It happened again today and I was literally dumbfounded. I just stood with the person that needed help, even though I couldn't help them because I'm not an employee nor family member, only an acquaintance, and I said I'll stay with you until somebody helps you. I can't believe that they're still in business. DHEC needs to check this place out anonymously to really see what goes on in real time. There are some very caring employees, but there's a handful of CNA's that need to be terminated immediately.

The NHC staff have been the most loving, caring people I could ever hope for. The nurses and CNA's are attentive and work so hard to make each resident safe and comfortable. I've walked in twice here…read more First time it was for my son who had a rash.We went at about 6:30pm. It was right in the middle of flu season & they had mask out. I put the mask on to protect my two little ones. There were people in the lobby coughing w. unknown illnesses. Wait time was no more than 20 minutes. We got in to see the doctor & she was super nice, sent the prescription over to CVS electronically and referred us to a specialist. Second time was for myself. I spent about an hour & a half. There were several people ahead of me so I could understand. Once I got to the back I explained my symptoms & the doctor prescribed medicine & sent the prescription over to CVS electronically. The medicine worked without her doing an examiner or referring me somewhere else. We talked some more & I think she was only asking to diagnose me. If I ever need to go to a Urgent Care id choose them.

Our Mother is 95 and still recovering from COVID when the hospital suggested she go to rehab…read morefollowing discharge. We determined early on that we needed to stay with her each day for various reasons including very little attention or care from staff. Her Therapy lasted about 1/2 hour most days as she could not leave the room due to Covid restrictions. The PT and OT staff were good, but only one or the other came each day where we were told she would see both. So in a 24 hour period, she had only 30-45 minutes of Therapy. We were told a recliner would be provided to keep her feet elevated but that never materialized. Her feet began to swell for the first time in more than a year. Her room had two straight back chairs that were not especially comfortable and we brought a stool from home to try to elevate her feet. We did notice that most of the other patients were left in their beds. Upon arrival our Mother was very weak. She a history of dizziness when waking, but night staff expected her to go to the bathroom even after PT and nursing assured us she would have assistance. She had a bedside potty for only one night. An assistant came and watched her go to the bathroom then disappeared while she was using the commode. Staff only came to her room when called for assistance, to bring medicine, or food. Some staff were caring and helpful, but they were in the minority. She was not bathed by staff, small or medium pull ups were not available (we had to go get some for her), and her room was not cleaned during her two week stay. Her trash cans were emptied most days. We were told (by an RN) that we could not use the common are due to HIPPA. I am aware of HIPPA rules and know it is THEIR responsibility not to discuss patients in hearing of other people. However, we were stuck in the small room all day unless going outside the building to walk. The day before discharge a different RN told us there was no such rule and we were welcome to use the common area. Due to difficulty in communication, we spent one morning going 'up the ladder' until we finally got someone to respond to us and discuss her care and potential discharge. (This was after leaving messages for three days asking for a call back.) We would not elect to go back to the Cottages for post-acute care.

I visited here when my brother-in-law was at Patewood Rehab (PR) after hospitalization…read more The facility is in an easily accessible location, off Congaree Road. On our first visit, we parked in the front parking lot, and had to walk around to the entry. On subsequent visits, we parked in the second parking lot, which brings you closer to the entrance. PR facilities appear to be very clean, and fairly well run. On our visit, they were still requiring masks. I had been given both the wrong name and wrong address by a family member, so I called PR to find out if the brother-in-law was here. The lady at the front desk was helpful and friendly. As with any facility of this type, a family member must be actively engaged. There was an ongoing problem with getting a water pitcher for the BIL's use, and no real explanation as to why they got one for the roommate, but not him. These small things will try your patience. We stayed with the BIL to give his wife a break, and noticed that he enjoyed his supper. I think the food is decent, though it may be too high carb for the health-conscious. Any time we needed help with transferring the BIL from his bed to a wheelchair, or vice versa, they responded in a timely and efficient manner. If you are looking to place a family member at PR, or any facility, plan to spend a lot of time there, to ensure the best service for your loved one.

I went up to check which hospital they had moved him to. I asked a lady at the nurses station and she said I had to ask the nurse, and she pointed her out to me. I walked down to her medicine cart and asked her did she know which hospital they had transferred my uncle to. She said she didn't know, I asked her if patewood kept records? She slammed the drawer on the cart and stormed off down the hall, I stood there wondering what had just happened. I walked down to the nurses station where she was sitting not trying to answer my questions. Another lady was a looking on the computer and told me politely ,St Francis Downtown. after going to check on my uncle at the ER I returned to get his things left behind, I knew he would not come back to this place! The nurse supervisor came out and I told her he would not be returning and I needed to pick up his things from the room. I told her the nurse I tried to get information from surely DIDN'T LIKE HER JOB, and she should consider walking across the street and get a job selling cars, but with her attitude she would probably go hungry.

Slight concern regarding safety and how an injury was handled at this facility…read more I witnessed an interaction between Brushy Creek staff and a nursing student who was at the facility for clinicals. While walking down the sidewalk near one of the cottages, the student slipped and fell due to mud and standing water on the sidewalk. She landed directly on her hip and continued to experience pain for the remainder of her clinical shift. When she brought her concern to the HR office, she was told that she "shouldn't step in a puddle." There did not appear to be an effort to document the incident or provide her with information about an incident-report process. My concern is not only for the student, but for the residents as well. A slippery, muddy sidewalk presents a serious fall risk, especially for elderly residents who could potentially suffer a serious injury from a fall. I encouraged the student to seek medical attention and document what happened. I was honestly surprised that there did not seem to be more concern or compassion shown toward someone who was injured while simply walking on the facility's property for a clinical rotation. At the very least, I would hope a healthcare facility would take a fall seriously, ensure the area is safe, and have a clear process for documenting injuries.
