Visited this place for the first time on the 16/12/09…read more I was attending a Christmas lunch. The pub is pretty basic, a standard bar area, and lounge bar. There is a further bar area that services area designated as the restaurant. I don't know what the food is like generally, but it was basic homely cooked food. The vegetables were fressh, and the roast potatoes were roast potatoes, and not deep fried like you sometimes find. I selected: Starter: Chicken Liver Pate Main: Turkey, with sprouts, peas, carrots, plus pig in blanket, stuffing, roast potatoes, and boiled new potatoes, nice gravy, plus cranberry jam. Sweet: Christmas pudding and custard (seemed to be fresh). Followed by a warm mince pie, and coffee. All for £11.95. Bargain. The brewery is Everards (Old Leicester Brewery). The service was a bit slow at times, and confused, but just not enough staff, and they were very pleasant. I can certainly recommend for a bargain Christmas lunch. Just don't expect cordon blue frills.

The individual meals all arrived at different times, over half the meals were wrong, the pre ordered list had been lost by the pub, the whole place was freezing cold, no heating at all. When we complained about the heating the manager said you'll just have to keep your coats on we can't afford the heating costs, so we did! A very poor evening, we couldn't wait to leave. I recently gave them a second chance and took my friend in for a snack lunch after a long walk in the snow. We ordered a baguette each and sat down, our drinks came straight away but we had to wait 45 mins for any food to appear , I asked the barmaid several times if she could find our food, she eventually agreed and came back with our baguettes. she presented the baguette meal on very grimey chopping boards, and was pressing her thumb into one of the chips at the side of the board as she carried it over, god I've never seen anything like it, she put the food down and the chip had stuck to her thumb, she flicked it off and said" enjoy your meal" We couldnt enjoy our meal it was terrible, the place was freezing and our particular table was so rickety and cheap we had to be careful not to lean on it in case it broke. we ate some of our meal but were too horrified to stay any longer. It really was a scene from Basil fawlty !! I can't believe they can get away with service like this it's appalling ! I've written to the pub and to environmental health. dont go there

I found it to be a most unfriendly and hostile place. It seems to be frequented by mainly middle aged to elderly customers. No doubt they are regular's and no doubt they all know each other. So if you are a stranger you are looked upon as something of a curiosity, and with great suspicion. The staff are coldly polite. Some of the customers are actively rude, that's if they speak at all. I can't comment on the food. There was a waitress moving around the tables taking orders, but she chose to totally ignore me. I eventually felt so uncomfortable that I left without ordering any food and ate elsewhere. I felt unwelcome in this pub and I doubt I will ever go back there. One good point, no unruly kids running around, that's a massive plus. It gets one star for that. But if you fancy a steak on a Thursday night, there are many places nearby that will give you a warm welcome, but you won't get one here.

The staff were very polite and friendly as we're the customers and I even stayed for another pint with some of the regulars. The waitress couldn't be more helpful and the steak was beautiful. All in all I had a top notch experience and would definitely return in the future.
