We ordered salt and pepper squid, scotch egg, fish and chips and the ultimate burger with sweet potato fries. The food took quite a long time to come - probably as it was busy. There was also a whiff of dishwasher/cleaning fluid in the air as the kitchen directly opens up onto the seating area. When the food arrived I fell in love with the warm scotch egg, however, I wasn't very keen on the fish and chips. I felt like it lacked crucial flavour and crispness. The pricing isn't too bad for the heart of Highgate and I would probably go there again - I just wouldn't order the fish and chips.

Out of the many great pubs to choose from in Highgate The Angel Inn is one of my favourites so we headed over. It's a lovely, cosy place, with original 1930's wood paneling and gorgeous open fires mixed with trendy couches and tasseled lampshades hanging over the bar. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly, and during the day you will find anyone from 20-somethings to families with babies and dogs all enjoying a drink. The music is usually good too (think Mumford and Sons and old classics such as Portishead) creating a nice, chilled out ambience. Whilst in the evening, it becomes more bar-like and large groups reserve tables for various celebrations. For me though, the food is the main attraction, and if you like pub food you will not be disappointed. Everything here is served up in hearty and delicious portions, from "Cumberland Sausages and Mash" to "Pork Belly, Sauteed Leeks and Bacon Mash", it's all scrumptious and served promptly with a smile. What can I say, it appeals to both the Yorkshire and Greek in me. The bar men are very friendly and polite too so if you add them to the amazing food, great drinks (this is one of the only places I can find bottled raspberry beer) and a great venue, it certainly deserves the title of a fantastic local. Top Tip: The Sunday Roast is to die for.

In that area, you go up and order and they bring out your food. Easy. Supposedly. First, they were out of almost everything we tried to order. My husband and I ordered a starter for the table and it came out first. Then our companions got their food - and the two of us waited for our mains. And waited. And waited. Watching as so many people after us got their food. We checked in at the 45 minute mark. Still no food. Finally at the hour mark, we asked to speak to a manager as our friends were already done with their meal. A manager came over and told us that the wait was our fault because we had ordered a starter for the table, our mains would automatically come out 50 minutes later. It was "the system". No attempts to apologize that our food was so late or that our friends were done with their entire meal. No attempts to make things right or to comp us a drink (we had bought two bottles of wine at this point). The food finally came out and it was good (i had the roast chicken and my husband had fish and chips). We were so hangry that anything would have been good. No attempt to check back or apologize or any of it. I guess they got what they wanted as our friends ended up buying more drinks to sit with us. So in short: attractive place, decent food but lousy service. If you're in a group, don't be the nice ones to order the starter for the table. You'll be penalized.
