a stone from any of the places we visited, and hit at least 4 others!
The first pub is the Squire Inn - the best place we went this evening, felt genuine, low ceilings, white wash abounds, used to be a coaching house apparently. Another interesting fact - we seemed to follow, or were followed by a fair number of people drinking here ie; they appeared at the other pubs we visited. Was this a case of musical pubs?! We moved on, the Royal Oak - this was busy, we located ourselves in a little courtyard, to breath. Met a couple of blokes here, they were interested in our group's mix of non-local people (a Scot, A Brummy, Me, a Londoner, plus 2 Welsh lads), spent a while having a good chat and laugh with them. We bumped into them again later on (no surprise there!) Apart from this moment, the pub was rather nondescript, felt a bit cheap really. Next, onto the ....can;t remember.... I've looked at google, other search engines, can;t find it. I think it was called the Patridge Hotel. This was a converted stables, or something similar. Felt very tacky inside - poor quality laminate flooring, quite a few people from the Squire Inn present, apparently late licence. We ended up outside in the stable area. One of those heat lamps worked, so we huddled around it. Spent some time chatting to locals, including blokes from the previous pub - all friendly, and in good spirits, so bonus point for that, didn't stay too long - too cold! Then onto the the final pub, and title of this review - The George. This felt like an old fashioned party pub/ hotel. There were obviously some changes - looking at pics on their website. The area we were stood is usually the Rendezvous Restaurant! They had stripped away the tables and chairs, the bar ran alongside this area, indoors. at the far end was a long room, which was the dance area. Usual provincial disco music playing to a relatively busy crowd. Some people were worse for wear, others on their way. Not a great place, but serves a function. Open til late, so that's why we were there! All in all, would recommend the Squire Inn, the rest were ok, the evening went well, we all enjoyed ourselves. PS only saw one bit of bother all night, which was pleasant. See more incidents down London town of a Saturday night. read more
